Regardless, FS still has the best Diplomacy and Intimidate. They'd be fools not to bring her along, whether she wants to or not. Though, I am wondering where her +2 to Diplomacy and Intimidate are coming from... not sure what background benefit does that.

That pretty much just makes it a giant eye in the sky which isn't very scary.

Or else a grinning moon with just one eye. Again, not very scary. And before you argue, cyclopses aren't scary because of their one eye, they're scary because they're monsters that would eat you when given the chance.

Pfft, the moon is hardly scary. Majora's mask itself is much scarier, just on account of it's huge, staring, crazy eyes.

In fact, almost every scary picture of a psycho is pretty much focused on the eyes (and the grin). Especially when you can see the exact state of insanity in said eye, from it's pupils, blood vessels and such.

I remember the time my friend tried to be "as dragon" as possible without actually being a dragon in dnd 3.5.

In one case he convinced the dm to let him be a dragonborn and half-dragon at the same time.

In a less ridiculous case he was a prismatic dragon-wrought kobold, which is known for cheesing sorcerer levels, but all he wanted to do was fly around and hit people, so it was allowed.

It was hilarious when he acted out his fly-by attacks with a high squeaky voice.

I find that most people are willing to do anything a child asks, so long as the child makes it known they will be severely beaten if it doesn't happen.

Apparently it also works in DnD.

Nah, Spike almost got killed/beaten for eating a gem of another adult dragon in another cave.

Having him ask a dragon that's trying to sleep to move / stop sleeping would be the equivalent of having Dennis the Meanace harass Mr. Wilson.

We've had the opposite effect in our campaigns; any time children have been involved in our campaign, it has ended very poorly especially for the children. Hell, that's half the reason one of our groups fell apart, since one of the players was a child-hating scumbag, and acted on that in the game. For example, the DM used a street urchin as an adventure hook, which we all unanimously elected to ignore. Now, I'm no fan of children, but you won't see me drop-kicking a kid for no good reason, especially one who has already been battered and beaten. Morality aside, this stunt brought the town guard about, and even the Neutral Evil guy in the party was like, "WTF, man?" (in character, no less). This isn't even the worst story about that campaign and child violence, just the only funny one.

Ooh ooh, Child Slavery, Child Slavery! I do that one a lot. You don't even really have to have a reason, you just say "We execute the villagers, but keep one or two of the children alive to watch us burn the bodies."

Now ask me how I can get away with this when every other player is Good- especially the Paladin.

I'm gonna need a moment to type the story out and give it context, otherwise, you won't fully appreciate this, and why the group eventually came to blows over this... *grabs smoking jacket, fez, pipe, and whiskey glass, and turns on record player*

All right, story time! So this was a third edition campaign was an odd bunch (quite the feat considering we had an NPC half-orc rogue in this campaign named McGiggles).

Party setup was a dwarf rogue, elf fighter, half-orc cleric, halfling wizard, and human barbarian and paladin (paladin being me), with everyone being some iteration of neutral, except for me and the dwarf, who are Lawful Good and Neutral Evil respectively. The alignments thankfully weren't a problem, so much as the people, and by people, I mean the barbarian, who used his chaotic natural to justify crazy stuff. It's be like if you gave the The Ultimate Warrior of WWF fame leather armor, a battleaxe, and more brain damage. Paranoid, crazy, and uninhibited are not a good combination, especially after one of your first acts in adventuring is burning a village, starting with the orphanage, to the ground (to be fair, it was an accident). Being the moral compass of the party, I at least tried to keep us from being completely irredeemable, saving some of the kids and evacuating the rest of the villagers. Believe it or not, we made money for saving the citizens, even though, the whole reason the village burned was because we were trying to stop a bandit leader hiding in the orphanage (hence the burning; he started it, just our barbarian made it worse). Plus, it was all in character, so no one was mad...yet.

Cut to a few weeks later, and we're still causing mayhem across the countryside, with me doing my best to stay a good guy, despite being a wanted criminal; I think the justification was I couldn't uphold the justice and purity and all that rot if I was dead. Anyway, the guy playing the barbarian starts becoming more active in his craziness, leading to all kinds of horrible thing happening to children, regardless of race or circumstance. It wasn't completely out of nowhere, since he was nearly possessed by a demon who started off disguised as a child; it wasn't completely without merit, but even a paladin's patience and understanding can only go so far. Got to a point where the characters came to blows about it, concerning past and current dilemmas, leading to some great role playing, was still in good fun... and we ran into the surviving children from the orphanage in the beginning.

Bandit leader was back with a vengeance, so we decided to end this before he became a recurring bad guy. Killed him, saved the kids, was going to bring 'em to the next town over three days away. Well, I was nearly killed in the fight, so my paladin was unconscious from the blood loss (roleplaying again, passed out due to overexertion), but really it was a setup for me to duck out for an hour; some family business. Came back to hear that we had "taken care" of the children, and by that, I mean the barbarian traded the children to his tribe for better weapons and armor, since our party bumped into them as a random encounter. I was a little mad that he did that, not because he used them for bartering purposes, so much as he did it behind my back just because I'm LG, and he didn't want to hear my mouth about it, roleplaying or not. That's when the OOC fighting started, and he became a child-beating psycho just to spite me, in and out of character. He was forcibly changed to Chaotic Evil shortly after (level loss and all). I think the only reason the DM and party didn't stop us was because they didn't think it could get worse, so they were enjoying the show. Which leads us to the child drop-kicking... Even I had to admit was funny after the fact, but we had just gotten the bounties on our heads taken off so we could be in a civilized area again, and then he kills a beat-up kid with a natural 20 unarmed strike, which gets us wanted...again. Campaign fell apart two sessions after that due to our butting heads. I'm not saying either of us were right or wrong; could have been handled better on both sides. Just seems to be a running theme that kids don't do well in our campaigns, which is probably why they never show up anymore, thanks to the DM.

I've occasionally had players try to pull something like this, where they want to join the army or become blacksmiths or work as vets or what have you instead of adventuring. I usually let them. I've found that after spending a session or two sitting around watching everyone else play with an occasional "roll a d20. Okay, you earn two copper for forging horseshoes today" thrown their way, they find a way to bring their character motivations in line with a career that involves regularly going out on adventures.

And then there is me, with the actual rules on how to run a business from the DMG2 in 3.5 which included encounter tables involving bandits, disasters, competitors, wandering monsters, magical accidents, disguised bandits pretending to be wounded adventurers, and shapeshifted dragon patrons. I had more fun running my bar that week (I negotiated for an upgrade IC and had to deal with a rampaging rhino that escaped from the circus) than the party did on that dungeon run which was made when the DM decided to do a puzzle based dungeon with "easy ones". They got through three puzzles, eight rooms, one combat encounter that night. I got a combat encounter, NPC interaction, role-playing, and not having to figure out a logic math puzzle that it turns out the DM messed up on (discovered in hour two of that puzzle) and let you through to the next puzzle door. The DM didn't want to focus on me much so that I'd feel left out, but I spent my 'off' time grinding up my Pokemon Sapphire team to fight the elite four. I had a lot of fun.

Personally, I'd be willing to do something like that--and have, on occasion--but only if the player is willing to schedule a one-on-one session to rp their bar-running experience (or whatever). I have a strict "Your individual stuff can't result in the rest of the party sitting around listening to the two of us chat and roll dice for more than a couple of minutes at a stretch" policy, which I've found most players heartily approve of. Even the guys who <i>love</i> going off and doing their own thing usually recognize that everyone else can't be sitting on their hands indefinitely.

I have to say, you guys didn't make it easy for me - I got so many fantastic applications it was nigh-impossible to narrow it down to four. Finally though I bit the bullet and I'll be writing a letter to Celestia to tell her what I learned.

Possibly. However, as most of you already have your cutie-marks - I'm not sure the Unknown Ponies system fits as well as otherwise. I also don't understand it on the gameplay-level. I get the overall themes and what the mechanics are there for, but I'm having trouble figuring out the core stats and how they factor into things.

I definitely like the friendship track, that's a great concept and system.

I'm not sure if the encouraging of failure is going to lead to good gameplay though. I like empowering the players by rewarding creative problem-solving rather than their skill-checks, sure, but here the system seems to give incentives to failure. I like players knowing that if they work hard and come up with a great plan, they've got a great chance. I could apply heavy DM modifiers in response to good planning, but that negates the point of the system to begin with. Plus, it makes players kind of want to fail... Which might hurt their planning.

I feel like I'm missing something. I think I'll see if I can ask Erin herself. Or, if anyone's tried the system, it'd be great to hear from you too. You can email me at

From what I understand about the system, the Friendship Track is sort of a counterbalance to the high failure rate of rolls.

Essentially, you can uses your Generosity, Laughter, Honesty, Loyalty, and Kindness points to "purchase" successful events in each of the categories (more powerful with the more points you spend) without needing to roll the dice (with GM approval of course).

And you can push it even harder with the Magic track, by forcing a roll to improve itself, thus allowing you, if you have 2 magic points, guarantee a minimum of a successful roll, and more likely a critical success.

So it sorta creates this metagame of collecting points to guarantee you can't fail a roll in an environment where you normally fail rolls.

At least that's what I think Erin was intending.

That's a really good point. I liked the friendship tracks already, but I didn't factor in their counterbalance to the high-failure rolls. I guess the only worry would then be that the meta-game of collecting those points begins to consume the actual game.

Player 1: Okay, are we ready to go to the wedding guys?

Player 2: Sure! But first, I check to see if there are any kids on the streets.

DM: Sure, you can find some.

Player 2: Do any look sad?

DM: Um... One does off in a corner. A blue filly watching a group of others play hoof-scotch.

Player 3: Great! Let's go comfort her.

DM: Okay, what do you say?

Player 1: Um, the wedding sounds interesting - there might even be some danger to the princess.

Player 2: Yeah, so we better have our friendship points. We'll tell the kid, 'cheer up, just believe in yourself and you can be great'.

DM: Okay, that'll get you a friendship--

Player 3: Wait! Stop.

Player 1: Thank goodness...

Player 3: Will we get extra points if we do it in song?

Player 2: Yeah! Great idea!

DM: Well, I suppose...

Player 3: Actually, let's throw a party for the kid, the rules say that's worth about 3 points!

DM: You... Could do that

*laughs* Actually, a completely open-ended sandbox good deeds session sounds pretty fun. Just trying to figure out how to cheer people up and making friendship points the rewards instead of experience. I could definitely get behind that. If the meta-game becomes the main game that could be really fun. I might have to play around with that...

I can already see the players fighting each other over good deeds, terrorizing the NPCs with their ever-increasing friendship attempts and/or endangering the town with their over-the-top antics.

PC1: Do we have everything?

PC2: Yep! Ten pounds of explosives, 5000 bits worth of gem dust, fire-leaves, enchanted +15 cannon, portable holes, one of Discord's shapeshifting nail clippings, a tuft of Pinkie Pie's mane hair, 20 bits worth of parchment, one written document ensuring the royal presence of the Princess, and some sprinkles.

PC3: Make sure to fireproof everything as well. We can't risk it burning up in the atmosphere.

DM: ...All this for a party invitation?

Amazing. This is a party worthy of Pinkie Pie.

I talked to Erin, the wonderful and talented creator of the system, and she confirmed some of my concerns about the constant-failure getting frustrating and the game system being prone to tangents. However, she offered a lot of great suggestions on how to manage the chaos. I'll definitely be using some variation of her system, and I can promise something similar to the friendship track will be in place. I love that thing.

Kinda glad I didn't send in that application. I was hoping for a game where I play an adult dealing with a bunch of kids, but it sounds like everyone had that same idea.

I may just roll up a kid, just to shake it up a bit (and by shake it up, I mean actually attempt one of the game's intended main objectives).

Oh, I wasn't talking about using the Unknown Ponies system; I just meant that I have some legendarily bad dice rolls, second only only of my buddies who managed to get six natural 1's in a row (man, did we laugh at that, much to his chagrin).

Of course, failing can win too; for example, one of my favorite spectacular fails had me failing at a stealth roll while on the roof of a chapel. For one, it was a natural one, so it was an automatic fail, secondly, this was my second 4th edition attempt, and I was playing a Minotaur ranger, trying to stealth my way into the roof of a church where the main bad guy was hiding out. I realize how ridiculous it is for a Minotaur to try to stealth, but just go with it. Anyway, I not only failed at the stealth roll, but also the Athletics roll right before that, so I fell through the ceiling, crashing through to the basement, and based on the DM's percentile roll to figure out where I landed, I end up turning the main bad guy into a pancake, as well, as the two guys flanking him. Granted, the fall took me down to 1/4 HP, but it was worth it to hear the DM utter the phase, "Death by ass-crushing; that's a new one in my campaigns."

For a logo I'd suggest a d12 from the side (at the right angle you have 6 faces visible with those pentagon faced ones) and each of the mane six's cutie mark instead of each number. I suppose you could get away with using a D20 if you use... I was about to suggest the CMC's cutie marks but then remembered the obvious... if you use some other characters from the show that crop up. Then you just have "Friendship is Dragons" circling it like a coin.

From a serious, designer's point of view (no mad giggling in this comment) the logo is pretty poor, and the main reason is the typeface being used. The individual letters aren't that discernible, making it hard to read the logo as a whole, and stepping back from it you notice that the entire thing basically forms one big red block - so it's not that recognisable overall. The typeface sort of fits, in that it's from the medieval era and that's generally what D&D is stereotyped to be set in (and what the tech level of Equestria is apparently meant to be), but it's not used the way that kind of type was used at the time, either.

I had never noticed before that the Ponyville background is actually darker in this episode due to the smoke.
