Guest Author’s Note: “Does it help if I say I’m studying music production and have met plenty of drummers who can play multiple instruments and sing and can in fact carry a tune?
No? Well, it was worth a shot.
It’s interesting to me the ratio of players who like to bring things into their character based on their own personal interests and how many choose to play characters that have interests and skills the player has never in their life ever considered pursuing.
Story Time Prompt: What characters have you made based on your own hobbies or interests? And have you ever made a character with personal interests that are antithetical to your own?”

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

I know a drummer who can sing.
I never said he was a good singer. Or drummer.

I always tend to gravitate to the magical, intellectual archetypes in any system. They seem the most interesting to me because they're the ones I'd personally want. Meanwhile, multiple others in my playgroup don't understand why you wouldn't want to play a walking tank given the opportunity. That's the beauty of character creation; there's something for everyone.

I didn't notice until somewhat recently, but all the characters I make are atrociously evil in one way or another. Which is odd, because IRL I'm a thoughtful person who just wants other people to be happy. It's like sitting down at a table makes flip from "I think I'll make some sandwichs for that homeless person I saw yesterday" to "I happen to be running low on rations, and this homeless person, who is homeless because I burned his house down, could make enough rations for five people."

I'm a make-ey person, and like constructing things and creating permanent positive changes. So I always keep trying to play crafters or artificers in games, but the rules are never very good for them (at least not in the types of games I play).

So I'm making my own game system, where crafting will actually be a core par of the mechanics, just as thought-out and integrated as any other!

So the drummer can carry a beat, but does she got rhythm, or does she ain't got rhythm?

No I ain't got rythm,
(sounds like rythm to me)
No I ain't got rythm,
(seems like they all agree)

I'm 6.5 feet tall and I'm a shy, calm person.

I usually play Dwarf with a big axe and a very very short temper.

In fact my last character was called 'Smurfette' and wear a pink mail chain.

Why, because when people start mocking my name or my armor, I start to laugh with them louder and louder, until I abruptly stop and began axing the ones dumb enough to mock me.
I guess my characters had the anger issues I wish I have.

I generally make characters that share one single trait with me, just to keep them grounded, but are otherwise as different from me as possible. I've been me for decades, and it's getting a bit boring. Time to be someone else. In particular, it's fun to play someone with a positive trait that I lack, since if I roleplay it hard enough, I can actually train myself to have more of that quality in real life.

I was in a mutants and masterminds campaign, where we made characters based on us, and our powers were ones that made sense for us. I had the ability to modify objects at the mathematical level. As long as it was a similar object, I could transform something into something else, and imbue it with powers. (I had transform and imbue with the flaws others only objects only, only by touch, I think one of two others, and required knowledge mathematics roll to activate). For example I could take a plastic sword, turn it into a real sword that shot fireballs, or take a shopping cart and turn it into a go kart with the speed power.
( also could disintegrate objects, but only while touching them and singing. My GM asked "In Japanese?", and I responded with "can that be a flaw?, he said yeah, and I said then yeah only in japanese. This power I discovered while driving home, which you know was fun.

I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I made a character based on my interest in Martial Arts, and my obsession with the occult. I have built the outline of a character who is a warlock/monk mix, who only has 3 levels warlock, but due to the connection to his patron, who he unintentionally made a connection with while he was training to astral project. The patron is basically a abboration that had fused a portion of itself to his soul, giving him dark powers and a twisted second "personality" that fights him for controls!

Not strictly hobbies/interests; but I seem to have a marked tendency to make characters smarter than me IRL. I'm kind of a impatient, low-wisdom sort, but a decent number of my characters are wizards, detectives, manipulators, or just smooth operators who should be ready for anything. Probably wish fulfillment on my part.
