590?! Are we really that close to another one of those coveted 100-page milestones where I don't actually do anything special for them?

Although... Page 600 will land on the Thursday right before Everfree Northwest, on the day I probably check into my hotel. So I guess me appearing at EFNW and (possibly) running a panel is the 600-page special thing somehow?

Either way, this is not a good month to have to fit in production for another Story Time video on top of everything else. That'll be for 700.

I don't get why having the first comment on a particular page is so appealing. But I guess it speaks to how dedicated some people are to this comic; that they'll wait until the last possible second for the comic to go up, regardless of how late it is, and then strike! Either way, glad to see you were successful this time around, Spud.

Anyway, it just seems like doing a video every 200 page milestone works out better for you. I mean, we got one at page 300 and then the next one came at page 500, so having another one at page 700 just seems to fit into the pattern that seems to be emerging here.

But that's just me.

I'm not sure what you mean by "counts." Gunning for first for first's sake and nothing else is still lame, even when I do it. So I guess it doesn't "count."

I feel like it comes out of a need to win, similarly as to why people race. With the exception of this being a place where people comment instead of running, riding, driving, or flying.

Dash's player forgot to level up? Okay, in my experience that is a VERY rare thing to see. My players over the years were always keen on leveling up as soon as the xp rolled in. Heck, some would level up ahead of time with a new character sheet and switch as soon as the points were officially given. XD

Ah, I miss those kooky players.

Oh, it happens, believe me. A lot of it depends on how the group operates. If you do your leveling up out-of-session, and a game runs late (or you have someplace you really have to be right after the session is over), you just jam your stuff in your bag to go home.

Then that ridiculous thing called Real Life kicks in, and before you know it, it's the next session, and you pull out the sheet and whoops, not advanced, and everyone else bumped theirs up at the last session or over the week, and so no one is talking about it, so it isn't obvious right away, until all of a sudden you realize someone is using a new Feat/Edge/Power/Talent/Schtick and you start smacking your head.

The real downside is that it often comes up in a situation like the comic--where you're in the middle of a tense scene. There's frequently a verbal dance that kicks in, since you now know at least one thing that you really would like to be doing better with in this situation. But it can feel off, especially if it wasn't something that is totally obvious for your character. (In the comic's case, though, I would expect Dash to be maxed out on Athletics, just because that seems like what would be used for flying....)

Yeah, I am actually guilty of forgetting of leveling up. However, it's not usually of anything important:
-Maxing out my possible damage output to protect the healers.
-Maxing out my possible healing output to protect the fighters.
-Increasing my diplomacy cause I'm stuck watching the children (and child like PC's) when trouble rears it's massive ugly head.
-etc. etc.

That's why I like Newbiespud's way for the whole leveling dilemma when it gets there, to ask about what you did for your level up before the session starts, that way the dilemma never happens (except for maybe when a player or two doesn't show up).

Me as a player never forgot to level up. What I have done was level-up wrong. As in multiple math errors, wrong named feats, etc. That'll teach me to work on characters at 2 in the morning. XD

GM: "Hey Digo, what feat is 'Great Cleavage?'"

I've been in a game where someone started out behind the other players because they didn't realise they were supposed to be advanced above the normal starting point.

It was only a short one-shot thing, so it didn't really matter, but the funny thing was they still ended up being the most competent of the characters involved even with that setback

Sometimes meta-gaming with new levels can lead to pretty dramatic situations. In a recent Dark Heresy game my character's brother went missing when our Hive caught fire and I spent the best part of 500xp on various investigative skills as I failed roll after roll in my desperate search for him.

Having a reservoir of unspent XP can be a lifesaver if you find yourself needing to pick up skills on the fly. It's... disconcerting to be the VERY proud owner of a top-of-the-line xenotech troop dropship and realize after strapping in that you don't know how to fly it. Thank goodness Assassins get decent access to Pilot (Flyer).
I was chronically behind in that campaign; as a new player, I was worried about wasting XP on skills & talents that'd be useless. In any other campaign I'd have felt like a munchkin for trying to further powergame a character sneaky to the point of being near-invisible, agile enough to dodge nost any attack, and easily able to dual-wield sniper rifles for 7d10+15 damage per round in Dark Heresy, but under the circumstances it was necessary to keep up. Autocannons aren't exactly balanced to compete with.

This happened to a player in my group not... a month ago I think, might have been a month and a half. The player in question is REALLY bad at remembering to do things outside of sessions.

Not quite a "forgot to level up' story, but...

My first time playing Gurps, space campaign. One of the players was playing the hotshot pilot, had augments for it, etc. Except that his rolls were pretty lackluster at best. It wasn't until he had augered a shuttle into the ground (flying nap of the earth at supersonic speeds and manages to the the -one- tree in three hundred miles of flat land) that he realized why some of the numbers on his character sheets had been bothering him.

He had set aside about 40-50 points of his budget at chargen to dedicate to piloting skills, and saved it for last. And then apparently forgot about it when everything else was completed. So our barnstorming pilot basically had no applicable skills in place when we needed them.

The expression "Well, any one you can walk away from" has remained in our group as shorthand for "please shoot me".

True but she and Fluttershy are newer players to tabletop games where as all the others are established vetrens so as OCD as she is, if the DM didn't tell her she leveled up she might not know to do it.

She did learn the rules inside and out beforehand, though; it's practical experience she lacks. Leveling up being firmly a matter of crunch when the group is one that tracks XP, I think she'd handle it. I rank them as follows:
1- Fluttershy
2- Pinkie
3- Rarity
4- Dash
5- Applejack
6- Twilight

It's times like this that i remind everyone at the begining of a session that we leveled at the end of the last game so we dont have people scrambling over small things like a skill challage they failed by 1 point >.>

Yea... I always forget it when I can breathe under water, its one of those things that never comes up and i end up buying breathing items when i don't need to.

Would forgetting to complete your character sheet before the first session (or the third or fourth: the first session where your PC's skills really matter, such as first combat for a fighter or first talking-away-the-guards for a diplomancer) be like forgetting you can breathe air?

I've had a player go through an entire 26-session campaign and never completing his character sheet due to forgetfulness. We even had about 5 'level ups' in that time frame.

I mean I can see forgetting to reward EXP, But forgetting to level up is like forgetting to Cash you paycheck. If you don't do it, you might be screwed for the week.

Not sure why the leveling is a 'big' problem here, unless the DM has a 'no mid-session levels' policy (possibly to avoid meta-cheating), or the leveling itself would take ages.

Given RD is a veteran 'kill monsters' player, she likely knows how to build the Barb by heart and can level up in TEN SECONDS FLAT.

How awkward are the rules regarding leveling a Barbarian from 7 to 8 in D&D 4th edition?

In this context though it'd be easy for her to pick/retrain feats that boost her skills for the skill challenges vs AJ. Which could cause some friction from AJs player, specially if RD retrains away from said feats next level.

I think the bigger news is that Rainbow, the hack-and-slash munchkin, *forgot to actually use her XP and level up her character*. I'll be sad if they don't realize that that's a major change for her, and a sign that she's getting more into actual roleplaying.

Heheh. In the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game my friend runs, I play a diglett who's a level behind the rest of the party because I keep forgetting to level her up. Good thing we tend to focus more on role-play than roll-play. ^_^

...Yes I will level her up eventually.

I think that's the better investment, for the Roleplay than the statistics. Stat-wise my Fallout character isn't anything special, but RP-wise he's the heart of the team really. :D

... I miss being able to role-play in an RPG, now it's nothing but rolling skills and fighting against unreasonable opponents (it's no fun trying to make my character's ac be that of a demi-god a level 1 just to stay alive for a session).

That's how the majority of my games are. About 2/4 role-play and maybe 0.5/4 of actual dice rolling. The 1.5/4 is us messing around and people getting distracting with the odd shiny. I can probably blame the role-play part for why I don't actually level up that often.

Heck, the only time I didn't level my character up (not because I forgot but because I didn't know what to get and the books were at someone else's home) turned out to not matter much since we didn't do any rolling of dice for that session at all. I doubt you can get as much insanity as I tend to get myself into if you mostly focus on the mechanics of the game rather than the actual soul of it all.

Not a "forgot to level up", but when I first played 4e, I went several sessions with my wizard before finding out that when you're in light armor, you add your intelligence bonus to your AC. So my AC was something like 12. In the few sessions before I realized what I'd missed, I'd fallen to negative HP and started doing death saves twice.

On the other hand, that led to one of the awesome moments of the campaign as well. I rolled a 20 on a death save, and the DM had me first appear in an ethereal realm in front of the throne of Indomitable, one of the antagonist dream-creatures, who decided after some back-and-forth that he liked my spirit and infused me with elemental fire. So I spent a session or two as a Human Torch before we took down that antagonist.

The GM of the current campaign I'm a part of (even though we haven't been able to continue playing in forever) Had a rule that we weren't allowed to straight out tell each other our stats so if we had say a Strength of 18 instead of saying our strength is 18 we would have to say we're very strong. The annoying part is that this includes HP which makes it harder for our healer who needs healing more.
