Watching the episode in slow-motion, my favorite part of this scene has to be the split-second Cadance spends in panel 5 with her brow furrowed watching Twilight leave. Then Shining looks at her and she's instantly all smiles. Yes, it's "acting loudly" for the people in the back, but there's a simple joy in rewatching something with a twist and watching the performance remain consistent in its second context.

Aye, Cadance's performance is really good visually. That's the one thing I do miss a bit with the online games I play-- no visuals to read on people's faces. I have to concentrate on voice inflection to pick up moods.

Twi makes a smart decision here. Its probably not the decision most of my characters would have made, but my characters also aren't always the best at making wise decisions.

My party has a tendency to prematurely Aggro antagonists while the party is split up, unprepared, and often with half their spells spent...

And still manage to score a victory by pulling out if there ass... For example, in a impromptu 1v1 with Queen Chrysalis, they'd probably find a way to drop the ceiling on her, or something...

For reasons I will not elaborate on at this time, they are forever banned from Horns of Blasting.

Enchantments that affect how PCs act can be tricky. There can be a lot of fun in having an excuse to turn on your friends for a while, or in pushing your comfort zone with some change to your usual characterization. It can also be an interesting challenge to be given some restrictions you have to try to work around. On the other hand, push it too far and you can alienate the players/characters from each other and lose the heart of the game.

Stories about using enchantments/compuslsion in-game that worked out well?

Oh, I've come to suspect several of my players just *hate* compulsions. They seem to hate them so much that a minor mook can become the target of their most powerful spells if it ever lands a compulsion on them... Because that's exactly what happened. It became an easy shortcut to get them very invested in twhat was going on. It did backfire a little though, when they had to fight the "final boss" of the campaign and they had used up a copule high-level slots.

However, I've not made successful use of compulsion spells since, so I have yet to discover if they were only "playing their characters' personalities" or if they would react like that every time.

In my own experience, having been at at the table for at least one pickup game where someone pulled the “use my psychic powers to compel this NPC to hook up with me” thing, to the extent that the GM had to shut it down, I’m starting to think compulsions open a very dangerous can of consent-related worms, and I would only use them at a table that had drawn explicit boundaries for them and had safety tools ready to go.

That’s just me, though. Pre-emptive apologies for any judgemental tone here.

Compulsion magic is a tricky thing to do on PCs, because it robs them of agency. Either they buy into what you want them to do (in which case, TALK TO THEN FIRST AND GET THEM ON BOARD) or they're left completely divorced from the story and game for the length of time their character is under someone else's control. Or even longer than that. What's the point in investing yourself in a character if it can be easily taken over and be made to do things you wouldn't do?

That's why I never used compulsion as any more than a short-term combat trick. Unless it's very much a pre-approved plot device (and even then I'd try to leave it vague and let the player fill in the details), never more than a couple combat rounds of complication.

Hah! I don't know about 'well', but had an experience with Enchantment- in a one-shot, the party barbarian got Charmed or Dominated or something by a big bad Demon boss- my character, a vehemently anti-demon Deepwarden, decided to knock him out of it with a throwing-axe to the face. She then proceeded to miss ALL 4 SHOTS with her throwing axes. It was hilariously terrible.

I despise any sort of direct mind-control, but as a responsible player, that means I always buff my resistance to that sort of thing regardless of what class I'm playing. The fun stories to come out of that were when my barbarian was in a party with an arcanist, a witch, and a paladin, all of whom have nominally high will saves from their class. I forget who the enemy was now, but we were all subjected to an AoE mind-altering spell. Everyone failed their saves except me.

Out-of-character it was fun to reveal that my will save was the best in the party by a significant margin. In-character it was fun to free my associates by smashing the flimsy mental-powers enemy with my polearm.

It really is the smart move for someone who doesn't have Rarity-level bluff skills (on paper or OOC). By immediately going to share what she saw with the rest of the party, she gives them the IC knowledge to be extra wary of anybody acting suspiciously out of character, and to be prepared against mental attacks.

Had she stayed, best case scenario is that she successfully pretends that everything is okay. But if something goes wrong and she gives "Cadance" a clue that she's caught on, then she's stuck in the room with both the powerful brainwasher and her mind-controlled force-field-weilding brother.

Seriously, for all you people complaining about mind control and compulsion in MLP need to realize just how common it is.

Never mind Starlight being evil, or even being reformed. Heck, she had a magical hypnosis in one of the shorts, we've had mind altering potions, even Zecora could be accused of abusing the minds of those who trusted her (Fluttershy and Angel.)

That’s a valid point. If I may reply, what works in a show doesn’t necessarily work in a more interactive medium. In a show, it happens to the characters, but in a game it happens to you. In a game, this should only ever happen if you’ve given permission, that’s all. I don’t think anyone was complaining about mind control in the series itself, they were sharing experiences about dealing with it in their games.

Going slightly off-topic but coming off the comment about a performance remaining consistent in its second context - this is one of the (few) problems with Frozen. Hans' actions and behaviour through most of the movie don't make sense with the twist - hence why there are so many theories that Hans himself was influenced by compulsion magic offscreen sometime after the confrontation at Elsa's tower.

I really like Film Theory's take on the thing. The rock trolls are shown to have memory altering abilities, and in the live show on ABC we saw what they could do. So basically, they alter the memories and feelings of Hans, and that guy who was courting Anna, and bam! Their guy becomes the princess' husband instead of that other guy. And then in Frozen 2, Bam! Now their guy is the full ... is it "King-Consort"? What's the proper title for the husband of the ruling Queen?

The common choice is "Prince-Consort", but you don't use it if you are a prince in your own right as that is a higher title, (e.g. Prince Philip is the Prince-Consort of Canada, the UK, Australia, etc. but he is also the Prince of Greece and Denmark¹).

You can't have a King-Consort because being a king means you owe fealty to no mortal, (although you might owe it to a god).

1: And as such he is in the line of succession for the British throne, although very far behind his children, (he's something like 600 steps down the list, a personal union with both Norway and Monaco would happen first).

Instead of fighting alone, is better to retreat and find the allies... Is not that she can't take the enemy alone and take all the sweet exp for herself of course.
