DM: As the sun approaches high noon, Tirek says that he feels strong enough to defeat the Princesses. How do you decide to tackle Canterlot?
Discord GM: For starters, I think I'll distract the royal guards with some random chaos.
DM: That tracks.
Discord GM: While all the attention is on me, I'll have already teleported Tirek straight to the throne room.
DM: Distraction and blitz, got it. Tirek does have one small request to tweak your plan.
Discord GM: And what would that be?
DM: Instead of directly into the throne room... He wants you to teleport him to just outside the throne room so he can make a big entrance.
SFX: (SMASH!)
Discord GM: A conquering tyrant after my own heart!
Thinking "tactically" in the mindset of a trickster god and an unstoppable magic bruiser is... a challenge, certainly. And it comes up more often than you'd think in fantasy scenarios, it seems...
The entrance is entirely in-character for Tirek, but part of me is wondering if that tweak will somehow end up leading to Dastardly Duo's undoing. It's a small thing, but it's the first time the DM has pushed back in regards to Discord!DM's plan, and we know that the DM & Mane Six have some kind of plan...
This is another piece of the "Tirek Doesn't Do What Discord Wants" foreshadowing. Discord is largely treating Tirek as Dragon to his Evil Overlord. The GM is setting him up to be his own individual with his own goals and methods. In effect, Discord is missing the detail that this is no longer a Spy Vs Spy fight between him and the ponies, it is now Spy Vs Spy Vs Spy.
My money’s on “this is just cool and fun”. I don’t even really think this is foreshadowing a split between Discord and Tirek, I think the DM would have made the same suggestion if Tirek wasn’t likely to rebel in a serious way.
I could see it both ways; especially since one of the greatest GM tricks is basically "oh yeah, I totally planned it that way" when coincidence happens. GM thinks it's time for some scenery chewing bombastic villainy, basing it off Discord's own penchant for theatrics. But since discord is chaotic and fairly mercurial himself, the actions feed into his overcompensating controlling nature, and in turn, Discord starts seeing patterns where none originally were. Thus, Discord would believe this was all pre-planned and his paranoia kicks in - in reality the GM totally just was going impromptu for this scene in order to make it fit the dramatics better.
I really enjoy when stuff like this happens as a GM.
The Princesses look so exhausted, I almost wonder how they managed to pull themselves up the ramp to the thrones. Never really noticed before, I feel sorry for them.
