Some groups behave on the assumption that the world they're playing in operates on a base level of rationality. Others... don't.

I have no doubt some D&D old-timers are going, "Pfft, breaking the sound barrier? Figured that out ages ago."

By 3.5 rules, 1056 peasants, at 5-foot intervals, can through readied actions (if you're stingy) transport an object 1 mile in 6 seconds.

It kind of breaks down for weaponization, though. Because there is no conservation of momentum in the rules, the object in question leaves the last peasant's hand no faster than he can throw it.

While weaponization of the the railgun technique isn't practical, the ability to transport goods from A to B at mach speed is still useful for mercantile purposes to get around paying wizard guild fees. ;)

Eh? It doesn't take that long for peasants to walk a mile. Just give them each a number and have them stand 5 feet past the one before them. Maybe have them live in huts along the mile, so they can file out to the line and stand around during the day (if paid to maintain the transport line, and some kingdoms could easily afford 105.6 gp per mile per day).

If at least some of the peasants are literate, this doubles as as a manned scout post: anywhere along that line, if trouble or untoward sorts come through, the peasants jot down a description (1 action or maybe a free action) and pass it along. Or perhaps abuse "talking is a free action": each one yells a warning, and the warning ripples toward both ends within 6 seconds.

I'm reminded of a Simpsons episode where Bart lined up 20 megaphones and then yelled into the first one. The resulting shockwave that came out was devastating. I'm envisioning this line of peasants doing something similar. Somehow.

Given what happens in the anime, I suspect what we're looking at is the player comes up with a really cool idea, and it percolates in the back of the GM's mind for the game session until later. This is a great example of "damn that's a good idea... I'm gonna use it!"

Not really; just keep up the weight loss and try and put some savings back into my account. The past few years have wiped out pretty much everything I'd raised and I'd like to get some back in my account

Finally finish my FOE fanfic that I started a year and a half ago. I'm working on Chapters 9 and 10 at the moment and finally there seems to be light at the end of this tunnel!

Outside of that? Probably be more socially active in general. Maybe be more outgoing at EFNW this year or something like that. I'd also like to improve on my drawing skills when I find the time to do so.

Try not to snap and murder anybody this year. I've made the same resolution every year since 2003 and I haven't broken it yet! Considering how bad my temper can be, this is more impressive a feat than you'd think... This is why I play video games/ tabletop RPGs. Because when I'm murdering pixels/ random imaginary enemies I am not feeling the urge to murder people who annoy me.

I do a panel about that at conventions. "Science of Equestria". Check it out. Remembering that the luminiferous aether was a thing is what tied my theory for the solar system together, and tied THAT in with the Rainboom. I imagine it's a bit like how Newton felt when he realized the same force could pull apples down and hold the planets in orbit around the sun... writ smaller of course.

The most likely speed for the Sonic Rainboom is actually mach 1. Dash started at the top of cloud layer and made it all the way to the ground in about 30 seconds, making her average speed about mach 1. Since she was going slower at first and faster at the end, with the rainboom in the middle, it seems likely that the rainboom occurred at mach 1 and she was going almost mach 2 by the time she reached the ground.

That was my conclusion, albedoequals1 (heh, nerd joke in your name! I get it!), but I came about it in a different way.

The audible "boom" only occurs approximately at what I call the "rainboom point". Ergo, the "Rainboom point" must be about mach 1. The visible 'cone' around her before that point must therefore be something other than a mach cone. As for what it is, we can only speculate. Said speculation is too long to go into here.

Oh, albedoequals1, I forgot to add: I hadn't considered taking the cloud-layer-to-ground distance divided by time. What are you assuming for the cloud ceiling? The bottom of a standard stratus cloud? Cloudsdale appears to be stratocumulous, but it's artificially constructed so that might not mean anything. I also don't know if the ceilings are different for those, anyway... been way too long since I took any courses about that.

in 3.5 a Ruby Knight Vindicator With Travel Devotion and Divine Metamagic (Persist spell) who uses a Persistent Footsteps of the Divine can then expend the spell to add in 10 feet of movement for every one of the 14,400 rounds of the spells current duration this will leave them with a minimum move speed of 14480 feet per round and the ability to expend turning attempts for additional move actions during their super speed round.

That was possible before Footsteps of the Divine was errataed to use the term "discharge" and therefore no longer be a legal target for Persist Spell. Sound barrier breaking is still possible in 3.5 - for instance, a mercury dragon (Dragons of Faerun) with the Shadow Creature template (Lords of Madness) has 3 racial hit dice, +4 LA, and a 300 ft fly speed, which can be doubled by a level in Blade Dancer and doubled again by carrying a Rapid Wrath weapon from Ghostwalk. Flying downward to move at double speed, with the Run feat to move 5x base speed as a full action, a Belt of Battle (Magic Item Compendium) to take an extra full action as a swift action once per day, and using a tempo bloodspike (Magic of Eberron) to gain a move action as a free action, one can move 26,400 feet in a round, or 4,400 feet per second - almost Mach 4. Add speed bonuses from other items, feats, spells, psionic powers, soulmelds, and class features as desired.
