There's nothing I personally dislike more in a roleplaying game than paranoia - of not knowing whether someone is evil or not, whether we're about to walk into a trap or not, whether the lead we're investigating is a waste of time or not. Sometimes we can make a judgment call based on what we know, maybe hedge our bets a little, and not feel too bad about the consequences. At other times we find ourselves knowing absolutely nothing after exhausting every possibility, but the pace of the game demands that the group move forward regardless. That's when bad decisions start happening.

Being a Diplomancer is tough, man!

Some I like, but most prove INCREDIBLY grating. Especially when she is, for example, being an ass to an ass. /badpun

Dealing with paranoia is simple, really. You just have to remember the few following rules:
-Everyone is out to get you.
-Those who aren't, only want to use you.
-Those who want neither are incompetents.
-Those who are helpful, trustworthy AND competent are either lying or will eventually be put in a situation where you will HAVE to kill/betray them, so you shouldn't get too attached.
-Anyone stronger than you is a threat.
-Anyone weaker than you is bait for something more dangerous.
-Anyone whose power equals yours is exceptionally dangerous.

Just assume you're the only sane person in the world and you'll be fine. Every bad decision ever made started by trusting someone.

Paranoia is an awesome thing to introduce, just for the halibut. I would make a habit of passing notes back and forth with the DM. Normally, note passing ramps up the group paranoia levels, but if I do it constantly, after a few sessions, the group will get used to it. Then they learn my chaotic evil wizard was in contact with the evil cult the whole time. He delivers the party right to the enemy's door, gift wrapped.

And then at the last second, when the party is in the middle of a large crowd, he slips them their weapons, and together, they slaughter the cult.

Then, a few months later, they're investigating a second cult, and nobody bats an eye when he seems to betray them to a cult again. But this time, he delivered them to the correct cult.

Getting lost and accidentally betraying your party to the wrong doomsday cult is a bit embarrassing. I'm sure you can understand that he didn't want any witnesses.

I really love the idea of accidentally betraying my comrades to the wrong doomsday cult, and having to bust them out so I can deliver them to the right one.

There's a guy in my group who constantly passes notes to the DM, and we've learned that every single time, it means he's up to something. Usually something off-the-wall and funny, but always some kind of shenanigans.

Though, when used non-abusively, notes are a good way for a GM to give a player some info that the other players don't have. Helps minimize metagaming.

For example, if only one player noticed something sneaking up on the party...

Ranubis seeing the slime crawling across the ceiling of a cave before it landed on the party and almost killed the Fighter, requiring him to be thrown into the slime to knock the fighter out.
the party jokes that they all have to take Hatred: Slimes due to that.

I can see Fluttershy _accidentally_ taking over the world due to "D'Awwww!".

She ends up being a major menace to Ponyville in an amusing fic that I'll refrain from naming, for similar reasons.

Rainbow Dash can perform the Sonic Rainboom, but she is just one mare.

Twilight Sparkle is one of the most powerful magic-using individuals in Equestria, but she is but one mare.

Fluttershy might outwardly seem like a soft and spineless weakling, but underneath that disarming exterior is a heart that's stronger than titanium and a rage that burns hotter than dragonfire. She excels at bending others to her will, and legions would willingly die at her command, for no other reasons than to please her and to avoid her disapproval. Fluttershy is but one mare, but one that could command entire armies.

(As it turns out, I'd actually put some thought into this subject before today.)

My vote is also for Fluttershy, cause she can charm almost any animal for her to use. My second vote would be for Pinkie Pie. Randomness + able to predict trouble = ruler.

I thought we were voting for most likely to take over the world, not most likely to manage it into a stable government. I vote for Pinkie and her wacky abilities, you can't run and hide for she is already there, you can't spy on her or she will predict misfortune upon you, and NOPONY BREAKS A PINKY PROMISE so once she has your vow you are hers FOREVER!!!

My first vote is definately for Fluttershy, for reasons as stated above. She goes to the council of world leaders and says, "Can I try running things, please?" making her cutest face and the squeak noise. Everyone capitulates. THen she addresses the world as a whole. "I'm in charge now. You're not going to cause trouble...are you?" Gives the stare. She now has absolute control of the world, since everyone feels her motherly energies towards them. No one disobeys Fluttershy because she'd be dissapointed in them if she did.

My second vote...Twilight Sparkle. "Princess Celestia, the entire world is united under my banner. Even those who didn't like it joined under threat of my powerful magic, and my secret alliance with Chrysalis meant that world leaders who resisted were replaced by changelings. THe entire world is united in Harmony. ...aren't you proud of me?"

First choice: Fluttershy, per LoganAura.

Second choice: Twilight Sparkle. Her default/canon version lacks the desire to try and the social skills to succeed, but a few of the fan re-imaginings could probably pull it off.

The insane evil genius of (warning: nightmare fuel) "Ask Researcher Twilight) could probably do it, though she has some very capable people opposing her (and is more interested in her horrific research than in power).

On the other side of that coin, a few of the "ascended to Alicorn" versions could probably unite most of the world through more noble means.

First vote is still for Fluttershy, though.

I'm assuming that Discord or something influenced this character in their decision making to take over the world, but in that case, I'd go with Twilight to do it. She's the only one with the brilliance to realistically actually achieve world domination after setting on the goal, but she'd likely go down in a ball of flames at the end.

My second vote is for Rainbow Dash through legitimate means since I've always wanted a candidate who was as pure awesome as she is. She's rated M for Manly which is impressive since she's 1) a girl, 2) a pony, and 3) has Rainbow in her name.

I actually came up with a concept that reinterprets the season 1 opener where all of the mane six are aspiring villains bent on world conquest (and Celestia is actually a reformed villain and now beneficial dictator, which explains why she can no longer use the "Elements of Tyranny" herself). The punch line is that the plot plays out almost exactly the same as in the show, despite the fact that they're all constantly trying to backstab and one-up each other. Originally, I wanted to make it a parody series, but I don't really have any video editing software (or experience).

In this AU interpretation, they'd all be too ineffectual to take over the world on their own, they wouldn't trust each other enough to work together (unless faced with a common threat, like a REAL villain), and anytime one of them actually comes up with a decent plan, another one would always sabotage it.

I'm going to put my vote in for Fluttershy, though, as I think in some other alternate interpretation of her character she'd be able to pull it off, and make the world love her for doing so.

The winner by a huge margine is... Futtershy.
As a Reward, she will get a one week stay in Canterlot, helping both Celestia and Luna with there respectable jobs, aka. she'll be their mini-helper.

Yeah, I like to keep a journal of my adventures, written from my character's perspective. I then base future decisions off of this.

It's a lot like playing a surprisingly effective single player game of broken telephone.

Paranoia is just part of the game as far as I know, especially in RPs with lots of exploration and detective work (which seem to be the type I often get involved with).

I've also played in multiple games where the party ended up getting betrayed by some of their own, and that was always interesting - but at times it did admittedly get a bit hectic and out of hand. Seemed to happen most often when the party wasn't well-acquainted with one another, like in a Skype-based game...

Maybe it's just easier to backstab someone you don't see on a regular basis. Don't want things to get personal after all...

Someone must have said it. At some point.

Point is that the most effective lie you can tell is a truth that nobody will believe. That being said, such things are beyond me, because there's really not much that people won't believe I did.

And it depends on the definition of 'greatest' you're using in the situation is. Often times, the more EFFECTIVE lie is the truth... but with it missing important context.

Regardless; I enjoy having 'gray morality' villains. Either through the villains only performing evil acts because of good intentions or by the villains questioning the heroes' actions.

Nothing throws your heroes off balance quite like the villain bringing up something they did three quests ago and pointing out all the negative repercussions it had... Especially if they haven't checked up the parties effected, so they can't be sure of the validity of the villain's claim.

Then again, I'm also a horrible optimist: I always hope for the best in people. So the VAST majority of my villains are not wholly unredeemable monsters, but are instead very damaged, broken people that have had their views of the world twisted and distorted.

Of course, on occasion, I'll throw in a REAL monster that actively resists changing their views, instead deciding to go on being the most evil being on the planet until they get put down for the greater good.

A good example is the "Geneticist" from a Mutants & Masterminds campaign I ran: Imagine an alien Mengele out to create a 'master race' by creating a hybrid between his species and humanity, while simultaneously inflicting horrific and painful mutations on an entire city's population for his own amusement as much as for 'data' and whose goal in the end wasn't the survival of his people or anything of the sort: He just wanted to create a new species that he would rule over as a god-king.

He died by getting a completely ordinary sword through his gut, then entombed in his sinking ship.

I like making the villains reasonable, friendly, and leaving you thinking, "Why are we fighting this guy, again?"

And then occasionally, I would drop in some dude with a fractured psyche, preferably one who's unpredictable, and terrifying, in a psychological thriller sort of way.

I love the idea of making the villain a chaotic good druid with serious anger issues.

Another favorite is having a Villain Sue that, when killed, shouts, "NO! Having my skull caved in with a very large rock! My one weakness! How... did... you... know?" And then immediately dies.

Eh. Villains are people. People are flawed. What makes a villain different from a hero is that the villain's ambitions and flaws have overcome their sensibilities and morality.

A brief run down of villains in my pony campaign, to demonstrate my love of, and attempt at, variety:
-Axel: A golem that the party knows next to nothing about, other than that he was the lieutenant to Cold Snap. Fought them, fizzled out of existence. (Based on the Kingdom Hearts character, yes. Include weapon of choice.)

-Shade, a Shadowbolt (Note: Not the actual shadowbolts, but rather a team in the crazy Nightmare-Moon-worshiping-cult that modeled themselves after them) that only ever wanted to feel special, powerful and respected. Despite being an evasion fighter better suited to open areas, he fought the party in a tight corridor to protect the base he was assigned to guard. Despite knowing he was just a pawn to the higher ups and he'd never actually attain the position he wanted, he still fought because he had come to believe in the cult's ideals. (Well, the ideals some of them were shooting for, at least.)
Party bard mocked him mercilessly the entire fight, including repeatedly calling him a coward. Note, again, that he kept fighting against impossible odds. (The rest of the party was Not Amused.) He was defeated and put through the legal system for his crimes. (Jury is still out.) He was also the lieutenant adjutant to Cloudy Watcher, before she left the cult.

-Cloudy Watcher: Blind pegasus, seer, liked to hang out in the campaign's equivalent of Halloween Town. Also one of the three leaders of the cult, working with them to provide a safe place for orphans... Until she realized the cult was full of crazy and defected. Joined up with the good guys when they promised her the orphans would be taken care of. Currently working to pick up the pieces of the cult, primarily by getting the not-evil-just-misguided members psychiatric help.

-Flame Scar: Earth pony that had a very rough childhood. The kind of childhood that I had to only HINT at, because after introducing it I realized it was... way darker than the campaign's premise would easily support. (And this is AFTER introducing the doomsday cult.) Essentially, he was driven into a cynical, almost nihilistic world view, until the previous leaders of the cult picked him up and groomed him to take over for them. He took the opportunity to try to depose Celestia and institute a new ruling party (not himself, I should point out) because he mistakenly believed Celestia was corrupt.
After being captured and actually MEETING Celestia, he realized he was wrong. To make up for his crimes, he volunteered to take on a suicide mission to stop the remaining members of the cult. Celestia gave him a verbal Bright Slap for that stupid idea.
After barely surviving the final brush with the cult (not using his original plan), he's now living under his previous name, Hearth, and working to atone for his crimes through various means.

-Cold Snap: Previous Knight of Lunar, this unicorn got a task of power that left him wanting more. He left his post and joined the cult, rising to become one of the three leaders. Not much is known about his past beyond that, but he's got a massive ego and clearly believes power is the only thing that matters. His ultimate goal was to become an alicorn by subverting the cult's goal (resurrecting Nightmare Moon) so he could steal her power.
Of course, he wasn't ALL ego. his admiration for power lead him to respect the party, even complimenting them during their various clashes. He still refused to listen to reason...
After a near death experience during the final battle (okay, it was more 'dead-for-several-minutes-but-alive-again'), he's currently a nearly comatose colt. It's complicated. Suffice to say he's under the care of Cloudy and isn't a threat anymore.

-Mez: Lieutenant to Flame Scar. UTTERLY FLIPPIN' INSANE and a sadist to boot. Little is known about her other than 1. Flame Scar found her and saw her as a kindred spirit, 2. When hit for the first time in a clash with the party, she screamed "NO ONE HITS ME!" and 3. She's been hearing voices for quite a while.
In actuality, while she's very much insane, the voice she was hearing belonged to Midnight Chime. Mez eventually betrayed the rest of the cult, including leaving Flame Scar to get captured, while she ALSO subverted the cult's ultimate goal. Unlike Snap, though, she got possessed by Chime and fought the party. She's currently MIA.

-Midnight Chime: Alicorn. Evil. Destructive. Apparently vengeful towards the Princesses for their defeating her in the past. Nightmare Moon may have wanted eternal night, but Midnight Chime just wanted to VENGEANCE!
Due to not regaining her full power upon body-jacking Mez, she was defeated, though she laid a curse on the party in her death throes. (Which also managed to save Scar and Snap's lives, oddly enough.)

No, the campaign was not made on drugs. Though it was occasionally made on insomnia.

I like throwing in someone that the group will consider a villain, because he/she is standing between them and their goal, but isn't actually a villain. Or evil. Or anything like that.

And then they would hate me, because their options are to either slay the guy, or abandon their quest.

I like tossing a little existential doubt into a game. Make the party question whether they're actually on the right side.

Raxon, my solution to that case is to get the good-but-in-the-way character into an intense discussion with the party leader about the rights and wrongs of the situation while I explore their domicile...then bash them on the head from behind to knock them unconcious. Once they're unconcious but alive, the party mage does a Sleeping Beauty style sleep spell on him.
Once we've retrieved the artifact or whatever and have accomplished our goals, we resume our positions in his domicile and wake him back up, watching him with concern after that (insert heavy object here) fell off the shelf and landed on his head. THen we agree that he had been right, and leave. By the time he notices the time lapse, we're on to the next adventure.

This sort of thing is why I think a David Xanatos expy would have been the perfect villain for Season 3 (much as a Q expy was for the Season 2 opener).

Xanatos is exactly the right sort of villain for the type of message FiM tries to convey, as he's a villain you _can_ talk around to the side of good (by showing him that being good serves his interests better).

You could even make a decent argument for the Elements' "orbital friendship beam" not working if used on him, as he _isn't_ evil (it'd more logically be used on whatever he'd conjured up).

Lots of fun might-have-beens with the series.

I fully support this idea for a future season. If they got Riker to voice him we'd be well on our way to having as many Star Trek actors as Gargoyles did. That amount of behind the scenes cross over would be mind blowing.

Exploring 'might-have-beens' is actually why I started up my MLP campaign. It started out as a "What if the magical girl elements of the series lasted past the first episode?"

I think I could have handled it better, honestly. My campaigns tend to run a bit too dark to suit Equestria. Given, I also think I could have done a LOT worse.

See I would be bad at this kind of game, because I'd just go and kill the "evil" person, and then wonder why the DM is editing my alignment.

These kind of situations are always fun for me since I almost always play "the openly evil former villian who has to do what the party says" I get to use options like direct Mind control or taking their daughter hostage to hasten nogiations or Pouring the Alchemist's mutagen into the Town's well as a distraction.

As a DM I love giving my group paranoia. One time I even got the barbarian to attack another player. At the moment I got them in a pretty paranoid spot.

I've been running a Game of Thrones game for a couple months, and it has made my players paranoid as all get out. They have ONE adventure where someone was using their House as pawns in his evil schemes and suddenly they're seeing intrigue and danger around every corner. Granted, there usually IS intrigue going on all the time, but it doesn't always involve them.

Case in point: the party is invited to a wedding and come to the conclusion that the bride-to-be is pregnant by another man (all true). They proceed to spend the next three sessions investigating everything and trying to stall the wedding.

I'm not sure how my game turned into an episode of Scooby Doo, but it did.

Mostly, I just start DOING things in order to shake the status quo. This usually answers the questions that cause the paranoia. However, this also tends to cause a different kind of paranoia in the other players ("Is the sorcerer about to do something incredibly stupid again?").

Normally, our DM keeps things fairly normal. Problem is, we (the players) tend to think in the style of Chaotic Pinkie. With a healthy dose of Paranoia (the system) added in. It's all because of one lousy incident that we all became hyper paranoid, even on a Spot roll that resulted in a "You are ABSOLUTELY POSITiVE you don't see anything at all in here."

This all began the first time we encountered a gorgeous chest of loot in a lovely room that didn't have traps in it. Our rogue goes over to pick the lock and then...we see his back get sliced open BY AIR.

"Hey, guys! No traps!" *fails fort save and is unconscious*

As it turns out, the room was guarded by a hellcat. Said hellcat is invisible at all times unless hit with strong natural light. No one is carrying pitch torches and every torch in the room already is an everburner. Being the Squishiest Wizard in the history of ever (Lavinia had seven max hit points. At level three. BAD rolls on a halfling) Lavinia just hid behind the cleric: getting reduced to -10HP/Killed Off For Real would be alarmingly easy.

While the rest of the party tried to distract the hellcat so someone could drag the rogue off to safety (he never DID roll well enough to regain consciousness in battle), Lavinia sat in the back going through books looking for information...finding nothing...and then on a pair of natural 20'S has the brilliant idea to follow the most hard-pressed fighter, wait for the blasted hellcat to strike...AND THEN throw a concoction made of ground chalk and the last of the party's ink in the direction of the fight.

That was the last time anyone ever went at a chest without rolling knowledge-everything.

^^; Unfortunately, it did not work. MAGIC didn't work on it. ("Oh crap." "Is that in or out of character?" "YES." And by this point, DM was cackling madly.) So Lavinia just sort of goes "Hey, Cleric, I'm gonna hide in your spare armor until I think of something, OK? *rolls nat 20 on a hide check*"

I would so laugh if Zecora indeed did turn out to be a witch...

Only for her to turn out to be a good witch; due to there being next to no alignment restrictions on witches.

...To bad they aren't playing Pathfinder, otherwise I'd know that was gonna happen with certainty.

But I'm not acquainted with 4e. So somebody find me a pony shrug picture.

There is a 4e witch class, and it is found hiding in the Heroes of the Feywild splat-book. As with all 4e classes, no alignment restriction (unless you are a divine class, in which case you are what your deity is) However, I am betting (since the only other book in use in this party appears to be PH2) that she will probably be a warlock.

I rather like paranoia in my games. Then again, I DM more than I play and I have a penchant for things not all being as they seem for my players.

Plus, what you're talking about is misinformation, not paranoia. I like that too - having NPCs tell the players conflicting things, having the common knowledge about killing a dragon be completely wrong, etc.

I'm an evil DM, but I do it in a way that my players enjoy.

The thing /I/ hate about being the Face for a party is when people decide that my attempted diplomatic solutions are the perfect time for a sneak attack. Especially since this means that I tend to be in the middle of the resulting melee.

I love Paranoia. As long as no one uses any heat based weapon in a small room. ...I didn't think it was POSSIBLE to have a structure still when that many grenades go off at once.

Paranoia? That's every single session of the campaign I play in! We're always surrounded by guys who are ten times stronger than us, decidedly evil, or are otherwise in situations that...

Here's how our situation has gone.

We started already in the frying pan. Then we went into the fire. After that came the inferno, followed by the volcano, and now we're about to head practically into the sun. It keeps getting worse.
