I hate awkwardness and misunderstandings and cringe-inducing anxiety in drama. Which makes this scene hard to rewatch and parody, lemme tell ya.

Got another session of The Forgotten Ones up today! It has a change of scenery, shopping, and hunting down kidnappers!

It doesn't look right having those last three panels all crammed together in such a small space. The impact of Tara's OOC statement doesn't really land well when the reaction of the other PCs is just squeezed into a tiny space like that.
I know it's technically double-length comic, but in this case, I feel like it would be better to make the comic a little taller than double-length so that those last two panels especially have room to breathe.

Are you suggesting... Triple-length?! :O
Newbiespud 15th Sep 2020, 10:12 AM edit delete reply
That's a bit larger of an impact than I'd like for this scene.

The image height is already over 1,000 (pixels)! That's 1/9th of a meme.

(Technically it's over 1,500 and thus 1/6th.)

To be fair, Twi and the player behind probably _do_ feel a bit small right now.

I normally don't like cringe scenes, but I'm inconsistent. Celestia's bad acting and Twilight's anxious cover in Horse Play for example I find hilarious. Oddly enough here, never bothered me. Maybe it's Twilight's expressions and accusations are so over the top I can't help find it funny.

Also, huh, I never noticed Chrysalis/Cadance's little blush there.

Part of me thinks that Twilight (well, this comic version of her, at least) is making the right play with the solo accusation. It's a huge risk, but due to her relationship with both bride and groom (which the rest of the Mane Cast lacks), they can't simply get replace her like they did with the old bridesmaids without it being incredibly suspicious.

Actually seeing it all play out, though? It's hard not to feel sorry for all parties involved.

Welp, looks like the drama cake just gained another layer.

This whole arc feels to me like it's been set up as a deliberate contrast to the Discord arc. Where D!DM was constantly using OOC manipulation and dynamics as a weapon against the players, Cadence and Lauren have been very careful in this arc to draw a line between IC and OOC, to keep the drama in the game. Not sure if that was on purpose, but it's definitely the feel I get.

Cadance was voiced by Britt McKillip, Chrysalis by Kathleen Barr. Y'know, in case you want to keep the player-naming motif going.

It's almost a bit *too* deliberate. So far this arc has been somewhat hard for me to read because everything feels so much more forced and less organic. I understand where the author is coming from, though with Discord the emotions of betrayal and frustration felt organic.

Contrasting this here, because everyone is in on every ounce of IC vs OoC knowledge, the IRL drama that Twi is getting really doesn't seem to feel that way, just more bits to the scripted drama. The most organic stuff is rather the one-liners that others have been putting in, but Twilight really doesn't seem to be making much side commentary that would suggest this isn't all just pre-planned drama.

I get the feeling a fair bit would require verbal tone and body language, too. And if others are picking up on it, that's great. I am not sure exactly why, but I really haven't been able to pick up a vibe that Twi and this marriage really bother her at all, given how the party seems relatively oblivious to what would be a parallel to the DiscorDM arc.

Maybe it's just that, how little tension and questioning the rest of the party has towards this guest GM situation that is supposed to be about manipulation, or just the near perfectly-planned counterpoint rebuttals.

Either way, I do look forward to the next page, and the rest of the story. Maybe the second half will change my mind.

Dash's "I don't!" interjection is easily my favorite part of this page.

But she's still a trusted friend. She doesn't get to object so simply to that part, as the decision to trust her isn't hers. (She could influence the decision easily, sure, but she doesn't make it herself.)
Space Jawa 15th Sep 2020, 3:21 PM edit delete reply
As I read it, it's not about whether she's a trusted friend or not; the joke is that she doesn't actually care.
albedoequals1 15th Sep 2020, 9:28 PM edit delete reply
Totally agree about the "I don't" being great. It's also helpful for keeping the IC stuff distinct from the OOC stuff. Dash is just here for the fighting, hehe

Oof, here we go. Take your time, Tara, let it all out. Let's clear the air so we can all enjoy the roleplay.
ChaosStar0 16th Sep 2020, 8:17 AM edit delete reply
Same. That's why I never rewatch this episode. And why I'm stuck in the middle of Season 5, for the last 2 years, a lot of those coming up from the episode descriptions.

Use the fast-forward button liberally. There's a lot of moments to enjoy in the remaining seasons and you probably know the characters/creators enough to get the gist of an awkward drama scene without sitting through it.

The only thing missing from Rainbow's "I don't!" interjection, much like "It's only a model", is someone hissing, "Shh!" afterwards.

However, since this comic has already done "It's only a model", probably best to avoid yet another callback to years and years ago. :)
