At time of writing, I'm figuring this out as I go along just as much as the in-character group is. Par for the course, I guess. Something in the character-simulating part of my subconscious brain just decided that we had to take this tangent for reasons.

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

This actually is interesting from a players standpoint, as you're basically stumbling upon something that you probably we'ren't meant to stumble upon, so from a meta game standpoint it's not like this could seriously be an 'end the world' scenario like Tirek and Discord if they don't act here. But from an in character standpoint what might they think, or are they just that friendly or compelled by honor to give back the magical macguffin for the poor magic tree in the woods.

On the other hand, they can see in character that things here are unlikely to have changed significantly if they come back in a few days, and they're certainly aware of how much is on the line with Discord. In-character they certainly wouldn't feel good about walking away, but they can tell that's the safer option right now.

What's great about this dilemma is that while they have meta knowledge that it's probably fine to ignore this situation for a few days, they also have meta knowledge that karma is a very real thing in this setting. So if they voluntarily take a handicap because it's the right thing to do, they will usually get something better as a reward

The tree wants the orbital friendship cannon for itself. I hope we find more ways to make this sentence more nonsensical on its own.

It plans on using the cannon to power its crystal key chest seed tree castle playhouse and holographic Twilight avatar.

I, for one, welcome our new arboreal overlord.

The tree wants the orbital friendship cannon for itself because the other plants are being mean to it

A nice set of roll and they see what they can do to save the tree, but they need their main weapons against Discord a good dilemma.
Well i guess that they will go to save the Tree, save the words, get their power rainbow reward to defeat Discord and Tirek.
Or even without the extra power/elements Tirek's betrayal will be beneficial to them

I feel like there's something to be said, when you're playing a DnD game rather then watching a cute show, that certain meta knowledge isn't as obvious. In the show it's clear the nice tree's good, and the creepy vines are bad (especially with the addition of the vines attacking other things that the characters aren't dealing with here). In a DnD campaign though, I wouldn't just make that assumption without any other context beyond "The elements and this tree are probably connected somehow". Definitely something's up and I'd want to err on the side of caution perhaps, but just charging in without knowing anything's how you end up handing over your most powerful magical artifacts to a new big bad or something.

Question-- if you're figuring this out as you go, do you actually make random die rolls for their checks to get inspiration on where the scene goes?
rmsgrey 18th Sep 2022, 7:52 AM edit delete reply
If anything, you're more likely to make rolls to guide yourself when you're improvising than when you're following a plan.

That is a core mechanic of why I asked the question, but Spud could also be making up the numbers instead and not rolling anything. I was curious as to which it is.
Newbiespud 18th Sep 2022, 7:57 PM edit delete reply
Way earlier in the comic's run, I used to roll dice to determine the character's results (as long as they fit the story purposes - success or failure were always decided first). Nowadays I just save time and use the random number generator in my head.

You don't give in the Elements of Harmony, Rainbow Dash. The Elements of Harmony are neither stones nor artifacts. You are the Elements of Harmony.

So. Clearly, the individual ponies need to climb into the little hollows in the tree and sit there until the vines are defeated...
