Tirek: Are you *sure* you want me to release Discord? I can dispose of him myself if you would prefer that instead.
Discord: If I were in your horseshoes, Twilight... I don't know if I'd see much value in sparing me.
Twilight Sparkle: I said what I said, Tirek. I'm not going back on my word.
Tirek: I can appreciate that.
SFX: (SNAP!)
DM: One by one, the bubbles of force lower to the ground and pop, freeing you. Unfortunately, you're still completely devoid of any magic, so rushing Tirek would be pointless.
Rainbow Dash: That last bit was just for me, wasn't it?
DM: Discord drops to the ground last, as powerless as the rest of you.
Discord: I don't even know what's going on anymore...
It's kind of a dramatic scene, so I'm hard-pressed to come up with a pithy Author's Note, but also on top of that I'm boggling at the thought that I've reached almost 1800 pages!
Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: February 20th.
I wonder, with GMs, how often they will run their villains as keeping their word on a deal with the PCs? In my case it is very often, because in my mind, chaotic villains don't have the mindset to make deals.
Which is why I often wonder about the fey being considered chaotic, when at the same time I see them run as making deals and keeping that word (yes they do find loopholes, but that is why you employ a lawyer to read the deal first before you sign). ^^;
By the time you've found a lawyer and had them read over the contract, the deal has been changed. Don't leave the chaotic fey spirit waiting; they bore easily and get "playful" with the toys that wander into them.
Fey are bound by Fey Law to keep their word and honor their debts. Lawful creatures don't need to be bound to do things like that...they just choose to.
And being chaotic beings forced to follow their word and debts (and possibly slew of other rules), that kind of makes them crazier. And the evil fey take that out on everyone. ...Good fey take that out on those who upset them put more prankstery unless *really* upset.
Chaotic doesn't necessarily mean total anarchy. They can have laws and law enforcement, although it's likely that they might leave more to interpretation and be enforced on a more haphazard basis. And it's possible that those who are in charge of enforcing the laws are... not as chaotic as the rest.
I just feel that 'chaotic' doesn't really match up with fey behavior. I think they're more opportunists, which can be much more flexible with a silly alignment chart.
I prefer "Disciplined/rational" to "Lawful" and "Emotional" to "Chaotic".
The idea being a person follows a pattern, or goes by whims. Works better than trying to do arbitrary debates on what 'lawful' and 'chaotic' are, and instead describes how they approach an issue.
Personally if making a deal with the villains is on the table I basically always make them keep their part of the bargain (through there might be unforeseen side-effects).
This is mostly because I find it more interesting if they do that since otherwise it'll just make it so that there's no point in considering any offers made by future villains.
The exception involve a few villains where it's very very clear that they won't keep their end where the offer itself is just a bit of color and flavor to the encounter to be dismissed out of hand by the PC's rather than something to actually consider.
