As I understand it, this is meant to be a different group than our regular Mane Six group. So... maybe this is in the future, when the Equestria setting has spread?

Darn first level adventures, you spend all that time making back-story for your hero and how awesome he is, and next thing you know your slaying rats in some old codgers basement, Or your traipsing through the woods to find some ear rings some half blind old bat dropped.

Yeah, that's the hard part about starting a new game. Everyone has grand visions for what their character should have been, but it's nearly impossible to justify it against a 1st level character. You really don't start becoming "World-Renoun Heroes" until level 11, and "Heroes of Legend" would be Level 21.

So yeah, Twilight Sparkle and the gang beat what should have probably been a Paragon tier boss - Level 25 or so, minimum.

Which is why I never, ever, ever play or run 1st level characters. The rare times I play D&D (or a game with the same character structure, like Pathfinder) I skip straight to 4th level at least.

Well technically the average campaign hero is a cut above the rest, even at first level. It's suppose to justify being a great hero at any level. But yea, your right. You can't really justify a Hercelian hero at 1st level. But then again, if you want the well renowned hero, start at paragon.

This is why, as a DM, I heavily discourage lengthy and heroism-filled backstories. 1st level heroes should have backstories about their friends and family, how they learned what they know, and what they are after. A first level fighter who participated in a battle against hobgoblins is fine; one who personally slaughtered the hobgoblin chieftain and his guards is not.

Agreed. Backstories that involve some minor conflicts are one thing, but you weren't the hero of the last great war. I've always wanted to try a "Level 0" campaign - one where you actually act out significant portions of your backstory leading up to you becoming your Level 1 character. Why did you become a fighter? Who taught you magic? etc etc.

I'm doing that right now in a desert tribe style campaign. My character, a sorceress, can do just about nothing whatsoever. Her only abilities are her wits, some lame cantrips she can only cast 2 of each day, and her leatherworking skills.

The campaign is mostly roleplaying inspired and is going to have much less combat in it than others, but it's still the typical 'group gets together, fights for X reason, saves the world' scenario.

Something I'm definitely looking forward to is the upcoming DCC (Dungeon Crawl Classics) RPG. From what I've gathered, *all* characters start at level 0, and you've actually got to survive a adventure before you can become level 1.

Good luck with that. (Probably why you generate *four* characters at a time when doing chargen, and everything's random.)

Whenever I run a first levle I make it seam important so not just anyone can do it, For example saving a unicorn from some asshole goblins.

Generally I just tell my party what they're general aptitude is starting out and then they can build backstories around that (or adjust them to fit).

@Anthonox You have given me the best idea for a backstory ever. I would write a two hundred page epic of a young man, from a small village, who takes up a sword to defend his village, and then learns it's part of a bigger problem. He gathers together several honorable, like minded allies, and fights to free the world of tyranny. He then goes on fight an invasion of necromancers, then a djinn army, and finally facing down the titans which created the world, and intend to unmake it. Then, in his twilight years, he settles down, gets married, has a couple kids, and they have grandkids, one of whom he spends the last years of his life training and teaching, passing on his skills and warrior's code. The elderly warrior dies peacefully in his sleep.

And then the story ends with just two sentences.

"This is the legacy of my grandfather, for whom I am named. Now, evil has come again, and with my grandfather's blade, it is time for me to carve my own legend."

I'm not sure if that would be a good backstory or not. It would totally have a deep and detailed backstory for my character. That would run the last 30-40 pages. I do know it would be hilarious to have it read like a D&D version of Bleach, or Gurren Lagann. Epic backstory, tons of action, feats beyond the realm of mortal men, emotional depth, a happy ending, a plot twist, and a suitable explanation of why my character is still a novice, as well as his motivation, and character background.

It also explains where he got the sweet +5 sword at first level.

Yes. Unfortunately, Scootaloo managed to get the process backwards. There's a lesson to be learned here.

She knew that she didn't want a character that flew, but she figured that taking a pegasus that couldn't was a massive flaw with (presumably) considerable leverage in the bonuses department.

It could be interpreted as Scootaloo trading the training for the ability to fly for the training for the ability to attack more. There's no reason why she can't learn how to fly later, right? (In b4 Scootaloo episode in season 3)

Maybe she did that knowing that such a weakness will hinder her slightly. A lot of players out there instead of min maxing have a habit of creating weaknesses in their character for a bigger challenge.

Today is the day. Finally we get to see the royal wedding and will be introduced to Twilight's older brother and the third Alicorn Cadance. Now many of you may enjoy a new addition to the pony world. However, some of you are angry that a third Alicorn exists because it ruins the whole Alicorns are living goddesses thing. So I propose this. AFTER watching the episodes, we use this thread to discuss the two characters. Feel free to rant or rave about the couple, or discuss what you love and hate about them. Then afterwords if you still feel hatred towards the new alicorn, SHUT UP ABOUT IT.

The fans get tired of an entire series defined simply by the hatred of a character, especially since the hatred is based around them winding up with a character that they shipped with someone else. I all ready hate discussing Harry Potter books online because of this. And I happen to like Ron and Ginny.

OK, I'm getting off my soap box now.

Until otherwise stated I am going to assume that Candence is a goddess, abiet not one of the main two (think like a Greek good that isn't Zeus/Posiedon/hades). Right now I'm thinhing she's the goddess of love/fertility.

2. I personally like to think that her lack of flowing star mane means that Cadence wasn't originally an alicorn and that she was given the power and title of Princess for being particularly awesome or close to the princesses (Which of course must mean that soon Twi will get her witchcraft wish).

Unfortunately I'm getting hints. Kind of ridiculous when we never saw her but some people have started talking crap about her. Oh and if it turns out that Shining Armor is marrying a goddess of love.... way to go playa.

Just finished watching it. Greatest episode, bar none. Dragonshy? boring. Party of one? weak. They went all out for that wedding.

There was a fight scene guys. A FIGHT scene.

My life will never again be as good as that hour of epic.

Loved everything except the Tori Spelling commercial breaks. That was just a bad choice.

Also amusing that they took YET ANOTHER monster manual creature and made it canon! Another point for Hasbro ownership!

I enjoyed everything but the last 10 minutes of the broadcast. The ending felt a little rushed, but isn't that par for course? The team really succeeded in making something epic, though I can't help but wonder what they could've done with an extra 22 minutes.

And Cadence being the Goddess of Love has worked for me until now, so why stop?

Okay, seen the episodes now, and I have an unsettling theory. Cadence pulled out the Power of Love heart. Considering that friendly love is a form of love all the same, the elements of harmony seem to work along the lines of the power of friendship, and Cadence herself is an Alicorn with the cutie mark of love itself... Cadence is the most powerful pony-neigh- BEING in the entire universe Equestria is set in...which kinda begs the question how she got trapped like that, but I guess her power is extremely situational

It could be that their is no such thing as a male alicorn. Cadenza is Celestia's "Niece", like Blueblood was her "Nephew". So it could be that she isn't really any kind of goddess, just a pony lucky enough to be born an alicorn, and her special talent is inspiring love.

I've always questioned the idea that Luna and Celestia were goddesses anyway, especially in raising the sun and moon. The only thing they have going for them is the immortality, which I'm thinking maybe Cadenza doesn't have.

BTW I'm calling her that because its sooo much cooler. All ethnic and whatnot.

Finally managed to watch the episode, it was great. The only thing I didn't like though was the villain's song. They might as well dedicated a song to kicking puppies for how cliche it was. And yea, I'll just go ahead and accept Celestia as a demi-goddess at least.

And as a counter argument to Bronymous, they raise the fricken sun and moon. You have evidence of that on the first episode when Nightmare Moon showed up and the sun didn't raise like it was suppose to.

Yeah, I don't buy it, sorry. One would think someone who is immortal and controls the sun wouldn't be taken down Harry Potter style in one hit. I'll give her really old, and with age comes experience and wisdom, and the presence over those of shorter life. But goddess of any kind, demi, quasi, etc. is pushing it.

I do think she has had a less than reputable past that has since been "cleared up" in the history books, though. So that's something.

For the sun and moon argument remember that during the Hearths Warming episode it was said that the Unicorns handled that on their own before Celestia and Luna so it's not impossible for mortals to handle it and the sisters could just be powerful and long-lived as a result of being Alicorns without being goddesses.

As for my opinions on the episode I didn't like the villain, for a creature that disguises itself as others to feed she seemed awfully prone to behavior that easily gave her away. As an example near the end of the first part after she ran off and everyone blamed Twilight for being mean she could have just left well enough alone and nothing would have stopped her, instead she transported Twilight into the mines admitted to being evil and encouraged her to blast walls one of which separated her from the real Cadence, at least NMM's and Discord's mistakes kind of make some sense.

Cadence does have quite a bit of power, as you noted, but it is all focused on others. Bringing others together, empowering others...

She can supercharge other ponies, but can't use her power to directly benefit herself, at least as I can see it. So she was captured when she was alone, and kept in solitary confinement, so all her power was useless to her.

I disagree with the consensus and declare the finale to have been the weakest episodes I've seen to date.

Brother out of nowhere? Eh, okay. Brother out of nowhere with such a close bond to a lead? Uh...sure? Captain of the guard? Way to lead the nature vs. nurture argument, people.

The lead's sister-in-law to be is the third alicorn we've seen, a princess, and the former COOLEST babysitter, who was an unknown until this? Haven't we exceeded the contrivance quotient yet? Oh, and she's got the power of love on her side to enable her dashing captain to impossible levels of Save Everyone.

You know what? I'm willing to overlook all of that for the sake of a tale. What I can't overlook is the fact that an enemy army has merely been ejected from the capital of Equestria. It's still at large in the rest of the nation, without ever suffering casualties or even loss of power. The love that powers them is not kept under lock and key within Canterlot.

As for the main villain, she had Twilight broken by the end of the first episode, only to fix it by sealing her away someplace she could rescue the real Cadence and escape. If you wish to avoid having characters kill each other in the show, don't put them in positions where the audience should be asking, "Why don't you just shoot her?"

On the plus side, music was up to snuff and I quite enjoyed all of the fan service thrown around. They just couldn't carry the rest of the episode.

Why do I get the feeeling that Celestias Uncle made the changelings so he can have whatever type of food he wanted without having to make enemies with the elements of harmony, or he could have made them as a sick/Massivly genre blind joke for kicks. Besides if Celestia is a goddes it stands that her parents are in some God kingdom dealing with the Far more taxing job of dealing with other gods that want nothing more than to invade the world Equestria is on for thiere own gains. oh wait that was me, Damn im cruel and damn are changelings Delicious. this has been Malbutorius, the darkness signing off.

Common problem in quest givers. If they're more powerful/capable than you, why don't they just do it themselves. If they're weaker than you, then why not kill them for the reward that they're gonna give you anyway.

Ya know, royal weddings and all aside...

I just wanted to get back to the Lvl 1 adventures not being awesome bit.

As far as that goes, I strongly disagree. Lvl 1 characters shouldn't be off slaying gods or anything, but Lvl 1 adventures can still be pretty epic, in a realistic way - which for me is a lot cooler.

Case in point - my Dragon Age group. Their first adventure was to rendezvous with a caravan and escort an Earl's children back to his estate.

Sounds simple enough.

But when you also consider a land swarming with Dark Spawn (think orcs) and a treacherous uncle who was plotting to kidnap the kids after paying off the bodyguards (aka - the players) things get interesting fast.

By the end of it, the party thought they'd done a good job, having fought through a mess of Dark Spawn and rendezvoused with the kids - only to have the uncle play his hand.

Half the party sides with the uncle, half sides with "what's right" - and then there's an extremely tense showdown between the two sides - where the uncle actually takes one of the kids and puts a knife to his throat, daring anyone to stop him.

That was my Lvl 1 adventure (;

Basically, all I'm saying is that even at Lvl 1, it can definitely be epic. The only thing that's holding you back is your own imagination.

My groups almost always start with Lvl 1 adventures, and every Lvl 1 adventure I've GMed or played in so far has been a ton of fun.

You guys are just spoiled by your epic level shenanigans.

Funny thought though - since my groups always start off at Lvl 1, we never seem to get to epic lvl anyway.

Ah well, I don't feel like I'm missing much.

Start this out by saying I'm an old fogey in gaming, as I've been gaming for over 30 years now.
Starting a game with 1st level characters can be just as fun as playing with higher level characters.
Case in point: in 1st ed. AD&D I played a character that was introduced in the book Unearthed Arcana called a barbarian. In this system, barbarians were slooow to progress up levels (I believe it took 5,000 xp just to make 2nd when a thief would just need 1,250, but I digress). To offset that, the game rules were that any magic item that a barbarian destroys, he gets the xp of using the device.
In brief, during the lower levels of playing, my barbarian made many an enemy of magic-users in game. Shame that he couldn't get more xp for killing them as well.
In fact, his first adventure involved an NPC magic-user's wand of magic missiles, an argument over the barbarian's loud snoring and a mischievous cavalier trying to sleep in the same room with the barbarian.
Remind me to tell you the details later, if you wish.

For good 1st level adventures, you don't need to look much further than 4th ed. Remember back in 3.5 when four kobolds with 1d4 hp were considered a 'threat' in combat to a group of four level 1 PCs? Boring. Especially as it got hard to balance as the party got bigger, i.e. how do you calculate CR for a party of five? 4e streamlined it with 'one monster of level x per party member of level x'. But that's not all. Minions and elites let you adjust those numbers for good dramatic effect. I used it to great effect in my first adventure in 4e ever.

There were three PCs, a human Fey Warlock, an eladrin Devout Cleric/Orb Wizard gestalt, and a dwarven Battle Rager Fighter. Their first mission? Miners had found an odd tablet while digging, but before they could retreve it, goblins came in from the underground and took over the mine. The PCs were tasked with exploring the mines, finding the tablet, and getting it out while trying to do their best not to get killed by the goblins that were lurking throughout the tunnels. Their first encounter was against four goblin minions and two goblin rouges. A six of three battle gives the illusion of a hero overcoming great odds, but minions go down in one hit. This right here helps make a better heroic narrative. Outnumbered two to one, cleaving foes in half with one blow, that sort of thing. I also threw in a solo fight with a Shadow Bat, a level 3 monster, in a darkened room with a bridge over a raging river being the only safe place right in the center. It had the ability to attack while moving so that it couldn't be pinned down because it would fly over the darkened areas beyond the bridge. Being a level 3 monster that could only attack one of them at a time, it went down after a few rounds, but the players were genuinely relived that they had made it. After retrieving the tablet (and a pair of +1 magical items) the group ran into their last challenge: eight goblin minions, a goblin rouge, two goblin archers, and the goblins shamanic chief. A nice sized army, 2/3 of which will die in one hit, with a regular challenge on top of that, and the goblin chief was a level 3 monster yet again. It was a long and brutal fight, the minions did some good damage until the wizard started laying down area spells and popping several at once. The warlock got into a ranged duel with the archers and won due to his ability to gain concealment with movement, a feature they couldn't match. The fighter took out the rouge in close quarters so it couldn't back-stab the wizard. They then focused their attacks on the chieftain and finally took him out. The left the mines half dead, but with the tablet intact and the goblins routed from the tunnels. THAT is how you do a first level quest. Also, the quest completion XP was enough for level 2.

That's because Pinkie Pie is a 1st Edition Bard, instead of one of the easier, less awesome bards that came along later.

(For those who don't know, Bards in 1st edition AD&D were frightening. You had to have 10 levels in Fighter, Magic-user, and Thief, before you could even *begin* to be a bard. And this was a game system that really did end around 20th level...)

Problem is that she doesn't *know* she's got the talent/cutie mark of a bard.
Meaning she's going multi-class/re-roll into every other class until she gets it,
avoiding bards because they are too underpowered and silly for a player like her.

Yea, aka a level zero. You know, the kind that are trying to figure out what they are good at. And why is everybody demanding that Sweetie Bell should be as good as Pinkie Pie in order to be a bard? She's a filly while Pinkie Pie is a older teenager/adult 1. It's like saying that your kid isn't good enough to be a ball player because he is playing t-ball while the high schooler is playing baseball.

1. (I'm assuming teenager because assuming that she is as old as Dash and Dash and Rarity competed in the young flyers competition then that should make them minors. Though I can argue both sides all day.)

Oh, and if any one wants to play a level zero campaign, let me know and I'll either post a link on here or post the rules. It's worth trying once just for the chalange.

In 4th edition bards are actually considered one of the most powerful leaders in the game. They are good a buffing, debuffing, and positioning not only their companions but also the enemy.

i read a book long time ago. on that book existed a type of cleric who make his magic singing. the where called Runoyas or something like that. so en that context Sweteebell will be a Runoya XD.

for the other side. i have played big bunch of lvl 1 characters, ond only 3 over level 10. i remeber fondly a level 1 Elf Warrior-Mage, that killed a halfling thief npc whit a natural 20 on a bow atack. and make the rest of his band run away screaming "He Killed him Awfully!!!!!" XD. i hope i transladate the joke well enougth XD.

I've dealt with new players that attempt to make these super-optimized characters for combat or play classes that aren't a fit for their concept. They soon find out their mistakes. and that's okay!
It's particularly amusing when a min-maxer is new to the game and didn't get all the nuances of the system before building their character.

I'm dealing with one now - player made a monk and was find for a few levels, but now realizes that he concentrated so much on doing raw damage with an attack that he lacks in armor class, saves, and utility outside combat. So he's working to fix the issue now.

It's a learning experience, right? :)
Perhaps the player RPing as Sweetie Belle didn't think Bard would be a better fit. I'm sure those of us that run games have had numerous new players that made mistakes starting out.

Yeah, I'm familiar with that. As a rule, I tend to play concept-oriented characters. I develop who they are before I develop what they can do, because one influences the other.

This usually leads to characters who are less optimized than the power-gamer who builds a dual-class Necromancer specialist/Death Priest, because the priests have access to Enchantment/charm magics the specialist Necromancers aren't allowed to cast... (And yes, in case you're wondering, I gamed with a guy who did that, in fact.)

It's usually more challenging playing a sub-optimized character, because while it may fit your character idea better, it's usually not at the top of its class when it comes to combat, and that can leave you the second fiddle in combat.

The trick is to get the reputation for being the guy who doesn't care about character power level as long as you're having a good time. That way, when the really powerful stuff is being handed out, the GM will tend to give it to *you*, because they know you won't abuse it. I was given Woundhealer once in a game because of that, and I think I pulled it maybe three times over the campaign.

So there can be perks for being the sub-optimized color character. :)

Hear, hear!

My ex-con Wizard certainly wasn't optimized, especially compared to the Paladin in the group (which we all had to fight at one point), but I got my hands on a Rod of Wonder. And that saved our butts more times than I'd care to admit.

I recall one time at a convention there was a tournament a mad baron had to see who would be the next one to take his position, the tournament included things like an obsticle course filled with traps and had a troll at the end, a scavenger hunt in a moat filled with champagne and giant squid, an eating contest where all the food and most of the silverware was poisoned, an archery contest where the people competing were supposed to CATCH the arrow, a contest to see who could impress the baron the most using only themselves, the tournament grounds, and a catapult, and the main event, a rod of wonder duel.

A COUNTERFIT rod of wonder duel. I'm serious, they were just enchanted sticks with some paint, some of them even still had leaves on them. there was a 20% chance it would cast magic missile, a 20% chance it would do something worthless, a 20% chance it would permanently do something to your character (And in the more traditional game the following day you couldn't play if you weren't using the character you used in the tournament. I entered the tournament as a level 5 male human sorcerer, I left it as a level 3 and two thirds female centaur/unicorn/drow fighter/ranger and had feats set up so if I wanted to be effective in combat I had to dual wield jousting lances and not wear any armor. I was also a lovely shade of blue.) a 10% chance it would do something to the field, a 10 % chance it would do something to everyone ELSE still waiting for their turn to compete, a 10% chance it would summon a kung-fu chicken for three rounds, a 5% chance it would do nothing, and a 5% chance it would explode and knock you out.

At the very end of the games, the one with the LOWEST score had to be the new baron, something we were not informed of beforehand.

I hates chickens.

Set the wayback machine to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, the year roughly 1981 (now known as '1st edition'. Ironic as it is actually the second, from the LGB's. Of course it was parallel to the basic/expert/etc versions too. But I digress.)

Our little intrepid band gets hired to guard a local guy's chickens.

Yes some landed lordite (A viscount or some such) that raised like epic wonder cool prize winning chickens, and despite being within his stoutly guarded fortress of power (read, slightly oversized mansion with heavy walls) they have been being killed, one at a time, about twice a week, by some fowl method. (sorry, had too).

Anyway, long story short (and Monster manual played fast and loose) turns out that one of the chickens was a doppleganger, who just wanted a few square meals a day, some nice comfortable digs, but would get plucky for a bit of protein a couple times a week.

Ah the first level adventure. The key to that I belive, is showing that what they do matters. It's easy to picture the importance and impact of saving a kingdom from a rampaging dragon, or stopping the god of discord from shattering the world stone and loosing the unimaginable horrors that lie beyond. It is often hard to see the value in saving some farmers pigs. At least it is until they realize that these pigs are the mans entire worth, that his ability to pay his taxes, t provide for his family, to keep living the pleasant life of a farmer instead of doing what he would need to get them back, depends on this. For extra fun, let the PC's glimpse his old armor, and recognize it as the signature equipment of a great terror from a decade ago, who vanished abruptly and without explanation. Then use this later if you want.
