And then, sometimes, it's up the DM to decide that for some reason, based on how their vision of the world works and how the dice have fallen, something even stranger than what the players devised is now going to occur.

A new session of Mawlers Take Manehattan is up! This is an especially fun and silly one.
Session 4 - At the Zoo: Libsyn YouTube

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

I think one of the funniest "Stranger than what the Player Devised" scenes happened in that superhero campaign that I was The Great and Powerful Trixie.

The team needed a distraction at the M.I.T. campus so they can break into an office building one evening. So Trixie stood out in front of the building and put on a magic show. The crowd she drew to her was just gargantuan.

And then the Bronies showed up wanting autographs, hugs, and some asking if Trixie could take them back with her to Equestria. Boy that got awkwardly weird, but it was just the start. The cops showed up and they had no idea what to do because they at first thought it was another M.I.T. prank, which started an argument with the bronies. Which led to a "Unicorn Rights" movement and that ended in a small-scale riot where I needed to be rescued by the rest of the party once they finished doing their work in the office.

It was the distraction that could only auto-crit. :D
Specter 18th Jul 2015, 7:57 AM edit delete reply
I get the feeling that if Trixie acquires the Leadership feat. there will be a lot of choices to pick from around the M.I.T. area.

... Is this the same campaign where shield was suppose to keep the colorful talking unicorn from being known to the public? Cause if it is, shield is really bad at it's job.
Digo 18th Jul 2015, 8:15 AM edit delete reply
Eeyup, same campaign with SHIELD. In their defense, it was really hard to contain a bombastic blue unicorn like Trixie in any fashion. XD
Blyndpwn 18th Jul 2015, 11:35 AM edit delete reply
Have you seen the Agents of SHIELD TV Show? "Bad at their job" is a compliment of the highest order for those yahoos.
Wyvern 18th Jul 2015, 2:38 PM edit delete reply
I said something similar about Torchwood. These were supposed to be the professionals protecting Earth? The other show of the period was The Sarah Jane Chronicles, and given the choice I'd bring my alien invasion problems to the amateur reporter, her teenagers, and her tin dog.
Digo 18th Jul 2015, 9:14 PM edit delete reply
I used to watch Agents of SHIELD. It fell off my radar around the Inhumans part of the story. Could not get into that arc.

I completely forgot about the mini twister.
Let's say that Twilight and the girls comes here, and stay for a year.
They do need to earn money. Now this fake world never had MLP, but is very kind to the girls. What job should they take.
Bonus points for picking a not so obvious job.
We are dealing with the canon forms. So no Nyx(me sad).
Captain Bacon 18th Jul 2015, 6:31 AM edit delete reply
Twilight and Rainbow obviously become defense contractors. What kind of military is going to pass up a pony-sized supersonic spy jet? As for Twilight... teleportation, m8.
Night Sage 18th Jul 2015, 7:09 AM edit delete reply
Applejack would look for a farm to work on. With her strength, she would also probably do construction.

Pinkie Pie would be the worlds greatest party planner, DUH! Though her Pinkie Sense would make her ideal for the military, as she'll be able to sense the things coming, thus giving ample warning for the troops to escape.

Rarity would design outfits as usual. However, her skills in finding gemstones, would make her an ideal catch for those who holds a monopoly on Diamonds. Keep her from revealing that there are more diamonds in the world than they want you to believe.

Fluttershy would work at a zoo. Her passiveness wouldn't make her ideal for any other job. Government will try to get her to create trained animals for the military, but it probably won't go well, when Fluttershy explodes to defend the animals.

Rainbow Dash would race every Nascar, and Indie 500 racer out there, looking to be the best. Her ability to absorb information while flying, makes her ideal for high speed recon for the military, and search and rescue missions. She would likely not refuse.

Twilight would find a nice Library to work at, and use that time to study the history of our world. The government will likely force her to work for them, because of her ability to teleport.

Just so you know, I am now picturing an alternate version of Jurassic World with Chris Pratt replaced with Fluttershy.

It wouldn't be a very long film though.

Dinos get loose.
Fluttershy uses stare.
Movie over.

Captured and experimented on is not the kindness I meant.

The MunchKING
Catch more flies with honey than vinegar man.

Twilight would talk their scientists' ears off about pony physiology and magic if they just ASK. And possibly share human knowledge/technology.

No need to capture people and do horribly unethical experiments on them when $100 and a place to stay for her year would accomplish just as much. :p
ANW 18th Jul 2015, 10:19 AM edit delete reply
You got the idea.
Specter 18th Jul 2015, 8:35 AM edit delete reply

Pinkie could get a job as Paparazzi, using her own freaky high speed movement to her advantage.

Rarity could be a professional tattoo artist, using who-knows-what kinds of inks.

Applejack could take a job as a corrections officer for troubled youth, helping them get a more honest (if not fair) life.

Rainbow could work as novelist for action-fiction books.

Twilight could be a professional gambler, cause I think the world needs a lesson in proper gambling etiquette

Fluttershy would be a motivational speaker, with her beautiful assistant Iron Will.

Who would bet a significant portion of their net worth in a game where the other player has (comparatively) limitless wealth and utter authority on who wins and who loses?

(Just because I'm pretty sure I suck at being subtle: there are, as you read this, several thousand people in Las Vegas proving my point.)
Specter 18th Jul 2015, 6:33 PM edit delete reply
True, but I never said the game was face-to-face (and for wealth, I prefer to think Twilight as unicorn Twilight and not princess, cause I don't enjoy the loss of the 2 per a race thing. So money is a question for her).

Twilight: Discreet courier service. Teleportation means instant, noninterceptible delivery.

Fluttershy: Hostage negotiator. "I.. said... put the bunny... BACK IN THE BOX!"

Rainbow Dash: Soccer Player. The Air Bud clause states that anything not expressly forbidden is legal. Ain't no rule sayin ponies can't play.

AppleJack: National Park Ranger. Her innate understanding of Earth and plants, combined with her excellent sensibilities makes her perfect for managing and tending a large park.

Rarity: Mining expert. She can tell you what gems are buried nearby, for a small cut of the findings.

Pinkie Pie: Toy Line Designer. Nobody knows fun like Pinkie!

Twilight would quickly find out about Google, and within a week would be starting to publish scientific papers on Equestrian magic in some sort of publicly accessible format. (By the end of the first month, she would be typing them on a custom Gentoo computer and have a high-spec tablet running a customised version of Replicant to carry around everywhere).

Rarity would be a clothing designer - the challenge of dealing with a bipedal species who wear clothes ALL THE TIME would be something she could NEVER pass up. Around month two, she would find out that the company actually *manufacturing* her designs was using cheap Chinese labour (specifically, small children) and there would be a court case and a lot of bad publicity for the company as a result; Rarity's contract would turn out to be inescapable, but the ponies would work together to force the company to use a more ethical labour source in any case (and the profits from Rarity's designs would more than pay for it).

Fluttershy would work with animals, probably in some sort of nature reserve. At some point, she would track down a rhino poacher; the next day, said poacher would surrender himself to the local police. Rhinos in Fluttershy's park would then remain untouched as long as she kept working there.

Rainbow Dash would take a job in weather management, bringing rain to drought-stricken parts of the world. Twilight would set up an auction-type bidding webpage for her, where people all over the world could put in hidden bids for weather. Most people would assume that the highest bid would win, but they would be wrong; no matter how much Bill Gates paid for a sunny day for his daughters' birthday, the poor farmer paying the half-dollar he can afford for a spot of desperately needed rain would always get his weather first. Rainbow would also take part in airshows and the Olympic opening ceremonies. After a few months, it would be proven that Rainbows' weather work was having a measurable effect on global climate, and Twilight would spend weeks trying to work out if the cumulative effect was positive or negative overall.

Applejack would take up farming. She would find some fairly cheap piece of land (probably bought with the proceeds of a single one of Rainbows' weather jobs) and proceed to get crop yields impossible for human farmers.

Pinkie Pie would plan parties. Her parties would turn up, unannounced, when and where they would do the most good; she would never charge anyone, but her efforts would ensure that the ponies were always welcome anywhere they go. At some point, someone would take a good look at her party cannon, and try to build another one; the fine details would require data from dozens of Twilight's papers on Equestrian magic and how to get it to work in Earthly conditions.
Dragonflight 21st Jul 2015, 3:05 AM edit delete reply
At some point, no matter which version happens, they'd see a super sentai show, and get these goofy grins on their faces.

About a week later, the Power Ponies would start making the world a safer place for everyone. Not to mention that unlike the comic, *these* power ponies have the Orbital Friendship Cannon on hot standby if they really need it...

I gotta say, the GM's approach here isn't something I can really agree with. AJ hasn't done well on a roll and Dash is suffering for it. Where was her chance to avoid getting sucked into this mess?

I remember a campaign a friend was in once. They were on a train trying to find an assasin, and one of the party made a search roll which they botched. The GM responded to this by having the assassin get to incapacitate a DIFFERENT player who hadn't done anything. Much cries of fowl were called afterwards.
Archeo Lumiere 18th Jul 2015, 11:32 AM edit delete reply
It was exploding doubles, and 15 is decent. Besides, did you see that chart roll in the DM box?
Winged Cat 18th Jul 2015, 12:20 PM edit delete reply
> fowl

So the assassin was a bird of some sort?

"Who let that robin in?" "That's no robin." "What do you mean? The bird is totally covered"

Zengar 18th Jul 2015, 8:39 PM edit delete reply
I'd say that it's a case of trying to find a middle road. A 15 wasn't high enough to get out of the way, but was high enough to keep her upright. And then a second 15 didn't get her out of the spin, but did let her guide it, somewhat. Plus, cartoon physics.

It's not so much Dash being penalized by the GM for AJ's roll as mediocre rolls in a PvP contest resulting in mixed results.
