So I've got one day of Everfree Northwest under my belt. It was kinda bumpy at first, and more than half the con is irrelevant to me because I don't have any cash to spare on dealer's items and autographs...

But I'm still having a good time regardless. There's plenty of interesting panels and side activities - plus just being in the presence of hundreds of bronies - to keep me busy and entertained this weekend.

Today, Saturday, is probably the busiest day of the weekend. This should be interesting!

I wasn't expecting an update while you were away, so this is a pleasant surprise.

I love how anticlimactic this encounter was. Twilight tries diplomacy and fails to garner interest. Rarity tries persuasion and is eventually done in by a greedy streak that just doesn't know when to quit. Pinkie tries humour and is shot down instantly off screen.

As amusing as that was, the player's reaction is amusingly understated as well. She's so confident she had it figured out that the instant failure of her plan had to be the dragon's responsibility. She's like a pink, party-mongering version of the Sicilian.

PP: Haha! You silly dragon! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "don't wash your colors with your whites" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go against Pinkie Pie when laughter is on the line"! Hahahahaha!

But yes, the game seems to do quite well on the horror aspect. Slenderman himself is quite the eldritch terror in roughly humanoid form.

Yep, that's how he got me, too. I'd seen him a few times and run away. A couple times, I'd been walking through the forest when all of a sudden the screen got all staticky, and I just ran until I felt I was safe. But when he finally got me? Bam! No warning whatsoever. Apparently he just appeared right behind me and grabbed me. I think I had 5 notes, but I forget the exact number.

The problem with horror games, and why that's kind of an oxymoron, is that good horror relies on being unpredictable, whereas particularly computer games must follow strict logic. Jump scares might initially frighten us, but that wears off quickly, and we eventually train ourselves to just shoot the monster in the face when it tries that. (For example, the Flood from Halo were kind of scary to me at first, on account of being suicidally aggressive, incredibly tough, and downright creepy, and also I was fourteen at the time, but before too long, instead of cowering in a doorway working up the courage to run through the next room, I was running and gunning like it was nothing.) Real horror is about exploiting the fear of the unknown. Not only is the monster trying to kill you, but it has no discernible motivation, no predictable method of attack, and you can't even get a clear look at the thing! The Slenderman mythos in general meets all these criterion while also adding the unsettling Uncanny Valley effect.

Oh, I've got a funny story from F.E.A.R. I don't play it but my brother does and....when he get's scared, he shoots like mad.

At the point where you first had to fight those invisible enemies, he had managed to kill two of them but the third one was being particularly smart and staying away. He gets to this corner and turns around to make sure the enemy is coming up behind him.
BOOM! Screen full of the enemies face!
I screamed at the same time he got a head shot.
And this was when he wasn't cheating.

Okay, I've set up a PBP thread at PonyTales for the Zilean's Revenge campaign.

The only person who I don't know has an account is Kris_The_Guest, but signing up is easy. The main question remaining is if should I set up an OOC thread as well (I've seen the other Ponytales campaigns have one, but we've been doing fine so far without separating into different threads).

Up for discussion, I guess. On the one hand, we wouldn't have to worry about putting everything in Italics to differentiate.

Some plans are doomed to fail from the start. XD

I remember a particular Shadowrun adventure I took part in-- The mission was to infiltrate a warehouse and steal some data chips. Easily done... except while I was expecting to do this with stealth, everyone else did it with guns blazing. XD

At one point the team streetsam used a forklift to bust through a garage door and then our hacker accidently called the cops when he wanted to know "what does this blinking star icon do?"

In the end the cops showed up and we got plastered all over the walls. At least we ran up one hell of a cleanup bill.

Always include the following step in your plans:
Step X: Fail miserably.

That way if your overall plan works, that's great. But if you do fail miserably at least you can die while sincerely screaming "It's all going exactly as we planned! MWAHAHAHAHAH!" just to creep out the guys who kill you.
Full-proof plan right there if you ask me.

First, you allow a moment of dead silence. Then you break that with an insane giggle that gradually turns to maniacal laughter. After a shorter pause, you openly admit The Secret, regardless of what it is. Then you declare yourself God. At this point, it's not about winning or losing, living or dying, it's about making sure whoever walks away has nightmares for the rest of their life.

I have a laugh I call my evil giggle. It starts out as a high pitched, childish giggle, and transitions into a killer baritone evil laugh. It scares people. Let loose the laugh, and ask them if they know what happens when you're killed.

It's a heck of a bluff.

Just curious, but has anyone ever actually had a party that took turns using different approaches like they did in this episode?

I'm trying to think if I have any good examples from my campaigns... and I can't think of any at the moment. Usually we just kind of know what to do or we get lucky - though there was this one time...

We were in an Indiana-Jones like scenario where this boulder kept rolling down a path and resetting itself. We had to get on the path, then use dexterity checks to squeeze up against the walls and wait for the boulder to pass us before progressing further and further.

We had basically a rogue, a paladin (me), a barbarian, and a druid in the party.

Well, me and the barbarian, having not ever encountered anything we couldn't solve by applying enough force, got the great idea to try and hold the boulder back while advancing forward at a steady clip (our strengths were crazy in this game, so we thought we could do this).

Well, we tell the rogue and druid to stand back, then we go at it, trying to hold back the boulder. We quickly realized however that said boulder was going to crush us if we didn't let go and get out of the way in a hurry.

Being the undexterous muscle-men that we were, we then ended up having to sit and wait for the druid and rogue to get past the trap and unarm it.

We still enjoyed this segment however, as we contented ourselves by humming the Indiana-Jones theme while the others ducked, weaved, and raced for the exit.

Maybe I've just ran with defective players, but in my experience most parties have a few players (two most commonly, but sometimes three or maybe even just one) who are the go-to guys when it comes to formulating plans to overcome obstacles; these same players usually handle the diplomacy aspects of the game as well, regardless of their characters' actual diplomacy score.

On the one hand, having everyone do their own thing without regard to each others' strategy is a very poor way to coordinate a team. You're supposed to work together and use your collective strengths to accomplish what none of you would be able to even think of doing alone. It is this sort of "teamwork" that leads to defeat in ANY team-based competitive online multiplayer, whether it is an RTS, FPS, or RPG.

On the other hand, most RPG parties tend to suffer from crippling overspecialization: there really is only one person that should be attempting any one task that's not combat. Generally, each party will only have one diplomancer (if they're even that lucky), one trapfinder/disarmer, one magic specialist, one scholar, one heavy lifter, one herbalist/animal handler, one engineer, one theologian, etc. You could make a plan that would use all of these different roles working together in some way, but the complexity of such a plan might lead to its undoing. The end result is, unless you're trying to kill something, it usually IS best to just stand back and let the expert handle it. But for goodness sake, at least talk over your plans with everyone first.

What might make a session more interesting would be to set up a scenario that requires at least two characters to be attempting the same or similar task simultaneously, like a machine that requires two operators. Only have one skilled machinist? Like I said, interesting. Your entire party minus one character shouldn't be sacrificing the ability to perform some trivial task just to get a few bonus points.
