Woo! This is one of the most involved pages I've made for this strip in a long time. In scripting, panel arrangement, and screencap acquisition.

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

Actually reminds me of a joke from Mentally Advanced Series where they allude that "horsefly" is a racial slur for pegasi.

Also, I may have used "allude" incorrectly. I'm over it.

Be afraid, DM. Be very afraid. Thinking on the same level as a mind that conceived of Pinkie Pie says nothing flattering about your own sanity.

Giggle Tail
Actually, if Best Pony Pinkie Pie said that to me, I would take it as the highest compliment :D
Rokas 28th May 2013, 7:24 AM edit delete reply
Hmmm, won't this be interesting? *Evil grin*

Any time Dash uses her noggin, you can be assured that it's going to be interesting. Frankly, I think she's actually the second smartest of the Mane 6 (after Twilight of course) but simply never developed that side of her because she was always obsessed with the Wonderbolts and athletics and had the same stereotypes that you can't be both smart AND athletic drilled into her.

But will that idea gestalt here, I wonder? Even if it doesn't, it shall be very interesting to see how Rainbow's player, at least, approaches this situation. (I'm still betting on fire.) XD
Derpmind 28th May 2013, 8:45 AM edit delete reply
Everyone knows that RD has at least three separate epic destinies. They can only let her develop in the show so much without her overshadowing even Twilight OP Sparkle.
Rokas 28th May 2013, 11:24 AM edit delete reply
Three? I know the Wonderbolts thing, but I'm not sure what the other two you're referring to are.
Digo 28th May 2013, 12:13 PM edit delete reply
Does the sonic rainboom count?
redwings1340 28th May 2013, 4:18 PM edit delete reply
huh, interesting theory about RD. Twilight is obviously the smartest, but after that... Pinkie Pie has a completely different IQ scale than the rest of us, so we can't really compare her in the same way. I think Rarity is really smart, just in the way she speaks and does things, everything about what she does is very planned and calculated. None of the others have particularly impressed me in this area to make me believe that they're well above average, but they haven't done anything to make me think they're not very smart either.
In the end I think this show teaches you that there are so many different ways to be smart, and Twilight's way (the conventional way) is just one of them. Every member of the mane 6 is intelligent enough to excel at what they want to do, and all know lots of things that nopony else does. Tests aren't the only way we should measure intellect or personal worth, and the show does a good job of highlighting a lot of other ways people and ponies can be amazing.
The Captain 28th May 2013, 5:09 PM edit delete reply
The Captain
Hmmm. This all reminds me of the theory of multiple intelligences ( A theory which I happen to subscribe to. I've linked it there, but I think it kind of hits on what you were talking about Redwings.
Raxon 28th May 2013, 5:49 PM edit delete reply
I subscribe to that theory, and have expanded upon it. I present to you; The Theory of Multiple Strengths.

This theory postulates that a person's strength may not be equal between two different tasks, even if they require the same muscular sets, and similar movements. I use this to explain why I can take a full, sealed can of soda, and twist it at the center until it bursts, but I can't get the pickle jar open, or why I can military press over a hundred pounds, but I can't pick my socks up off the floor. I have a full thirty minute explanation written down and filed away in the bullshit drawer.
Parchment Scroll 29th May 2013, 9:56 PM Oh, really... edit delete reply
How often do you use that "sock" one?
Rokas 28th May 2013, 10:13 PM edit delete reply
Really, I've just noticed that Dash has traits of intelligence:
1. She's obsessively nerdy about the Wonderbolts.
2. She's obviously good at not only flying, but trick flying. Fighter pilots aren't chosen because they're stupid, and Dash wouldn't be able to do the intensive, split-second tricks she can do without a brain big enough to comprehend those tricks, create new ones, and then apply them.
3. She notices things:
A. In the show's opener she was the one who made the connection between Twilight Sparkle's arrival and Nightmare Moon's return. And apparently convinced the others to follow along with her. Granted she came up with a wrong theory, but again, she's not genius, just smart.
B. In Sweet and Elite, she's the one who picks up on Rarity's story having holes in it, especially with the sundress.
C. In The Last Roundup, she's clearly not satisfied at all with Applejack's promise to "explain everything at breakfast". She clearly knows that AJ's bending the truth (not lying, bending), and she's not happy about it, even as she loyally gives AJ the chance to prove her wrong.
4. She is self-conscious as Hell, to the point where in Sonic Rainboom you can see she's acutely aware of how much everything means to her. A jock might be overconfident, but she was clearly aware of what could go wrong, almost as if her mind was running through all the ways she could fail, much like Twilight runs through... well, a lot of things in her head.
5. As mentioned above, she's a nerd personality type. She could probably recite stats on the Wonderbolts all day, and now probably knows Daring Do's 'verse inside and out.

Now, these don't mean she's like, a genius or anything. Certainly not near Twilight. But it does mean that I place her between the other Mane 6 and Twilight on the brain scale.

So again, not brilliant, but she's at least smart enough to be a nerd. And she is, really, just she's probably suppressed that whole aspect in her life so she could concentrate on her image and dream of the Wonderbolts.

Of course, this is a lot of headcanon, so I'm probably just blowing smoke out of my arse. XD
Raxon 29th May 2013, 1:27 AM edit delete reply
That, Rokas, is certainly one of the more enjoyable places to blow smoke out of.
Rokas 29th May 2013, 11:16 AM edit delete reply
Raxon, you are a treasure. And by that I mean you should be buried and forgotten for a few hundred years. ;)
Digo 29th May 2013, 3:50 AM edit delete reply
In certain situations, Dash does have a good eye for details. Rarity too, but they usually are different situations so... yeah, I see what you're saying.

If smoke is coming out of there, you might want to get yourself checked. :3

If it was deliberate on Newbiespud's part, I commend him. If not, I commend him as a master of serendipity. Either way, I'm glad someone else caught it, The Captain.
Space 28th May 2013, 9:18 AM edit delete reply
If you listen closely when she says Broadway, you might hear Rarity squee.

Anyway, just a little something else, Newbiespud; a thought, as it were. If you do plan to have the CMC in future strips, it might be a fun idea to have them be PCs; relatives of the players, or perhaps baby-sitting? Their inexperience and failure to grasp the complexities of roleplaying would account for many CMC decisions, like constantly changing class to reflect them trying to find their destinies in the show. I thought it was a neat idea; Darths and Droids did a similar thing with Jar Jar Binks.
Philadelphus 28th May 2013, 10:07 AM edit delete reply
"This is one of the most involved pages I've made for this strip in a long time."

And it shows. The quality level is far enough above the norm (which is already quite stellar) that I felt compelled to log in and make this post.

Also I love the panel with Pinkie saying "It's like you read my mind!" =)
Brickman 28th May 2013, 3:58 PM edit delete reply
We picked the wrong strip to comment on how irresistibly cute your Fluttershy picks were, because this one seriously tops the last one. Though ALL the panels are perfect here.
Digo 28th May 2013, 10:19 AM edit delete reply
The bonus here is trying to pinpoint all the episodes each panel comes from. The Philomena/fluttershy ones are obvious. Pinkie's panels come from MMMystery on the Friendship Express. The first of RD's panels is from the opening to Mysterious Mare Do Well...

Digo 28th May 2013, 11:11 AM edit delete reply
The first AJ panel I believe is from The Last Roundup
Ydenne 28th May 2013, 4:29 PM edit delete reply
Am I the only one who finds it weird that in panel 5 Fluttershy has Pinkie-style eyes?
aerion111 28th May 2013, 4:39 PM edit delete reply
Yes, you are.
Her eyes are just a bit more open than usual - she's paying extra close attention.
It looks quite natural to me, other than the whole 'anime-ish over-sized eye' thing.
_R_ 28th May 2013, 4:58 PM edit delete reply
....they'll put her in the 5th Harry Potter movie.
Rarity must be bored waiting already. The suspense is killing her, you know?
Raxon 28th May 2013, 5:51 PM edit delete reply
I thought Spike did that. Remember? Nightmare Moon threw Rarity off a bridge, and Spike shot his tongue out to catch her by the ankle, but Rarity's neck snapped from the G-forces.

Aww, don't be mad, Agent _R_, you're our favorite FBI agent. Hey, can you get me Chris Hansen's autograph?
Digo 29th May 2013, 3:51 AM edit delete reply
Where can I get the drugs you're on? :D
Raxon 29th May 2013, 5:18 AM edit delete reply
What drugs? Agent _R_ is secretly a 32 year old expert pedophile hunting FBI agent. (But don't tell anyone. It's a secret.) There's no such thing as a preteen girl on the internet.

Truly, Agent _R_, you are a worthy adversary, but you have met your match this day, for I know your one weakness!

Also, if you could get Chris to sign my suede wingback, that would be awesome.
_R_ 29th May 2013, 5:50 AM edit delete reply
...the most I am is a Hobbit. No less, no more. And I am a preteen girl. Check out The Royal Quest:Book 1:Princess Twilight on It was horrible. And I wrote it.
For further proof:I'm excited for Equestria Girls. True story.
Raxon 29th May 2013, 6:10 AM edit delete reply
That's no proof. I write terrible fanfics and was excited about EG before the trailer, and I'm effing Deadpool!

...Wait, that's not reliable! That's not reliable at all! What if I'm that snotty brat X-23!? I'M TOO AWESOME TO BE JAILBAIT! There must be a way to fix this! NOOOOOOOOO- Wait, no, my bad. My minidegenerate wasn't done regenerating. All done now. By the way, first rule of time travel: Never try to score with a woman before you've actually met her. Black Widow was mean in college. And apparently she doesn't prefer the gun as much as she said when Taskmaster was helping me hit om her.

Also, I appear to have sporks stabbed into my hands, and while they are quite nice silver, they're definitely not adamantium. Whew, really dodged a bullet there. Oh, hey! Free sporks! BW does like me after all! She'll be so happy when I call her on her unlisted number!

Raxon 29th May 2013, 6:48 AM edit delete reply
You, uh... You do realize that my silly posts aren't meant to be taken seriously, right? Wait, preteen girl, no sense of humor, clearly violent and emotionally unstable...

Oh crap. you'ree X-23! I'm sorry, X-23. Can I call you Exxy? Listen, Exxy, the last thing I wanna do is make you angry, and then have you show up and violate my mancave full of shiny pointy stabby things! I know they're not quite as good as what you have, but I'm not about to be the one to tell Wolvie that I'm the guy who's using your hands for my dirty work.

Oh crap. Chris Hansen's gonna be all over my plot for that comment! EVERY LUNATIC FOR HIMSELF!
-R- 29th May 2013, 7:23 AM edit delete reply do realize the comments session is half serious and half silly and I just played along?

Why do we need convincing? What changes if we are convinced? You say it's so. My welfare does not depend upon verification of what you say. Therefore, I accept what you say.

As for Raxon, please accept that he's an artist that likes to walk the high wire. He's just making sure there's a net handy.

Some kind of net, anyway.
Digo 29th May 2013, 10:18 AM edit delete reply
You on drugs and _R_ being an FBI agent aren't mutually exclusive things. ;)

On the other hoof, I'm basing my accusation solely on the basis that no one can find that many relevant youtube videos without being on some kind of performance enhancer. ;)
Zuche 29th May 2013, 11:23 AM edit delete reply
Good move, Digo. Now he's going to put up a link showing him at work creating relevant video links without the assistance of performance enhancers!
Raxon 29th May 2013, 12:30 PM edit delete reply

Also, I get around on the net more than Snape at a fanfic convention.

What do you think - are they in-game barbarian equipment, or did her player just don a pair to emphasize her plan?
