Several artists and writers in the fandom like to portray Cutie Marks as bad things, pigeonholing ponies into into one talent that they can't escape for the rest of their lives.

I personally believe that ponies can get lots of mileage out of their Cutie Mark talents, more than most people realize. Applejack's player demonstrates just a little bit of that.

I think, perhaps, that a Cutie Mark represent not so much the only thing a pony is good at, but more their primary passion. The one thing they really want to devote their life to (and also happen to be good at somehow).

Of course, having a single passion doesn't have to mean you're no good at everything else.

Wouldn't it be weird if people had cutie marks? It'd be tough for police to go undercover in, say, the mafia...

"Before we let you commit crimes with us, let me see your ass."
-Several moments later-
"Boss, he's a cop! He's got the scales of justice on his cheek!"

Nah, they'd probably get a tattoo or something to cover it up or change it. :P

I've thought about it, and have no real idea what my cutie mark would be. I may know what it'd reference, but no idea what it'd look like...

Well, as I recall, they just shine through tattoos or attempts to conceal them other than clothing...or maybe that was just headcanon from fanfics.
Incidentally - Spud, ye go by? - I love the FLAWLESS VICTORY declaration upon comment submission. ^_^

Just saying, the entire cubical of people looked at me strangely when I burst out laughing at this.

If cutie marks really did pigeonhole you like that, wouldn't that mean that Rarity's special talent was just finding gems? Or that the only thing that Pinkie was specifically good at was blowing up balloons? And I don't see how anyone could possibly make the cognitive leap from Derpy's bubble-butt to 'special talent: mail carrier.'

It seems obvious to me that cutie marks are very, VERY open to interpretation. Which is good, because the idea of getting a tramp stamp when you hit puberty that unerringly tells you the one thing you will be forced to do for the rest of your life is, to put it mildly, disturbing as all hell.

I interpret Rarity's cutie mark as meaning she has an affinity for "all that glitters," so to speak.

It's not just about fashion -- it's a lifestyle, darling.
