I love Twilight's face in the last panel.
Digo 25th Dec 2012, 3:42 PM edit delete reply
I know right? That's priceless.
ShadowDragon8685 25th Dec 2012, 5:44 AM edit delete reply
Third! Merry tree day, and that look on Twilight's face in the last panel is UTTERLY adorable. She looks traumatized a little, you just wanna give her a hug and assure her that everything will be all right.
vulpixel 25th Dec 2012, 11:52 PM edit delete reply
Is it bad that my mind went to bad places when guessing what twilight would need of rainbow?
SAFR 26th Dec 2012, 8:29 AM edit delete reply
Your mind has company in those bad places.

There's a question: Do you Dragons and Dragons people often have romantic affairs between your characters?
Necroceine 25th Dec 2012, 11:37 AM edit delete reply
In my group's Council of Thieves campaign, after finding out that my summoner's eidolon was his dead childhood friend, the other half-elf in the party was wondering if they had been more than friends, since death wasn't enough to separate them. He replied something about her not having to be jealous of the eidolon, and since then it's become a running joke to pair the half-elves together. They have no actual interest.
Digo 25th Dec 2012, 3:45 PM edit delete reply
In all the years of playing D&D, never once did any two players have any romantic affairs. With NPCs it happens, but players?

Heck even my wife's characters don't get into relationships with my one. I've been beaten up once by one of her characters though, which the other players asked if that's the D&D version of First Base. :3
CJT 26th Dec 2012, 4:07 PM edit delete reply
The groups I've played with didn't have PC/PC romances, but I'm told that varies from group to group.

Every so often one or another of us will have PC/NPC romances. My normal preference is to not do this, because it's something I don't find fun to roleplay, but realistically my _characters_ would be interested, so in a few campaigns it's come up for me. My scholar-type mage was planning to romance his counterpart at anothe covenant in an Ars Magica campaign a few years back, and in the Pathfinder campaign the ultra-badass elven NPC decided she likes my character. When I say "ultra-badass", I'm not kidding (that's part of why my character is attracted to her; she can kick plot, take names, and do it with style). She can out-swordfight my mid-to-high-level fighter, out-spell the party's mid-to-high-level wizard. And turn into a dragon, when we want to brown-pants entire armies.

It says something for the DM's skill that this neither overshadows the PCs nor unbalances the campaign. We've had (and used) the option of calling in heavy backup on several occasions in the past; now, we have first-line backup as an NPC party member (that, and she's a good person whom all of the party respects and likes).
CJT 26th Dec 2012, 4:08 PM edit delete reply
Addendum: One of the other plays in the group more routinely has PC/NPC romances. These generally aren't the focus of the game, but happen for good reasons and are roleplayed sensibly.
ShadowDragon8685 27th Dec 2012, 2:52 AM edit delete reply
@Derpmind: In the Shadowrun game I'm playing in, my character met one of the pair of fraternal twins that with her (my character) formed 3/4ths of the group's nucleus by flirting with her over the 'trix, then meeting her in real Seattle. Sexual relations ensued.

My group also has two free spirits, one of whom swore a supernaturally-binding oath of loyalty to my character (to the point that she basically has to obey me as if my character were the summoner and she were an Ally Spirit, though my character's a mundane, augmented hacker,) who also indulges my character in the bed in their shared apartment.

The group recently met another Free Spirit, this one along the lines of Amaterasu/Okami. Yeah, she's work on that one, too...

My character's kind of a horn-dog, really. She was born in 1991, lived a long life, including a youth in the air force, through to old age as a boring Ares number cruncher, then got Léonized to the age of 17 in 2061, and again in 2072 (shortly before the game started, in fact.) So she has the jaded experience of old age pushing her to do all the kinky things she never did before, and the rejuvenated youthful body with the energy that comes with it necessary to fully enjoy those things.
Valron 7th Jan 2013, 6:58 AM edit delete reply
We haven't had romantic relations between players in any of the games I've been in so far, but we have had several between players and NPCs. I'm currently scheming with my best friend to have our next characters fall in love when we start a new game. We're both guys, but I'll be playing a girl next game, in case you were wondering.
Akouma 26th Dec 2012, 2:41 PM edit delete reply
Well, my Tiefling Psion (it bears repeating that I love me some Psions) had a crush on his commanding officer within the royal guard, but never tried to have a character pursue relationship with another PC because that always seemed a tad weird to me.

Also, my sister's character in one of the games I DM for is constantly trying to get the uber-wizard NPC to fall for her. When last we left off (party members off to college, had to suspend), it was actually working through just plain creepy amounts of persistence. Also at this point despite his initial intense dislike for her character, she's still the ONLY normal person around he can talk to anymore because she's the only one who isn't some brand of insane.
Zuche 25th Dec 2012, 6:19 AM edit delete reply
I wasn't expecting to find this. Thank you. Now to get to work.
Tulip 25th Dec 2012, 6:33 AM edit delete reply
I'm kind of neutral about alt text. The trouble is that, even on a comic which ALWAYS has it like xkcd does, I pretty frequently read the issue right after getting up, so I just miss it anyway out of not-fully-awakeness.
Zeeth 25th Dec 2012, 6:43 AM edit delete reply
Oh, hey, there's alt text? I'd better go read that.
Huh. I have no opinion either way. Do what you want.
Hemi-PoweredDrone 25th Dec 2012, 9:17 AM edit delete reply
I didn't even know about any alt-text here, but I can't see it because I'm on my iPhone. With xkcd I can read it on the mobile site, but here is lacking in that function.
Necroceine 25th Dec 2012, 11:41 AM edit delete reply
I just flat out forget half the time.
CJT 26th Dec 2012, 4:10 PM edit delete reply
I hadn't noticed the alt-text either.

I'd recommend against it, as it's the webcomic equivalent of "flip the page over for the punchline". Anything it could add could be added just as easily (and more readably) in your usual author note below the comic.
Raxon 25th Dec 2012, 6:50 AM edit delete reply
As your present, I will do you alt text from now on. I'm so helpful! As an added bonus, every comic will be treated as the intro to sleazy porn.

Look! Ice cream!
Xander Cruize 25th Dec 2012, 7:06 AM edit delete reply
Yes, more alt text, moooore.
Guest 25th Dec 2012, 8:03 AM edit delete reply
I thought she couldn't use magic when she was like this. Is it just an aesthetic thing?

A regularly scheduled update as a present? Nice. I wasn't sure if there'd be one today.

Happy Hearth's Warming Eve, everypony!
andreas002 26th Dec 2012, 12:58 AM edit delete reply
Also, I vote no to the alt text. If you'd like to do something alt-text-ish, I'd recommend just putting it in the author notes, as you have been. Alt text is rather easy to be missed, especially if the previous comics didn't have it. I wouldn't strongly mind alt text, but I don't think it's the best way to do it.

But of course, in the end, it's up to you. Alt text or not, this is my favorite web comic by far.

Avatar 25th Dec 2012, 8:49 AM edit delete reply
If you think you can come up with a funny comment for each strip, do alt text. If you think it'll be too much of a pain, skip it.
Lyntermas 25th Dec 2012, 9:59 AM edit delete reply
Merry Christmas, everypony! And a happy new year!

As for alt-text, I'm with Avatar. Do it if you like, but not if you feel forced.

And now for a Christmas alt-script!

TS: ...Rainbow Dash, you don't think we only think of you as a fighter, do you?
RD: Look, roleplaying is your thing and combat is mine. I'm just calling it as I see it.

*many sessions later*

DM: The crowd stares at the rainbow that was made in the wake of the Sonic Rainboom. Some other pegasi come to take Rarity and the unconscious Wonderbolts away from you. You hear the crowd burst into applause.
RD: Aww, yeah! That's what I'm talking about.
TS: Wow, you're actually excited about this, aren't you?
RD: You bet I am. I just made the impossible happen.
TS: I mean, you're normally only this happy after you've beaten up some monsters. Seeing you happy over something that your character values is a bit of a surprise for me.
RD: ...I'm a roleplayer.

This needs to happen eventually in the comic.

You find some really interesting expressions I hadn't even seen before Spud. I love it.
Derpmind 25th Dec 2012, 10:36 AM edit delete reply
Alt-text is fine if you want to do it, but I personally don't like it. It doesn't do anything that your normal author's notes do and they're easy to miss. When I first went archive-diving into XKCD, I didn't know alt texts existed, so I ended up reading the entire thing twice.
Tatsurou 25th Dec 2012, 11:50 AM edit delete reply
Alt-text? How do I find that?

Alt-text yes! 25th Dec 2012, 12:03 PM hello edit delete reply
Alt-text is a valuable option to hold for any webcomic artist. Different webcomics express afterthoughts in different ways (xkcd with alt-text, smbc with its red button, qwantz going ALLOUT and having THREE different alt-texts AND a WHAT ARE THE HAPS MY FRIENDS), but I wouldn't mind whatever you choose to do/not do.

(but please consider it!)

First off, since my family is putting off the opening of gifts until tomorrow, I'll gladly take every gift I can right now. Thank you, Newbiespud! I hope you and yours are having a Merry Christmas!

As for alt text, I'd have to vote no. I've always considered your comments in the Author Notes to fill that purpose admirably well.

Also, add my voice to the choir (or would that be carolers today?) on how awesome that last panel Twilight face is. Makes me want to give her a big hug.
Digo 25th Dec 2012, 3:47 PM edit delete reply
Merry Christmas to all! I hope everyone is having a good time today.

Alt text is fine I suppose. Maybe you can use it for "Behind the scenes" trivia on a particular strip, like inspiration for the dialog or a funny incident when putting the panels together.
Guest 25th Dec 2012, 5:00 PM edit delete reply
Alt text is entirely your choice; I find it endearing, but I know that the folks behind (as an example) Wonderella and XKCD take way too long thinking up humorous alt-text, and a lot of what you NEED to say is in the Author's Notes already.
Tatsurou 25th Dec 2012, 10:06 PM edit delete reply
As far as alt-text...I'd say only do it if you have something especially humorous to add to the comic, either commentary or, perchance, an out of panel line from one of the characters.
Dusk Raven 25th Dec 2012, 10:08 PM edit delete reply
I kinda consider the Author's notes to BE the alt text, as I figured if you had something else to say you'd say it there. No need to complicate things with hidden messages.
Aegis Steadfast 26th Dec 2012, 12:08 AM edit delete reply

If you feel you can do it, then do it if you want. It's your comic first so you can do or insert whatever you want.
Broken logic 26th Dec 2012, 12:12 AM edit delete reply
Merry Christmas! I love comics that post on holidays. I can appreciate that they put a lot of love into the comic to go to that effort. Hope you had a great Christmas day everyone, and especially you, Newbiespud.
Broken Logic 26th Dec 2012, 2:13 PM edit delete reply
Oh, and yeah to alt text. Who doesn't like random alt text? Though I agree with Z2 below, that it might become a hassle thinking up even more lines on top of the strip.
Malroth 27th Dec 2012, 12:27 AM edit delete reply
So how do you access the alt version?
Broken Logic 27th Dec 2012, 1:13 AM edit delete reply
Hover the mouse over the text and wait for a little info tagbox to show up. Seriously, if you read any other webcomics, you might have to go read them again to see if they have an info popup with any extra hidden tid bits XD. It's one pro webcomics have on paper comics.
Guest 26th Dec 2012, 7:44 AM edit delete reply
I think Rarity should have a roll when traveling as well. I doubt she can see through all that hair.
Z2 26th Dec 2012, 8:35 AM edit delete reply
I'm a big fan of alt-text, much of the time. Though you should really only do it if you think it would be funny...

Anyway, merry belated xmas.
KathiraNarae 26th Dec 2012, 10:32 AM edit delete reply
Uh, Rainbow Dash? Do you seriously need your wings to WALK to Zecora's? Since it's obviously possible to walk there as the unicorns and earth ponies at least have to, and pegusi do have legs...
grenem 26th Dec 2012, 2:40 PM edit delete reply
yes, he does "your wings are now upside down and flapping constantly."- the curse's description from 4 or 5 panels ago
KathiraNarae 27th Dec 2012, 1:52 PM edit delete reply
Oh, right, I forgot the 'flapping constantly'. Thanks.
Tatsurou 26th Dec 2012, 2:46 PM edit delete reply
Regarding Rainbow's point about altitude...pegasi can stand on clouds, so doesn't that mean that clouds count as obstacles she can bump into? That would be why punching through several clouds at high speeds count as a speed feat.
ShadowDragon8685 27th Dec 2012, 2:55 AM edit delete reply
Regarding the Alt-Text... Sure, why not. But you'll have to go back through the archive to add it to the previous pages. :)
