Haaaapeeeee birthdaaaaaaay!
Destrustor 14th Aug 2012, 6:05 AM edit delete reply
Happy birthday!

Edit: Ewww I just noticed that in the 8th panel one of Rarity's eyelashes sprouts from THE EYE ITSELF! Gah!

Cursed screencap comic making me notice gross details no one would ever see otherwise...

Love the look on his face when Rarity rolls the four. Happy birthday.
Digo 14th Aug 2012, 6:11 AM edit delete reply
"Just what I needed. More Ponies."

You can never have enough!! :D
Ah I love it when a player executes a well thought out plan complete with a BRILLIANT monologue to go with it... and their die rolls crup.

The most notable was a Final Boss fight where my wife revealed to both the BBEG AND the party she was secretly working for the Queen of this one kingdom and was tasked to kill the one evil-aligned character in the party. The reveal was beautiful because everyone went: O_O

And then she rolled a 1 on the attack.

Hmm...stealing treasure...without killing the monster first?

It's almost crazy enough to work.
Zuche 14th Aug 2012, 6:23 AM edit delete reply
Ah, the rule of three, where the third time is most definitely not the charm monster.
Digo 14th Aug 2012, 7:13 AM edit delete reply
Haha... good one! :D
Ranubis 14th Aug 2012, 6:42 AM edit delete reply
Why is it that thieves never seem to know when to quit? Our group had this one warlock character who seemed to spend every other turn trying to pickpocket my paladin. And then he'd cry 'profiling' when I was suspicious of the Warlock Tiefling who was constantly acting suspicious around me and my bags. -_-
Innisa 14th Aug 2012, 7:00 AM edit delete reply
I know right? We never do. I played a gnome thief before who didn't know where to quit. I took a flaw in kleptomania that gave me a boost in my thievery checks (house rules). I somehow managed to walk away with a diamond chandalier, two priceless paintings, and the gold statue from the center of town... I still don't know how I got away with it...
Cliff Snowpeak 14th Aug 2012, 11:56 PM edit delete reply
My current campaign has *two* thieves who don't know when to quit. One's a werewolf rogue with ridiculous thieving skills; the other is a trickster gnome illusionist. Half of the time in our first few sessions involved the two of them trying to out-steal each other. Eventually, they had to call a truce in and out of character, since they were constantly picking each others' pockets.
Cain 15th Aug 2012, 1:34 PM edit delete reply
I remember him. He was fun to play with.
Colin 14th Aug 2012, 6:47 AM edit delete reply
That diamond ring changed to a ruby ring. What are the odds? :-P
Ranubis 14th Aug 2012, 6:54 AM edit delete reply
Eh, rubies are worth more than diamonds, I guess Rarity decided to go for the more profitable loot.

Although she'll probably want it back for the Raise Dead diamond cost after the dragon catches up with them.
T 15th Aug 2012, 12:02 AM edit delete reply
Out of all colored diamonds, red diamonds are the rarest.
Digo 14th Aug 2012, 6:55 AM edit delete reply
Maybe it was a mood diamond that went from shiny confidence to red embarracement?
Innisa 14th Aug 2012, 6:57 AM edit delete reply
I think the red is more of a terror that "I'm about to be eaten by a dragon" color.
CharginChuck 14th Aug 2012, 7:03 AM edit delete reply
Or maybe it was just an animation error.

Yes, I'm going to be that guy.

She was caught... red-handed.

Raxon 14th Aug 2012, 9:05 AM edit delete reply
Lots of gems have hidden colors that only become noticeable or apparent only under certain conditions. For example, tanzanite is blue from one angle, and purple from another. Tourmaline is another, though the exact color varies, as the gem comes in a very large variety of natural colors.

Others change color based on the light. Alexandrite, as an example, appears green in natural sunlight, and reddish-purple under incandescent light. Fluorite glows under a black light.

Clearly, as Rarity went closer to the entrance to the cave, the gem on the ring was exposed to more light, and thus gave off a different color.

An important thing to know is that gems that change color, especially sapphires and other jewelry quality gems, are worth quite a bit more than any non-color changing varieties. Obviously, Rarity really knows her stuff.

This link gives you some basic information. for your information, I have provided links with more detailed information below for your convenience.

Alexantrite Effect: Changing color under different types of light.
Usambara Effect: Change in color when viewed at a certain angle.
Pleochroism: Changing color based when viewed through a polarized filter.
Thermochromism: Changing color based on heat applied. ...Yes, like a mood ring.
Tenebrescence: Changing Color based on exposure to sunlight.
CharginChuck 14th Aug 2012, 9:07 AM edit delete reply
...And knowing is half the battle.
Umiyuri Papaeyra 14th Aug 2012, 11:00 AM edit delete reply
Umiyuri Papaeyra
Ah, Alexandrite. One of my favourite gems. :>

I find it interesting how everybody points out the diamond-to-ruby ring and misses that all of the jewellery changes.
Digo 14th Aug 2012, 11:37 AM edit delete reply
Everyone is uh... pacing themselves. Yeah. :)
Destrustor 14th Aug 2012, 12:56 PM edit delete reply
Not to mention how the gem changes SIZE.
Explain THAT, Raxon! :)
Raxon 14th Aug 2012, 3:18 PM edit delete reply
Well, I thought for sure you'd be old enough to know this by now, but if you insist...

You see, when a woman loves her ring very much, she'll buy a very special cloth. She then polishes the ring to make it shine. This makes the ring happy, and it can get... excited... and its gems can change size and rating on the mohs scale. This is a temporary change, and it will go back to normal when the moment has passed. It's completely normal for a ring his age.

Now, it is of the utmost importance that when you always wear gloves when you polish a ring and wear it. If you don't, it could become gold-filled, and then, sometime soon down the road, you'll have a bunch of pinkie rings to care for. Always wear gloves when you polish your jewelry. You should also wear gloves when you wear your ring, unless you're absolutely certain you're ready.

I would have thought you'd know better than to give me such an open question by now.
The Guest 15th Aug 2012, 7:07 AM edit delete reply
Well, now I'm curious about women that prefer other types of jewellery...

This is freaking beautiful. Best comic yet? Quite possibly.

And happy birthday, by the way.
Lyntermas 14th Aug 2012, 7:15 AM edit delete reply
My favorite pics were Dragon's sheepish smile in panel 4, Applejack's look of sheer anguish in panel 9, and Dragon's look of realization in panel 12.

And happy birthday's eve to you, Newbiespud.

Aaaaand Rarity wins the "Least Genre Savvy" and "Lowest Out-of-Character Wisdom Score" awards for the comic.

This is as bad as when one of my players told a black dragon that as a show of good faith he could have the dragon's hoard of coins melted down into a statue of said dragon. (He got a permanent -6 to Diplomacy rolls against black dragons, to reflect his character's ignorance and lack of dragon-related social skills.)
Digo 14th Aug 2012, 9:10 AM edit delete reply
LOL, wow, that's pretty bad. Did he have a bridge to sell the dragon too? ;)

I thought she would have waited until he left to steal the treasure...Oh well.
Lyntermas 14th Aug 2012, 10:32 AM edit delete reply
I'm guessing the dragon would take his hoard with him...somehow.
Digo 14th Aug 2012, 11:39 AM edit delete reply
My daughter pointed out that in "A Dog and Pony Show", Spike shows that he has pockets when he pulls out the gem Rarity gave to him.
Maybe these are all... Pocket Dragons?

A long, long time ago, I decided to write some epic length alt-scripts for some of the episodes. Brony is Magic requested that I do one based off of Sisterhooves Social. Around that time, I got sidetracked with my senior project and stopped for a while.

But now, with no further ado, here is the Sisterhooves Social alt-script. .

It only covers the first part of the episode, but it's rather long as it is. I might make a continuation of it later, but I'm making no promises.
Let me know what you guys think.
Ranubis 14th Aug 2012, 2:45 PM edit delete reply
Woohoo! Awesome alt-script, great job showing SB just trying to play a game with her sister. And really, what else could the DM have done?
redwings1340 14th Aug 2012, 5:29 PM edit delete reply
You should create a spinoff webcomic where they play the episodes Newbie is never going to get to. I know I'd read it, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's enjoyed your alternate scripts.
Lyntermas 14th Aug 2012, 5:55 PM edit delete reply
Thanks for the feedback, guys. Part of the challenge was making sure the GM didn't come off as a jerk by ruining Rarity's stuff (as well as allowing SB to do things that would mess up Rarity's stuff). As for a spin-off comic, I don't think that's gonna work. My inspiration tends to come in short bursts, rather than as a continuous story. Also, writing for a comic requires different styles (every comic needs a punchline, etc.). That's not even going into the time required to screencap all the shots required. No, I think I'll leave the comic-making to Newbiespud and stick to the comments section.

Although, if someone wanted to use one of my alt-scripts for a guest comic...
Zuche 14th Aug 2012, 8:08 PM edit delete reply
That was a wonderful burst of inspiration. If I may be so selfish, I hope it won't end there.

For those of you interested, the battle with the changling is underway. So far he has summoned a dragon. No one died yet.
Guest 14th Aug 2012, 2:30 PM edit delete reply
This is Boden King by the way.
Lyntermas 14th Aug 2012, 3:13 PM edit delete reply
The reality-altering changeling can summon a DRAGON? Well, based on my knowledge of Narrative Balance, this means that either it's getting power from something else, it's a wizard who will go down in one hit (if you can get to it), or it's not "just a changeling". Good luck.
Guest 14th Aug 2012, 4:36 PM edit delete reply
It was an illusion and we got rid of it by ghost sounding a dragon In heat nearby and bluffing him away. The changeling we beat by surrounding him and beating him to death.
Zeeth 15th Aug 2012, 7:54 AM edit delete reply
But when have you heard a dragon in heat?

Happy Birthday Newbiespud! You've made my life a bit more awesome in the past year, and I've had a lot of fun reading this comic. I also like how you've organized your comment sections to be the best comment sections on the internet. Admittedly there aren't all that many great comment sections on the internet, but this is one of them, with so many amazing stories that I never would have heard otherwise.

Thank you and happy birthday!

A situation like this was what made me realise WHY adventuring parties prefer to fight rather than talk.
1) A situation where you are doing something not entirely legal, but you don't have to fight over it.
1a. However you know that you could just fight your way through.
2) You decide to talk it out.
3)The initial rp goes well and you start to have fun finally rping. The dice while not rolling well, are at least moderate enough to allow this continue.
4) Then you roll the 4, or in my case the 1.
5)and the fight you were trying to avoid starts anyway.
6) Now the player goes, this took twenty minutes,I got nowhere in the adventure, I had to roll a dozen dice rolls, and after all that the fight still started. Next time, I'm just skipping to the start the fight bit.
