I think... I just have an incredible weakness as a writer to villains negotiating and evaluating logistics.

Heck, that's like 70% of why I loved Netflix's Castlevania, now that I think about it. ...And why I wrote a whole DLC for Griftlands starring the top enforcer of a despotic capitalist.

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

Suddenly I'm remembering the pages in Darths and Droids where the GM is effectively arguing with himself in character(s). Best is the one from Ep II where he has to do accents as well.

You know you're a DM when you can have a full on conversation between multiple characters in voice without skipping a beat. I had a lover's quarrel at full speed and volume going once with the PC trying to interject and they both had to get shouted down enough other folks in the house thought we were in a shouting match ooc.

...I think you need to be crazy to be a DM

Arguably, the greatest graduation from novice to regular GM is the realization that NPCs, like the PCs, are capable of needs, wants, and agendas. With that in mind, many NPCs come to life simply by reacting to their surroundings... and dialogue is perhaps one of the most instinctual reactions around. Given that many NPCs are given unique quirks, dialects, or other ticks already, conversing back and forth with them is less about 'switching' between two minds, which is debating both sides of a conversation (or more commonly, an argument), and more just using a singular emotional state to speak on behalf of a mindset (two characters are angry only requires one to know what makes the two angry in the first place, etc). If you're already writing how what sets off a character, or their desires and wants, all it needs to do is vocalize that when the time shows.

Or, I might just be crazy?

That's how I compose most of my fan fiction. No wonder I ended up DMing so often.

I can't help but laugh that Discord has been demoted to character and DiscordDM hasn't noticed yet. Or maybe they have and doesn't care.

Discord's basically playing a villain campaign here, that kind of thing is half the fun.

So now Tirek’s the one getting overconfident. In hindsight, foreshadowed by his certainty that his original campaign would have succeeded.

I have to note that the Discord faces don’t seem quite right for the words exchanged here (the Tirek faces, on the other hand (hoof, claw? Paw?), are perfect).

Sometimes collecting screencaps is a game of compromise.
NobleCuriosity3 12th Aug 2022, 11:49 AM edit delete reply
Makes sense. I was kind of wondering if the dissonance was meant to imply DiscordDM had lost more confidence than was reflected in his words. I’ll assume not.

Re: Newbiespud weakness for villain negotiations: it’s at least a “weakness” you’re good at executing! I’ve found these Discord/Tirek discussions to be very engaging!

…I should probably have gotten an account and combined these three comments. I just kept thinking of more things to say about this page!

So Discord is playing the old "betray me and later one the heroes will defeat you later"
Digo 11th Aug 2022, 4:53 PM edit delete reply
Castlevania was like "We're going to dedicate the B plot to vampire politics" and somehow that became weirdly interesting.

I like having villains come together and negotiate things, especially when they share the PC party as their problem. I hope someday I'll see the Tirek/Chrysalis/Cozy glow summit. XD

I've heard of a Pyrrhic Victory, would this for Discord be the equivalent to a Pyrrhic Loss?
