When players both know how to keep IC and OOC apart, *and* can get into a character, it can make for the kind of intense moments that many players specifically look for.

It can also weird out those who aren't in for that sorta thing! So as with any other social thing, handle with tact.

In this like these, who could know more? a Arch Mage with years studying many magics or a simple mage that specialize is shield magic. Surely it should be obvious.

Not necessarily. Depends on what exactly Shining Armor is - I don't recall if it's been spelled out here, but I've always had something of a paladin-y vibe to him (better yet might be a Guardian from Guild Wars 2 for anyone familiar with that). Someone who specialises in protective magic might well know healing magic better than your average arcane spellcaster.

Now, in THIS case we know Twilight is right... but it's not just as simple as archmage versus whatever SA is.

On the other hand, the archmage probably DOES know mind control better than SA.

Dagger of Cure Light Wounds
1d4 damage, followed by 1d8 points of healing

Heavy Mace of Cure Moderate Wounds
1d8 damage, followed by 2d8 points of healing

Dwarven Longaxe of Cure Serious Wounds
1d12 damage, followed by 3d8 points of healing

It might kill you, it might also save your life

There's a magic item in 3.5 which essentially does this. It's a set of bracers which activates as a swift action to deliver a Cure Moderate Wounds with your next attack.

The fluff indicates it was made for finding undead that were hiding among the living. If you're wrong, you heal the damage you just inflicted on an innocent. If you're right, EXTRA DAMAGE.

My character used it to heal people by kicking them. Fit fairly well as military officer. "GET UP AND GET BACK INTO THE FIGHT, SOLDIER!" *boot with Cure Moderate Wounds attached*

Heal Wound (if the caster is a follower of Humakt) -- from a sidebar in the rulebook:

Heal Wound is the most powerful healing magic available to most adventurers. For 1 Rune point, an adventurer can heal as many hit points of damage as they spend magic points on.
Each cult’s version of Heal Wound is subtly different.
For some examples, Humakt’s Heal Wound uses Death or Truth to mortify the wounded flesh so that the injury can be denied or ignored. It always leaves painful scarring. Ernalda’s Heal Wound uses Fertility or Harmony to knit the wounded flesh back together without scarring or pain. Orlanth’s Heal Wound uses Air to bring enough breath to the victim that it simply overpowers the wound.

Supers game: GURPS supers.

One party member had a Heal that was effectively powered by physical Damage. Basically, for every point of normal physical damage she took, she could Heal someone for that many points. She also had a very mild regeneration of her own, so she almost never used it to heal the damage she just took.

So pretty much it was - "tank needs a big heal! martial artist - hit the healer!" in big fights. Worked GREAT - until the one time the martial artist was too busy to get to her - so the party ninja with the magical sword attacked her instead...

Only to discover to his horror that the sword did "magical energy" damage - which she couldn't absorb at all...

OOPS! That one move turned the fight from "manageable" to "near party wipe" - as the healer went down, the tank followed suit, and the martial artist then got dogpiled...

Lessons were learned...

Yeah - the masochistic healer was unsung hero of the party and a running joke for the entire campaign.

Playing in Pathfinder Second Edition. During a few campaign sessions we had an NPC who is a Cleric of Zon-Kuthon, whom we were escorting to a town we also wanted to reach.

My Fighter is so far the only one to experience that Cleric's healing spells. Because he is a follower of Zon-Kuthon- look him up if you need to, LOVELY fellow- our DM described the sensation as it feeling like my wounds were being forcefully stitched and stapled shut.

Needless to say, my Fighter did NOT enjoy it.

Thanks for this arc, Newbie. Between the discord arc and this arc, you've really highlighted how in character conflict can be either painful or fun depending on how its handled out of character. The contrast to this part compared to the previous part is fantastic.

I think my favorite moment for fake IC drama were both when both characters were played by the same person...and they were planned...
Played by my brother, which led to an epic race...that I as GM pre-planned cause I was warned. It was racing at sonic speeds through The Mirror Plane (why both were played by my brother - his character's evil double), while destroying all the mirrors, spilling their contents and mixing the planes together. It ended in the positive and negative energy planes cancelling eachother out in a massive explosion, and then the plane of earth blocking the path so the characters had a moment of peace and could settle things with talking.

My least favorite in-game drama stuff were due to stuff OOC and went poorly. One was due to two players breaking up, and the one who wanted the breakup betrayed the entire party. ...It was especially bad cause the other player just had been orphaned...and was not doing so well emotionally without the extra stuff.
