Boy, this scenario just gets darker and darker the more you examine it, huh?

I can't believe that Discord has yet to realize he's scheduled for a knife in the back sooner or later.

Well his player on skimmed the equivalent MM. Twilight’s player asked about him and rolled the check. The entire table was probably informed by Twilight that a backstabbing is very likely to happen. The fun part is that Discord’s player didn’t do his homework and thinks his broken character can handle it not realizing that the CR is rapidly not going to be in his favor.

Winged Cat
He probably knows, and is counting on it.

My thought is that he's expecting the dramatic betrayal, the others will beat Tirek, and then he'll get the final showdown after he gets his magic back. Remember, he knows he's playing the bad guy, and knows that the heroes will win (dice permitting). But considering what happens in the episodes? I don't know if he's going back to stone, or maybe jump to the redemption arc right away...

My personal theory is that there will be a betrayal, but it's not the betrayal that Discord *thinks* is coming. Discord believes he knows what everyone's planning, but the DM (via Tirek) is going to surprise him.

I can't help but notice that Discord's plan doesn't seem to have a viable next step to it. What exactly is DiscordDM planning to do after Tirek steals all the ponies' magic? Tirek is working for Discord only under the threat of Discord turning him into the authorities if he doesn't, but that threat obviously won't hold water _after_ Tirek has stolen everypony's magic. Discord also doesn't seem to have considered the possibility of Tirek becoming powerful enough to steal HIS magic (what happened in the show). He is also operating under the dubious assumption that if he defeats the PCs, somehow his slow petrification would stop.

Alerertnatively, assuming Tirek has the ability to utilize his stolen magic to reverse Discord's petrification himself, Discord would have to convince a villain, who explicitly doesn't believe in trusting others, to willingly use that power to halt the petrification, of the annoying chaos god who has *threatened* him into working together, when it would be all too easy for Tirek to just, well, not, and simply LET Discord get turned to stone. Tirek won't just give the magic he's stolen to Discord, And if Discord actually had the ability to _steal_ their magic back from Tirec himself, he would not have needed to force Tirek to steal everypony's magic for him in the first place!

On a side note, I am amused that DiscordDM never once even considered the simple solution of simply going back and _asking_ the PCs to halt the petrification. (not that that would have been easy to convince them, but it isn't as if the PCs have been particularly unreasonable thus far, right?)

Now I'm wondering if Discord is planning on letting Tirek steal his magic - and letting Tirek steal the *petrification* at the same time, leaving him free to run away and come back another day.

That's also what I was thinking. Letting Tirek get powerful enough to steal the magic from him, including the harmful magic, and then counting on the heroes to do what heroes do, ultimately leaving him free to scarper with his flesh intact and power restored.

It would be amusing if Tirek can selectively choose which magic to steal. This, Discord gets depowered AND still turns to stone. :3
aylatrigger 13th Jul 2022, 9:04 PM edit delete reply
Ah, but that doesn't account for Discord's chaos magic, which could 'confuse' his magic stealing. Maybe he would only get the petrification...

Something that many GMs have learned when making villains is that too 'perfect' a plan never works. But even so, I always try to leave little flaws in most of antagonists plans (usually due to a good plan having to deal with minions overlooking a detail that the villain wouldn't - red tape is a great flaw-creator).

However, something I'm kind of curious about is even though we could say that the heroes will win because it makes sense, and the game wouldn't end, what happens if the rolls panned out so badly they *do* lose? Sure, there's that alternate universe scene out there, but would discord find it fun to win by literally derailing everything? I wouldn't think so, but it will be interesting to see what happens, even if a TPK isn't likely to be in the cards.

I like making 'ideal' villains and seeing what the party comes up with. It is fun, but occasionally have to weaken the villains midway through if the party decides to just brute-force it...

I do sort of like G4 Tirek's motive coming down to "Get swole," with implied daddy issues through the comics. Like he can be very clever and knowledgeable but at the end of the day he's sort of a big dudebro. Whereas G1 Tirac seems to have wanted to turn Dream Valley into the setting to a heavy metal music video.
RuBoo 12th Jul 2022, 7:30 AM edit delete reply
…Which would probably have been fine if he just wanted to make a heavy metal music video. Right? Don’t know much about heavy metal or music videos…

During Starlight Glimmer's time travel scheme in the show, they briefly showed an alternate timeline where Tirec succeeded. This amounted to Giant!Tirek stomping around and shooting giant lasers of destruction everywhere for no apparent reason other than that he could. Some 'god' he turned out to be.

IIRC Tirek once expressed that the ponies' magic rightfuly belonged to him (but not _Why_ he believed this to be so.) I always got the impression that he had no real endgame after operation 'steal everypony's magic'

A classic case of wanting power, but having no clear idea of what to do with it once you have it.

I’m guessing the ponies were only ever fuel. Once he got tired of playing kaiju with Equestria he probably planned to go back home and take revenge on his brother or Vorak whoever was in charge of his old kingdom.

So a all powerful being is in the processing of creation... well only want to now what DN-discord is planning for the certain betrayal....
