MD: ANYWAYS, Applejack, let me get you caught up. This is Twilight Sparkle, she’s new to this dimension, and a few moments ago, she stood up to a bully to help Fluttershy.
AJ: This the same bully you keep usin’ out on us?
MD: Ssssssure!
Twilight Sparkle: You have a regular bully NPC?
AJ: Whuzzat?
MD: Non-Player Character, AJ. Twilight, you gotta remember we’re the only ones here who know how the game works.
Twilight Sparkle: Is she someone I should worry about?
MD: Well Sunset Shimmer-
(phone buzz)

MD: Aw crap, I need to take this. Can you gals fill her in?
AJ: Ah’ll do mah best, seein’ as Ah don’t know how this game works.
MD: Sorry…
Guest Author's Note: "AJ is a hard character to write for the Alt Six, especially from the Friendship is Dragons side. The easiest sort of way to make her different is to have her...well, be someone incapable of metagaming. That's...technically impossible (in my opinion) because of the complex nature of games, but at the very least, this AJ is the most unfamiliar with game terminology and mechanics.
Another subject in this comic: phones! Phone calls in the middle of a game are the absolute worst. I've been fortunate enough that it only happened a few times, but because I generally keep my phone quiet, and my groups are loud, the phone calls I've missed have tended to end up with a lot of apologizing or a brand new game of phone tag. Fortunately, it hasn't been anything important, but still, I don't like having to explain that I missed giving someone the information they needed in a timely manner because I was busy convincing the Burger King that I was, in fact, a model employee and not a saboteur.
Story Time Prompt: Any key moments in an RPG ruined by a phone call, or any phone calls ruined by an RPG moment?"
Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: February 20th.
Not a phone call but illness. I was in the middle of a Wild Talents game (d10 system super hero game) and I just kept feeling worse and worse and worse. I should have known something was wrong when I decided to sit on the floor at the comic book store we played at at the time instead of waiting for the table and chairs to be brought out. An hour into our 2-3 hour game I could barely keep my head up and had to leave, and it was during an intense moment of our game too. Soon as I got home I had to pray to the porcelain gods. So yeah, RPG moment ruined lol
Isn't it the other way around? With SunsetDM having experience as a player, and trying to run a game for a bunch of newbies who are still trying to figure things out?
Had a session interrupted early one when one player got stranded due to a flat tire (had a spare tire, but didn't have the tire iron to unscrew the lug nuts). Me an another player went out to help change his tire and get him into the session. Happy ending!
Honestly, as a DM I have come to just accept players not coming to the game able to give it their full attention. I've had ADHD for years, and while it's manageable without medication these days, it would be pot calling the kettle for me to get upset with them. I actually welcome interruptions these days, as I get to use that time to prep things that weren't ready, and make adjustments that I wasn't planning on but realized at the last minute that I need.
I have no problem with players needing to answer phone calls, but I'm the GM for like 75% of my group's games, so a phone call to me is a good way to derail my train of thought and put everything on hold for longer than is comfortable.
