Another weird story turn from... wait, Twilight this time??

In other news, my recruitment for the Fallout: Equestria Pony Tales game was a resounding success. I got 19 excellent submissions and had to painfully wittle it down to 6. It was not an easy task. Many thanks to everyone who applied, and you can all look forward to the podcast in the future!

Grats on the player selection, Spud!

Now, down to the matter at hand.

Tell a story about a time where a whole game got derailed due to someone abandoning the plot to study something or figure out something not understood.

Well... Heck, any sandbox game is like that, especially if you have easily distract-able players like me. RPG or not.

For example, it's a great excuse to maintain your sanity in Cthulu. "I know there are mysterious tentacles over in Innsmouth but I need to do more research at this library first."

We had it happen on a railroad-type game :D
Our team was investigating the Jersey Devil. The first fight we had with one was at an abandoned warehouse. Despite the numerous clues that told us to follow where the creature flew off too, and the clues to tell us to follow the money of a large purchase of unusual mystical paraphernalia, the team leader continued to have us go back again and again to that abandoned building thinking that was the key. It wasn't. At all. :)

But doing research at the library is how I always end up losing SAN.

I don't think there's a way of NOT losing sanity in a Cthulu game.

I had one game where doing research in a library, one character looked for a 'good book'...and rolled a crit fail on their search check, so they found Twilight.

...Of course, this was an Infinite Library between planes, where each book represented every single copy of that book across every plane, so they happily burned it. Then they went on to find the rest of the series and burn those copies too.

So sometimes you need to do research in libraries. ...And burn some books...

Oh, but the story time:
This happens often, so I will just give my favorite example, and the Ponyfinder one. I was GM'ing this one.

It also happened in a library. A library in the ancient tower of the city of Babylion, now underwater at the center of the Braymuleda Triangle...

The story thus far was a column of light had appeared from this tower, and demons were being forcefully summoned from it (which they didn't like) and it was destroying the stars in its path (as it was a seemingly endless pillar that was nigh-impenetrable from this side). So while Celestia and Luna, who were the closest Princesses, worked on moving the stars out of its path, we were sent to turn it off. Our party was a 30th level party consisting of Crystal Wishes the magic item smith (Celestial Sorcerer and Eldritch Godling Unicorn), Noun Phrase the martial arts teacher and monster hunter (monk, fighter, and armor bonded earth pony), Gears Gadget the steam punk inventor (Gadgeteer and gunslinger earth pony), Tale Weaver the journalist (rogue and pathfinder chronicler pegasus), Artifact the Museum owner and adventurer archeologist/real archeologist (Bard(archeologist) and dark delver earth pony), Speed Chaser the Ultra Pony Roller Derby champion “Pony X” and shy mailpony (monk and time thief pegasus), and by this time Speed's evil double Sprite Chaser (the same) who had join the party as Speed's 'sister' and as “Pony Z”.

So anyway, we entered a library with all the written works of an entire ancient civilization. Needless to say, Artifact was excited. So was the rest of the party. Artifact though immediately went for the large book on the podium that was open and practically had a sign saying 'plot here'. Tale Weaver and the SC sisters went looking around the library. Tale Weaver and Artifact learned the language a
