I'm thankful for the meta.
Also, Newbiespud, I need ta talk to ya about something.

Why don't we give a story about something we're thankful for in regards to Tabletop?

Edit: Oh hey, top comic with an actual meaning.

It's Cadance, not Cadence.
Kiana 22nd Nov 2012, 2:07 PM edit delete reply
Kiana
Cadence is a word. Cadance is not. I suppose spelling it with two A's may be 'correct' in some areas, but I'm sticking to the language I spent the last twenty-three years learning, thanks.

Regardless, either spelling could be pronounced the same way.
Mudpony 22nd Nov 2012, 2:23 PM edit delete reply
The spelling of the name matters more than the spelling of an English word that is similar ;) In this case though, you can go either way for now.

According to Hasbro, her name is Cadance. In the credits for the show, it is spelled Cadence. Until such time that the two canon sources settle on a single spelling, I reckon people can use whichever they prefer.

Of course, if they do settle on one way, it'll probably wind up like Apple Bloom, where people will insist on spelling it wrong regardless ;)
CJT 22nd Nov 2012, 2:53 PM edit delete reply
In-show, it's an abbreviation for "Cadenza", so either "Cadance" was a typo in the version of the "show bible" given to marketing, or they changed it to "-ance" because they were worried that "Princess Cadence" couldn't be trademarked as easily.
Kiana 22nd Nov 2012, 5:38 PM edit delete reply
Kiana
Since the sources are conflicting, I'm going with the one that's an actual word and not, potentially, a typo.

I'll probably continue to spell it 'Cadence', even if all official sources are changed to 'Cadance', simply because Cadence is an actual word. Though I WILL accept Cadance as legitimate if all official sources use it.

For now, though, I'm going to politely accept that others have their opinion, which I will respect. Doesn't matter if I think it's wrong, since it is -their- opinion.
Kiranis 23rd Nov 2012, 12:55 AM edit delete reply
It's cadence. because her name was a play on words and the story of the show Both versions of this day Aria are a referance to the name Cadence Chrissys singing was a "False Cadence" While CaCence's singing is a "True Cadence" Them ore you know.
Kirnais 23rd Nov 2012, 12:56 AM edit delete reply
Cadence no CaCence's :/ I don't know how I got that.
Atosen 23rd Nov 2012, 2:10 AM edit delete reply
The name was almost surely based on the word cadence, but that doesn't necessarily mean the name is spelt that way. The "real word" argument has never carried weight in the realm of character names.

Some official sources have actually CHANGED from Cadence to Cadance. So I'm pretty sure the latter is intended to be official.

I don't much like it myself (I think it just looks nicer with an e), but I've switched to Cadance. I wouldn't begrudge anyone else their Cadence, though.
Kiana 23rd Nov 2012, 2:57 AM edit delete reply
Kiana
It's not argument, really. As I said, I'm fine with people not agreeing with me on it. "I'll stick with the one that's a real word" is just the primary reason -I- use Cadence.

Given, not having spellchecker whine at me every time I type it may play a part.

Twilight.

I predict she'll be an alicorn princess by the end of the season.
CJT 22nd Nov 2012, 8:41 AM edit delete reply
Even Hasbro's marketing department shouldn't be foolish enough to do that. Giving her a power boost would make it harder for her to interact with the rest of her team and harder to write stories for her.

The logical workaround would be to make _all_ of the Mane 6 alicorns, for six times the toys to sell, but that'll be the point at which it's time to switch to fan works exclusively.
Zuche 22nd Nov 2012, 1:27 PM edit delete reply
I suspect the Crystal Empire episodes suggested a way it could work. Every princess is a living demonstration of harmony, having features of unicorn and pegasus -- and I'm confident there's something of the earth pony in each of them as well.

Perhaps the current element bearers will be able to take on similar forms when they are manifesting the most powerful displays of harmony. If it's a temporary effect, you don't have to change all that much.

I'm not saying that's a good idea. I know I couldn't make it work. It's hard to see what it adds to the story or characters, the most important things.

CJT 22nd Nov 2012, 8:38 AM edit delete reply
Luna, for reasons mentioned in yesterday's thread.

Some fan interpretations of Celestia get into the same range (the portrayal in "Scootamom", for instance), but most - including canon - fall into "it's hard to empathize with someone I'd worship" territory.

"Whom the Princesses Would Destroy" has some great Celestia/Luna moments, mostly off-screen. The food fight being among the most memorable.
Atosen 23rd Nov 2012, 2:17 AM edit delete reply
I can't agree with CJT: that just makes empathising with her all the more fascinating, for me.

'Sides, Luna is just as divine as Celestia, isn't she?

My vote is Luna first, Cadence second, Celestia third.
Luna because she's so damn cute, and her story is truely moving.
Cadence because I'm a die hard romantic, and she's the embodiment of romance.
As for Celestia...I just can't manage to empathyze with her with how she's presented in the show. She's said emotional words, but her voice has had barely any actual emotion in it. In essence, I just don't know her.
Kiana 22nd Nov 2012, 5:43 PM edit delete reply
Kiana
Hm, interesting. Luna is my first choice for similar reasons, as well as for her being cute.

Celestia is second for me, because I'd kill for a reasonable and reliable leader. I can see how her voice might make her sound distant, but for me, her personality shines through her actions. (Yes, that pun was intentional.) The voice is probably because she's required to have a 'royal bearing' at all times.

Cadence comes in last because I don't know her. I can appreciate the romance angle, but for both episodes she's been in, she's essentially been a prop. She doesn't do much in the season two finale until the very end and she lets Shining Armor do all the talking in season three.

She's basically just there to give the episodes a sense of urgency. And to be used as a javelin. (Admittedly, that was amusing, but it's not a character trait.)

I like Luna the most because she's the freakin' moon princess and her archaic speech is both awesome and adorable. I respect Celestia the most because she's proven herself an adept ruler, able to balance order and chaos for a harmonious and generally Good state. (Part of that might be colored by my first pony OC's irrational hatred of Celestia... he blames her for some atrocities committed by officers in her army without her knowledge.)
Cadence... okay, she's awesome too, but too much of her awesomeness that I think of when evaluating them is fanon, even compared to the others.

Maybe I'm missing the meta. Is this a case where players are at risk of getting their characters killed at the next zebra crossing?
Stephani-D 22nd Nov 2012, 10:37 PM edit delete reply
It's because the characters are second-guessing themselves and the DM. You get the thinking of 'she looks evil, but since the looks evil the DM will expect me to treat her like she's evil, so maybe the DM is tricking me and she's good? Or maybe the DM realizes I'm thinking this way and she really is as evil as she looks?'
It's meta because they're taking into account that they're playing a game.

"Dagger of Wonder"? That sounds like a setup for far too many interesting anecdotes.

My DM set it up that every time i hit with the dagger of wonder, he brought out the "D100 table of WHEEEEE!". There was one time did sneak attack damage to a guard only to turn him into an adult dragon. Needless to say the party was none too happy about the angry dragon.

I am thankful first for friends, and by correlation God and tabletop RPGs. To make a long story short, I didn't have friends in Elementary School, prayed, got one, prayed, got another, etc. By Senior year of High School my D&D group from Middle School had gone from 3 to 11. Eventually I prayed to make friends on my own and now I have Pinkie Pie tendencies.
I am thankful for family, due to mine being awesome in a geeky way and my BBBFFs (I have two!), who brought me into D&D when I was 8. My family has its ups and downs like most families, but I am glad there are so many ups. Plus, one of my BBBFFs is also a brony, so we can share that (and video games, cats, anime, D&D, et cetera...).
I am thankful for God for making SCIENCE, geekdom, nerddom, creativity, fun, comedy, tragedy (though I would prefer it stay in fiction), and everything.
I am thankful for Tesla. And a bunch of other cool people, but he is the one I would like to note.
I am thankful for cats. Without my cat Trixie, I would probably have committed suicide from depression when I was 10. I consider my cats little guardian angels.
I am thankful for MLP and bronies as it has brought new faith to me both for the internet community and children's cartoons. And is completely awesome. Through this I am thankful for all that make it possible.
I am thankful for violence in fiction. I like it a lot and would like it to stay in fiction.

Clearly Pinkie's player has never heard of Etrigan.
Raxon 22nd Nov 2012, 5:10 PM edit delete reply
Raxon
Etrigan, strictly speaking, isn't evil. Chaotic Neutral at best.

On second thought, Batman: The Brave and the Bold may not be the best of research for canon.

Still has the best Aquaman, though.
Zuche 22nd Nov 2012, 6:24 PM edit delete reply
Like most comic book long runners, Etrigan's alignment depends on the writer. Alan Grant's version performed a musical in a bid to conquer Hell ("Bub, I've got you, 'bub.") and converted to a fundamental Christian sect in order to win the U.S. presidency so he'd be able to nuke Hell from orbit after the previous goal didn't quite pan out, so he was kind of the chaotic evil side. The Cosmic Odyssey version had a co-dependent relationship with his host. The Alan Moore version in Swamp Thing made a deal with Jason Blood that they would each become more like the other, and executed it in the most effectively lawful evil fashion possible -- because as Blood became more and more like Etrigan over the years, Etrigan in turn became more and more like Etrigan as well. Get Keith Giffen and J.M. deMatteis involved, however, and you get someone of a more neutral evil bent, at least as commonly depicted back before 3rd edition, where it was an alignment both mercenary and apathetic.

His current depiction by Paul Cornell puts him somewhere between neutral and chaotic evil. Paranoid. Possessive. Always looking for advantage in a game he's always trying to be first to sabotage, since losing everything is worth it if it hurts anyone who might be plotting against him. Fun times.

As for Aquaman, yes, it's certainly one of the best versions, as much as I enjoy Peter David's take on Atlantis and Bruce Timm's take on Pater David's barbarian king version of the sea king. I laughed when Justice League presented the Justice League vs. a DCU version of the Defenders, but Aquaman vs. the "Wonder Twins" was also priceless.

Brave anf the Bold Aquaman is too showy for my tastes.

I prefere Justice League Aquaman.

Raxon 23rd Nov 2012, 7:33 AM edit delete reply

I prefer BATB Aquaman, because he demonstrated some of his more badflank canon abilities. Aqua sword and aqua shield, and his signature thing, riding a pair of dolphins/turtles/sharks/etc like skis with reins.

Also, BATB endeared me for having one of the best one-shot villains of all time. The Music Meister!

[edit]: Super Friends Aquaman had one power I wouldn't mind having. He doesn't need water balloons to start a water fight. He just turns down the cohesiveness of his water balls, and they're okay to ambush random people with!

Huh, I wonder why the DM never stated they actually went *into* the field of Poison Joke as they followed along. Or how Zecora didn't come into contact with the flowers. This is just asking for the players to argue, rules lawyer style.

They're kinda getting set up with no warning (and as far as they know, they didn't even get into the flowers, to their knowledge). They'd probably get chances to roll passive saves as well, regardless of knowing/not knowing.
Kiana 22nd Nov 2012, 5:48 PM edit delete reply
Kiana
Maybe there's more description from the DM than what we see in the text boxes?

It's possible that the description given to the players isn't shown because, well, it would be redundant since we can SEE the scene they're imagining.
Zuche 22nd Nov 2012, 6:46 PM edit delete reply
Who says Zecora didn't come into contact with poison joke? If you've got the remedy back home, the best way to lure pursuers into your "trap" is by walking into it yourself.

As for how suspicious they might have been about the flower patch, they're playing ponies in a land where flowers are raised as food. It blends in fairly easily as descriptive text, especially if the DM provides a lot of this (which seems essential to this setting). Maybe they'd have been more alert if the flowers were described as red, which we tend to associate more with danger. Maybe if these were plants that would leave visual cues of the danger they present, they'd have been suspicious, but poison joke isn't likely to be strewn with the bones of its victims.
Kiana 22nd Nov 2012, 7:02 PM edit delete reply
Kiana
Actually, wait. The DM mentioned UNNATURALLY BLUE flowers and then Rainbow Dash stated she was chasing after Zecora. So she, at least, ran through them. (Or flew over them, fact remains.)

So no issue here, I don't think.

Whatever Meta/OOC stuff the players would say, it was what comprised the next room in the alien ship. The party shaman joked about this ship needing a pool and it could be the alien version of Titanic. The next room-- Olympic Swimming Pool.

They didn't catch on until the team sniper mentioned that someone on this ship was pilling his leg and then he nearly loses one to a xenomorph that came up from a floor drain and tried eating his toes. :D

Good times.

Ah, I'm thankful for players that easily amuse me.

I wonder how the Poison Joke effects are going to go. Specifically, Flutterguy. I'm envisioning the DM bringing in a voice-changer. (A friend had a DM who did stuff like that, and Pinkie's player brought a rubber chicken that one time...)

"Set up to think she's nice"? You were told flat out that she was evil. What part of that sounded nice?

The metavoice. It's like playing in an all-human campaign where all the villagers fear that one elf that comes through every few months.
