Artist: frostedWarlock

Newbiespud's Note: We filler now.

Like many great ambitions acted upon at the last minute, the mini-arc we had planned got sidetracked by even more real life. There's no time left to make the big comic pages we wanted. The Twilight Brew page will just have to be a teaser for another time, it seems. No updates next week, and we'll just pick up where we left off the following Tuesday. Sorry about this, y'all. This was not thought out on my part.

For now, though, have pony-Faust-DM with a d20 flail.

At least we still have some new Fallout is Dragons.
Session 22: Libsyn YouTube

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

Flails are awesome. D20s are awesome. !PONY!Lauren Faust wielding a D20 flail is awesome! *wicked guitar riff*

I remember in one Toon game, a friend played a barbarian with a huge club. At the business-end of the club was a daisy wheel from a typewriter. It tended to leave amusing words on the brow of his victims. :D

You know what's awesome only on paper? Rat flail.

I have to say that there is one time that rat flails are awesome.
Freelance 14th Sep 2014, 12:40 PM edit delete reply
Touché. That said, using it is probably going to have you look up an undead rat's butt as it attacks. So, mixed awesome?
Destrustor 13th Sep 2014, 6:03 AM edit delete reply
Aww, that's too bad.
Oh well. FrostedWarlock's art is still amazingly fun to look at either way.
FanOfMostEverything 13th Sep 2014, 6:05 AM edit delete reply
Agreed on both counts. I look forward to whenever you have the time to complete the arc, FW.

Also, if that thing doesn't deal 1d20 bludgeoning damage, I will be sorely disappointed.
Digo 13th Sep 2014, 7:32 AM edit delete reply
As opposed to the soreness felt by victims of that flail. ;)
Specter 13th Sep 2014, 6:04 AM edit delete reply
Pony-Faust-DM with D20 flail actually looks terrifying (getting crited would suck).

But, it's still also cute.
Kinrah 13th Sep 2014, 9:05 AM edit delete reply
There was a joke somewhere here about an epic flail, but...
Big Lurker 13th Sep 2014, 12:42 PM edit delete reply
The artist who was doing the webcomic 'Pawn' had a piece of art on Elfwood called Epic Flail. Some fighter had managed to mash his own head in...
Wyvern 13th Sep 2014, 10:05 PM edit delete reply
That's Fredrik K.T. Andersson who did Pawn, and he's done some very amusing things. For example, his 'human interest' piece:

I suggest not looking up his Bard's Tail jokes while at work...
Digo 14th Sep 2014, 9:59 AM edit delete reply
I loved that Human Interest piece. A lot of his work had great bits of racial interaction that would so fit in D&D, yet I don't see such things with the groups I gamed with. Clearly players need to be less afraid of being creative.
Big Lurker 16th Sep 2014, 2:09 PM edit delete reply
Thank you, I was blanking on his name. I love his work, and have actually based some ideas for my campaigns off of them; the Battle Gorger, Carcass Centaur, and Flesh Pod in particular...

Duodeca Flail. 1d20, Bludgeoning, Threatens on 20 and crit mult. is x4

When an attack with this weapon rolls a 1 for damage, the attack is treated as if it were a miss.

If the damage roll is a 20, it is treated in all ways as a critical threat, and you may roll to confirm as normal.

If this weapon's damage dice are increased (such as by Vital Strike) it will automatically miss if any of the die result in a 1, and threaten a critical if any are a 20. In the case of multiple 1s or 20s, the one with more takes effect. (Ties resolve the attack normally)

Normal critical range cannot be improved in any way.
FanOfMostEverything 13th Sep 2014, 6:42 AM edit delete reply
It's an icosahedron. Other than that? Very nice. :)
Draxynnic 13th Sep 2014, 7:36 AM edit delete reply
No no. Crit multiplier is x2... but it explodes. Roll a 20 to confirm, and you can roll to confirm again to make it a x3. Roll a 20 on damage when it's already a crit, and you can roll to confirm to bump the multiplier up yet again.

Like vorpal weapons, this only works for natural 20s - feat and enhancements that increase threat range only apply to the initial attack roll.

Hmm... I just had an idea for a dude with a D20 instead of a glass eye. Perhaps if he closes his eye and shakes his head and opens it, the side displayed changes.

I could make a D&D themed two face!
Digo 13th Sep 2014, 7:33 AM edit delete reply
Okay that is all kinds of awesome for a villain concept. :D
DanielLC 13th Sep 2014, 9:27 AM edit delete reply
There'd be too much friction. Maybe if you suspend it in a glass eye like a magic eight-ball it might work. You'd have to figure out a way to make it stop and face forward when he stops shaking his head.

Also, he'd need a mirror to see what it lands on.
Joe the Rat 13th Sep 2014, 12:56 PM edit delete reply
Fun fact: The answer generator in a standard magic 8ball is 20-sided.
Anon 13th Sep 2014, 2:12 PM edit delete reply
Funner fact: Of the standard magic eight-ball's 20 sides, 10 are positive, 5 are neutral, and 5 are negative.

The magic eight-ball's a sycophant! D=

Unless the eye was sort of a randomizer to determine which of 20 powers or spells the villain would possess for that turn (or 5 turns, or d20 turns).

Hmmm......that's actually sounding pretty kick-ass.... I think one of MY villains is going to do that... MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA
Raxon 13th Sep 2014, 11:44 PM edit delete reply

He will roll the die by pushing on the closed eye like a Pop O Matic!

Then it's simultaneously goofy and horrific, and then you can spring the random spell on them! Totally catch them off guard!
Malroth 14th Sep 2014, 5:02 PM edit delete reply
Make sure to include some spells that can backfire horribly. Sleep? We've been immune from that spell since we cleared the rats out of the old ladies basement. Dispel Magic? The Fighter doesn't give a poop. Fireball? Too bad You're in grapple range with the Target. Mass Heal? Why is that even on your offensive Eye powers?

You know, you could still post the planned arc by just posting multiple pages together. You know, instead of posting 6 images over 6 updates, you post 2 images per update for 3 updates.

Or if you can't post multiple images for some reason, edit two pages into one and then post THAT.

I'd rather have a Rat Morning Star. It's much better than the original Rat Flail.

(Bonus points if you get that reference.)

I found a group to play D&D with on Wednesdays. I went to my local game store, expecting to catch their "D&D Encounters," sort of a 101 class/tutorial. There was a group that needed a player. Lucky me!
FretSteelstrings 13th Sep 2014, 8:06 PM edit delete reply
Error in the system, can't edit my previous comment. Anyways, there was another couple of new players, One got a premade Human fighter, one chose to be an Elf Rogue, and I chose to be a Half-Elf Rogue, the elf didn't hear me say my race. Well the Elf tried to hit on one of the Half-ling waitress npcs, and got chewed out by her mother, who happened to own the tavern/inn we were at.

Disloyal Subject
I may be joining a new group myself soon - old buddies I haven't seen in a while.
They have a human cleric, an elven druid, an elven thief, a half-elf bard, and a nigh-indestructible dwarf wizard. I'll be replacing their minotaur fighter, so I think I'll make a half-orc ranger or barbarian, depending on which edition they're using - they're about to switch from 2.5 to 5e, and I've only ever played 3.5 of D&D.
Mykin 16th Sep 2014, 11:19 AM edit delete reply
I'm finding myself getting dragged into a group on Saturdays along with my normal Wednesday group, which will be interesting seeing as I have to work weekends and usually in the evenings as well. As for groups...well my Wednesday group did reroll a few weeks back with the release of 5E so I guess I'll put both parties up. Wednesday has our Human Barbarian, Human Tempest Cleric, Halfling Rogue, and my Half-Elf Light Cleric. Saturday's group looks like it will be an evil group, with a Human Fighter (Dual Wield), a Half-Orc Fighter (Two Hander), a Gnome Wizard, an Elven Ranger (I think), and my Cthuhlu worshiping Human Warlock. Saturday will be the more interesting one I think but I've already got a few stories saved up from Wednesday's group that should be long as the dice stop trying to kill my character off (When my DM gets tired of randomly assigning targets for 8 kobolds and rolls 8d4's to figure out who to hit, it's a bad sign when they all roll me...twice!)

@Disloyal Subject: I went from 3.5 to 5e and it's been an effortless transition for me. I managed to get all the important stuff after one session and it definitely has less mental math gymnastics than any of the previous editions (I do like how it handles a lot of things with it's advantage and disadvantage system rather than forcing me to quickly add multiple different numbers and trying to figure out if one set of numbers apply or not in this unique case.) But this is my opinion after a few sessions of play so take that what you will. I've just enjoyed it so far.
Mykin 15th Sep 2014, 1:17 PM edit delete reply
It's sad that, having just got back from Comic Con in SLC, I look at this and instantly want to make a d20 flail for the next Comic Con. Honestly, as if I haven't spent enough money already on my tactician's costume and the multitudes of shirts I keep getting when I go to those places.
Curb 17th Sep 2014, 7:30 AM edit delete reply
Ohh, I must ask, how is 5e?? I have yet to get the desire to check it out, but I have heard good things about it. I play Pathfinder, when I can. I have two characters, a female Gnome Fighter named Nikel and a human female sorcerer named Trixie the Great.
Mykin 17th Sep 2014, 8:13 AM edit delete reply
Like I told Disloyal Subject, 5E is really good so far. My opinion as of right now is that those from 3.5 and pathfinder will find the transition to 5e rather painless (I've yet to see anyone from the earlier editions actually play it but I'm sure those from 4e will love the fact that combat doesn't take forever anymore.) A lot of the guesswork and math work have been thrown out the window, which makes things go by a lot faster (no stopping everything so someone can add 15 numbers together to see if he hit something or jumped over a chest high wall.) In it's place is the advantage/disadvantage system. Surprise attack? Roll 2d20s and take the higher result. Blinded? Same thing except take the lower result. It makes things go by so much smoother that I really can't believe it's taken us this long to figure this out. Anyway, those are the two things that really stuck out for me. Others might point out that there are a lot of options for characters that feel meaningful or that there are a lot of optional rules that you can throw in to make the game go the way you want it too but I've always felt that was always the case (house rules anyone?) But that's the comments I've gathered from my game store so *shrug*.

Anyway, our Tempest Cleric (Wednesday's party) came from Pathfinder (really big fan of it actually) and he absolutely loves the system so I think there's a high chance you'll enjoy it too.
Randomperson 18th Sep 2014, 8:05 AM edit delete reply
My group does, though I kind of shoehorned them through the campaign our last DM started so we could start 5th edition with a fresh crew.

Many thanks. When I get a chance, I'll look into it. saw the new monster manual and players handbook at my local hobby shop. Will still end up playing a stabby mage or gnome fighter, always tend to run that direction...

I use a flail about that length in LARPing along with an upside-down sword. You don't really have enough defense with just a flail, and the sword is really nice as a blocker and a quick strike if your opponents get too close.

Interesting News

Seeing alot of CMC and Friends in High School art around, alot NSFW at that, I began to think about my Tales of Equestria RPG. Since it's set 20 years after the end of Season 4 in an Anthro Universe, the CMC would be in their 20's. I began to think about what I call the Gap of 20, what went on between season 4's end and the opening of the RPG. I'm going to work up some ideas like the CMC finally finding their cutie marks (GM versions), their friends and certain ponies who might become friends. With the CMC, the GM versions and their cutie marks are NPCs, if PCs want to play them, they can create them as they chose, including cutie marks. Should be Intersting at the least.
