It took me until the last pass to remember Oh yeah, this was a Mass Effect 2 thing and I've already established Rainbow Dash as a BioWare player, so I can just directly reference Lair of the Shadow Broker.

Which I'm kind of weirdly ashamed of, because I was that guy who went through the entire original trilogy nearly six times to see all the classes, choices, romances, and butterfly effects. You'd think I wouldn't be coy about it.

See also the Dread Pirate Roberts effect. It's quite a good opportunity if you're prepared to invest.

I saw a T-Shirt that had a skull and crossbones on it and said "I am Dread Pirate Roberts #34796. Ask me about Franchise Opportunities in your area!" It massively amused me.

I've seen that in bumper sticker form. I too was amused.

And with how loud Pinkie was, they now need to buy the silence of Pony Joe. Assuming he's not Con Mane...
Dragonflight 20th Feb 2018, 8:19 AM edit delete reply
I'd expect Pony Joe would just give Pinkie a sly grin, and say, "You *clearly* don't know about Sunny Sky and her midnight donut runs."

To which of course, Celestia blushes, Twilight giggles, and the other ponies dogpile the Princess for details.

She stole the Thieves Guild.

Now that's meta.
Blyndpwn 20th Feb 2018, 7:41 AM edit delete reply
And the heist of the century. Seriously, I can't think of anything harder to steal than an entire organization dedicated to theft itself.
Guest 20th Feb 2018, 9:37 AM edit delete reply
It might be dedicated to theft itself, but not theft *of* itself. That'd be the government's specialty, so Celestia had a homefield advantage.
Classic Steve 20th Feb 2018, 10:37 AM edit delete reply
How about an *anti*-theft organization?
ZhonLord 20th Feb 2018, 6:54 PM edit delete reply
I mean it's no stealing an Elder Scroll from the center of an empire, but it's definitely something right?
Jennifer 21st Feb 2018, 4:22 AM edit delete reply
In a sense, Vetinari did it first.
Hariman 21st Feb 2018, 1:43 PM edit delete reply
Cohen the Barbarian stole an omen, and the stole an entire empire, just by sitting on the throne and being too badass to assassinate or deny.

He also appointed the least ambitious and most inexperienced person available as his Grand vizier.

I love how the fans here are literally intelligent enough to guess every twist right before it happens. I wasnt even suprised at all here.

A very wise friend once told me that a writer actually wants the audience to figure out the twists and turns... the moment right before the reveal. So that the audience member gets both the surprise and the vindication of paying attention and being intelligent.

Or at the very least, a writer should aim for that.
Guest 20th Feb 2018, 11:38 AM edit delete reply
A wise friend, indeed. A story where nothing can be predicted is incomprehensible, not a story. Even subversions need something ahead of time to show they're possible within the setting, otherwise the subversion is just nonsense.

Have you noticed any differences between writing a comic and planning a campaign as a DM?

Other than the players more often picking up on the intended plot, but less often coming up with off-the-rails of their own?

But where did the Alicorn Amulet come from?
BackSet 20th Feb 2018, 5:00 PM edit delete reply

I bet the gm has pages of backstory on that.

Unless they've taken a cue from the darths and droids gm and learned not to plan more than five minutes into the game.

Why is there no like button!
Hariman 20th Feb 2018, 7:28 PM edit delete reply
That wasn't explained in the original FiM, or in comic.

But, it was explained that Rarity's jewel smuggling job was what Elusive used to pay for the Alicorn Amulet.

Also, we suspect that the Alicorn Amulet was a phylactery. So do the characters. Or at least one of the characters.
Dragonflight 21st Feb 2018, 7:50 PM edit delete reply
Well, Sombra's gotta come from *somewhere*.

Kinda funny how RD's player apparently likes Bioware's stuff, but in D&D she mostly goes for the most blunt and violent option.

Does play Bioware games and such similarly? Or does she enjoy plot, setting, and roleplaying more in video games than in D&D?
Mykin 20th Feb 2018, 11:29 PM edit delete reply
Mykin
Honestly, she probably likes the feeling of being an awesome renegade action-heroine that kicks butt and romances all the sexy aliens without breaking a sweat. I'd actually be surprised if we find out later that she was a Full Paragon FemShep and actually took the time to read all the sidestories and do all of the random side quests. You know, the time consuming stuff that most people ignored in favor of shooting more aliens, only to then realize that that stuff would become helpful in the third game due to the whole annoying "Galactic Readiness" thing and no I'm not bitter!...
Guest 21st Feb 2018, 4:32 AM edit delete reply
You can be blunt and violent in Bioware games, you just have to not give a fig about the consequences is all.
Hariman 21st Feb 2018, 1:46 PM edit delete reply
She probably plays reasonably Paragon, but takes ALL the renegade interrupts.
Dusk Raven 22nd Feb 2018, 1:00 AM edit delete reply
Given that she knew a side-quest enough to reference it when trying to explain parasprites to Fluttershy's player, I figure she at least pays a little attention to the context.

It's just... Knights of the Old Republic 2, at least (Made by Obsidian, I know, who I think are actually better than Bioware), had so much dialogue in it that I can't imagine someone playing a game like that and only being in it for the action.
Hariman 22nd Feb 2018, 1:24 AM edit delete reply
Here's a thought:

Rainbow only plays hack and slash in D&D, but has a MUCH wider variety of games she plays, though most games she likes let her play badasses.
SilverShadow4 24th Feb 2018, 9:40 PM edit delete reply
It could just be that this character in particular is the hack-n-slash type but she does play other character types. We have only seen this one.

If someone tried to judge me based off only one of my D&D characters, they would have a very skewed view of me because every one is different lol

No harm in outing yourself as a ME-fan.
I find it much worse that you think six playthroughs are enough :P
Hariman 22nd Feb 2018, 1:27 AM edit delete reply
Hmm. Renegade/Paragon, plus Red/Green/Blue endings...

Yeah, six playthroughs for the major points. It's another matter if you're going for all romances and all variations of romances, or seeing how few characters you can have survive the Suicide Mission without completely scrubbing out.

Also... damn ME3 DLC. I'd have at least started that, if I didn't still have to pay another $30 to $40 dollars for the Citadel and other DLC.
DeS_Tructive 23rd Feb 2018, 8:13 AM edit delete reply
DeS_Tructive
The sad part is that the DLC (especially Citadel) is so extremely worth it, especially when combined with some of the absolutely brilliant mods that have been made. Even if you only run the graphics updates, it feels like a modern game (definitely better graphics and animations than Andromeda :P) With the new playstyle and content from DLC and mods, you have enough material for another 2-3 playthroughs.

...Personally, I'd've instead finagled a way to put Rarity at the head, since she's actually been a member and seen the workings and the like... But this, too, is fairly Celestia.
