Hadn't thought of it in quite those terms myself, but it fits in a lot of ways if you slot Chrysalis in the role of an overbearing, abusive mother that takes all the fun and joy out of their lives while indoctrinating them to do her bidding.
Yep, pretty much. I had a feeling that was the case, but it was a while since I've seen it so I wasn't sure just quite how close the analogy was.
Given the cut scene, I can't help but imagine Rarity mumbling "ex-punk, actually" over a shot from "It Isn't the Mane Thing About You."
