I think we've already had a Story Time about player-invented events. Or maybe just about national events in general. Still, that doesn't mean we're not open to new stories that are tangentially relevant to any current topics.

Speaking of events, have I mentioned I'm attending Everfree Northwest as a community guest? Oh, I have? And it's currently on every comic page between the Author's Notes and the comments? Okay. I'll shut up for a while now.

As a Game Master, I try to be open to players who want to think outside the box. I don't want to say "No" if the idea isn't completely out there. Give them a chance for the attempt, even if difficult, and let the dice and their RPing determine where it goes.

Yeah, sometimes it might threaten the rails, but honestly if I worry about that, I shouldn't be investing in rails to begin with. :D

One of the greatest and most quotable movies ever. :D

I once made an interesting dungeon where it had the usual legend of "No one ever comes back out", dead or alive (no bodies were ever found of any would-be adventurer who went inside). The PCs tried their hand at it and found the dungeon not to be too difficult. Sure there were still some active traps and dangerous critters, but they were getting by pretty well.

Unknown to them, the last room of the dungeon was a circular one that has a myriad of colors and twinkling sounds that assaults the senses. At the same time it teleports everyone inside to an identical dungeon half way around the world.

And it's a one way trip. >:D

Thus the PCs discovered why no one who ever entered has come back. They end up on the other side of the planet with no way of getting back. At least they got to keep the treasure they found.

A great movie and a great book!

Seriously, if you have seen the movie and liked it, read the book. It is almost exactly the same, just has more jokes.

...If you have seen the movie and didn't like you, you may have been replaced by a doppelganger. They have been rumored to not like good movies.

Some of the best campaigns I've had, have been where the GM let the players come up with most of the plot - and the players were involved and creative enough to do just that. I've experienced this both as player and as GM.

(Of course, this can break down if the GM uses this as an excuse to be lazy but the players don't have any ideas of their own. A GM who wants to try to go for this needs to have plot to fall back on if necessary, and count on it being necessary from time to time.)

There are also the situations where the GM has to deal with the players doing the exact opposite of what you'd expect. My group used to do that a lot. We were supposed to enter the creepy dungeon from the front door. We did that and nearly broke our halfling. So the next time we explored the outside. My ranger decided to break off from the group and explore the other side of the prison. After getting rescued from a stick situation (thank you gnome druid for rolling a 20 on a listening check), we then entered the prison through a back door. This led to us taking on a boss battle from an unexpected direction way earlier than expected. Because we went the wrong way, we fought the stirge queen (giant super mosquito) first. Miraculously none of us got hurt because the other ranger (our party had 2) managed to win a bunch of rolls, I shot the stirge with a sleep arrow, and the other ranger did a cope de grace with her knives. We then faced the boss (spectre of an evil flute-playing criminal), but instead of facing him and the stirge queen, it was just him and 2 or 3 normal stirges. We managed to defeat the boss instead of a tpk. I'm glad the GM went with the fow of us messing with his plans, rather than railroading us.

That just seems to be the modus operandi my groups run under, regardless of how bad the idea might end up being. But then, it has turned out some pretty interesting stories that I've been able to share here.

So to heck with common sense! Load that paladin onto the catapult! We have heretics to slaughter and a world to save!

Also, it seems I'm in the mood for using big words today.

My fighter was used as a battering ram for years and we've frequently throw our halflings into the midst of our enemies so they can disorganize them while we caught up. This is run of the mill for us.

Of course, I'm referring one of my DM's more mad ideas. He and one other guy got bored one time and decided to break a campaign. Thus, the Heironeous Inquisition were born. One was a dwarven cleric with a titanium bible (with mithril pages and attached to a titanium chain) and a mini-catapult, while the other was a human paladin with a tricked out smite and whose mount was said catapult. Apart, they were intelligent, well adjusted beings capable of holding a conversation. Together, that went out the window in favor of pure self-righteous zealotry. Those that weren't followers of Heironeous were treated to a face full of bible and beaten until they were converted. A wizard managed to curse them so they would appear whenever a certain phrase was said out loud, then telepathically send said phrase to a Lich who then proceeded to say it out loud.

My cleric somehow managed to meet them face to face...sorry, face to bible, during our little break between the first and second adventure. After he got away, he found a sheet of paper in his hands and figured it was an important message to be delivered to their church...whichever one it was. He guessed Torm (my cleric is in Forgotten Realms while Heironeous is Greyhawk) and managed to convince one of the priests to just take the message and send someone to go pick them up. He managed to get a few blocks away before hearing the phrase "No one expects the Heironeous Inquisition." Almost immediately a shed fell from the heavens and the two came out of it.

We watched the chaos and massacre from a safe distance while eating some popcorn. Then we decided to leave when the two defeated the 5th Torm army and were starting to attack the 6th.

I like this philosophy, but I fear the first time I ran a game I was a little too lenient.

The game started off well enough, with the party neatly slaughtering a group of kobolds which jumped them on the way to the town - and finding that they were carrying trinkets with strange religious iconography. The problem occurs when they actually get to the town.

"I go to the bar and punch someone in the face" says the fighter.

He gets in a brawl with the bouncer and escalates to hitting him with his sword - the paladin (for reasons best known to himself) decides to jump in on the side of the fighter. The wizard runs off to sic the local guard on the whole party.

While the fighter and the paladin spend the night in the cells the wizard barters for their release with the captain of the guard - who agrees on the condition that they deal with the local bandit problem. Hooray! The players are safely back on track (it'll never last).

The moment they leave the prison the party abandons their quest to go shopping for an obscure magical item way outside their price range which would let them see invisibility. OK fine. Improvising hastily I give the players rumours which lead them to a curiosity shop which materialises at different locations throughout the world. Conveniently it's due to appear in this very town at the stroke of midnight. The players get jumped by a group of unsavoury characters who have been made nervous by their interest in this place, but they see them off and make their way to the shop.

The shop houses many oddities including the one they are looking for and the shopkeeper is a powerful wizard affiliated with the same cult as the kobold brigands. The players don't manage to get their item, but they convince the shopkeeper they're on the side of the cultists and he gives them more accurate directions to the cult's hideout than the captain was able to provide and masks to help them weather the sandstorm in their way.

They make it to the cult's hideout without too many shenanigans. The wizard collects some spider venom and the dwarf steals it and drinks it, but that's about it. Once they get to the cult hideout the wizard tries the same technique of pretending to be a cultist interested in helping with their operation in order to bring them down from within. The fighter and the paladin are getting antsy - they've not hit anything in at least five minutes - so they both ask to go to the toilet. In character. I send them off with one cultist each supervising them. They can crack a few sculls and maybe advance the plot some while they're at it.

"I have a shit."

"Me too."

*sigh* "What're you hoping to achieve here?"

"I want to freak out the guards."

*sigh* "Roll intimidate"

Natural 20. Of fucking course it is.

"It doesn't sound healthy. It doesn't smell healthy. Both guards turn away retching."

To their credit they take their cue to slit their throats. Unfortunately they decide to waddle over with their pants down to do so and botch enough of their rolls that the whole place is on high alert by the time they're done. The wizard - his attempts at subterfuge well and truly ruined - decides to duck into a chamber where it seems the cultists fear to tread. Er yes... well lets shelve that and deal with the paladin and fighter first. They decide to courageously stand their ground. You sure? OK. They're caught with their pants quite literally round their ankles while they do battle with every kobold in the place (actually its just a tough encounter they skipped). Some great sample dialogue:

"OK we should do nothing for a round and let them swarm us and then I can use my breath weapon here." *indicates square centred around fighter*

"Why do I have this useless push ability." *said while three kobolds were stood between them and a pit full of shit.*

And that's how saying yes to the players led to a TPK in a toilet.

Exhaustion: A condition involving extreme fatigue and lack of energy (results may vary).

Physical: muscle weakness, breathlessness, reduced tolerance to pain, poor performance of physical tasks and impaired reflexes.

Mental: More irritable and frustrated, poor concentration, lowered motor skills, and in some rare occurrences delusion and paranoia.

Edit: There is some leeway for AJ in this case.

I've seen a couple people in the fandom say they're attending Everfree Northwest as community guests, but it seems they're not listed on the website. I'm not attending but I'm still curious as to why they seem to be a bit behind on announcing people.

I have a friend who used to volunteer for the fantasy con and comic con that happen near where I live (he's now hired on as a permanent staff member for fantasy con). One thing he always impressed on me as he talked about it was just how much time and effort it takes to prepare and set one up.

So I imagine, to save themselves some time, they just wait until they have a bunch of names and then post them all at once on the site. Plus, it helps keep the news section of the site from getting too crowded if they avoid announcing people off as it happens. Granted, this is conjecture on my part, as I've only really talked to my friend about this, along with random employees from the two or three cons I've been to so far. So take it with a grain of salt.

While I was running a homebrew campaign for a circus-themed party, they perfected the art of flash mobs. Eventually, they reached a city where enough people had to know their name for them to enter the inner ring, and they split up. The girls rallied the women in a massive feminism riot IN SONG. Meanwhile, the guys were doing the same thing. The result was like the scene in Rock of Ages where a mob on either side is singing back angrily at the other. Then the party led both groups into their big top tent and left thousands standing outside trying to push their way in.

Obviously, the next morning they got their golden ticket.

If your talking about Story Time, I'll go ahead and say it should probably be things that have already happened. After all, I could go on all day about my plans on getting revenge on an annoying character in my party. But until I actually do it, it doesn't really become a story, just me talking about some ideas I have.

Do wars count? I had a party that started a war because they wanted the tribute-penguin (they were a traveling circus) they had given the king back. So they stole it in the dead of the night, which started a war with the neighboring kingdom. Penguins are expensive.

A non-national event...but at least an event for the party: I was playing a CN avenger for a god of insanity and chaos (yeah, we knew 4.0 doesn't have CN. No, we didn't care.). One of his creeds was to make the world more interesting. So I did things like: Send a letter telling the paladins of Bahamut to attack the party, as there was an 'escaped' murderer in it, convince the party to let me pole dance for a distraction (I even got a 20 on the roll! To 44 with my acrobatics plus a modifier for a 'pheromone' our fake-German alchemist made), convinced the party to go into a portal that would open the world to a plane of chaos, and more... To be fair, I did mostly help the party, but I did purposely create a lot of events.

Oh, and the pole dancing did lead to a more world-event, as our party had decided to make the half-elven baron's heir to a racist kingdom take over, and it was a distraction to sneak past the magistrate so we could get the papers signed by the dying baroness. She was not pleased by the illegitimate heir, but went through with it. ...We did not tell her he was half-elven.

The problem with these topics being about stuff that happened is that I have VERY little experience with playing d&d (Not for lack of trying I just couldn't find a group to play in until I discovered roll20 a month or so ago) so I don't have any good experiences to talk about. So with that in mind do you guys have any tips/ideas for me to try out? I've gotten into playing artificer so crafting ideas would really help.

Well, as it turns out I've got a good one for this story time.

I was playing a 13th Age campaign which ended recently, but the second to last session had a fantastic derail I spearheaded.

The campaign was set in a post apocalyptic world. Most of the world was under something called the veil. Below it were monsters along the lines of Cthulhu, nearly immortal. A war ship was made to fight them, but it wasn't finished so the people using it would battle against monsters, only manage to drive them off, then kill everyone that saw the ship because it wasn't done. Monsters were generally attacking floating cities, so this was bad.

My party was on an island, when a scout ship showed up. We fought and won, then learned the war one was coming and would likely be destroying the island. Something similar had happened before and we evacuated as many people as we could. I think that was the GM's plan here too, but I had a different idea.

You see, we had this ship the war ship would trust, so if we acted like it had beaten us, we could get in close when their guards were down and board the war ship, going for the source of power that let it fly. (Incidentally, the power source of flying ships were called Crystal Hearts. Coincidence.) I was playing a necromancer, and 13th Age rituals let you get any reasonable effect you can justify by giving up one of your spells until the next full heal. One ritualized Summon Undead later, I had a couple skeleton crews for our ships, as well as an extra boarding party to act as a distraction. The ships kept up an attack on the Warship, the skeleton party acted as our distraction, and we snuck in unnoticed.

The GM had obstacles of course. We beat them too. First, we managed to trick the outer guards of the Cystal Heart we were there to make sure it stayed stable and bypassed that fight completely. Next, we ambushed the inner guards, taking them out quickly and easily as I removed the Heart safely. Last, a skill challenge to escape. That was meant to work by giving us a high DC, and we each would make a check with a cumulative +1 each time to figure out how long we took to get out and how much trouble we got into. One nat 20 on the first check later, and that was pretty much bypassed too. So we escaped back onto our ship, but the GM decided to go with one last try to stop us, as the wizards on the war ship managed to keep it going without the Crystal Heart for long enough to try and attack us. I then had my skeletons on the scout ship ram it really hard. Destroyed our new scout ship, but it also did enough damage to finish off the war ship. That was a sacrifice for us, at least. I had liked the scout ship. But it was well used, and even the GM admitted that was an awesome session.

We knew the campaign was ending soon, so nobody really minded the high chance we had at dying to the war ship. They thought it'd be cool enough to be worth it even if it failed, and it totally was. I had finally managed to work in a skeleton crew somewhere, too, which took a lot longer than I expected playing a necromancer in a campaign set on ships. We had one more session where we finished things up and ended the monster threat for good, but honestly this one was the best session as far as I'm concerned.
