Gotta love it when a character goes against their worse nature and it makes a nice roleplaying moment.

It's about a week off from both being too late to submit guest comics... and my birthday. As usual for the past three years, I've got nothing planned. Though it's serendipitous that I get a guest comic break starting on that day. An unintended gift to myself?

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

I've given up fame to other players before. ...'course this was Shadowrun and those players who got the fame were the ones the cops found first after that job we took to knock down a factory. >:D

Casting crew time.
Basically, who would play the more important rolls of the movie.
You must include your most recent character, and one of the main 6, and a two parter villain.
Movie is The Lion King.
The three hyenas
Best cast gets a prize.

Pinkie Pie in all roles.

And also the genie fro. Aladdin... In the Lion King movie.
Winged Cat 9th Aug 2016, 7:31 PM edit delete reply
My most recent character is a shapeshifter. Discord is a shapeshifter. And I guess Pinkie Pie could disguise herself as, so as to play, all of the roles too?
Klimpaloon 10th Aug 2016, 4:46 PM edit delete reply
Zazu--Twilight Sparkle
Rafiki--The Great and Powerful Trixie
The three hyenas--Doctor Whooves, Derpy, and Minuette

Mufasa- Star Swirl
Scar- Sombra
Zazu- Stable the flutter pony
Simba- Shining Armor
Nala- Cadence
Timon- Spike
Pumbaa- Donut Joe
Rafiki- Zecora
Hyenas- Trixie, Starlight, Sunset.

This is Rainbow's way of forcing the campaign to focus on her. If she doesn't get a ticket this session, then she needs to have another session to get it. By giving the plot coupon with no real value (since obviously everyone will get one) away, she gets more sessions focusing on whatever she wants. It's a brilliant strategy.

That's actually a really interesting way of looking at it. It is brilliant.

Have to admit, I didn't think of that either. I could see that though.
Draxynnic 9th Aug 2016, 8:38 AM edit delete reply
Beat me to it - I was pretty much thinking exactly the same thing. If that smirk in the final panel is reflective of what RD's player is actually feeling, it could well be "Booyah, forced the GM to focus on me again!"

She comes across as generous for giving away the accolades, but what she's actually doing is hogging the spotlight.

Still leaves one wondering how she can be Chaotic Evil within the game.
Anvildude 9th Aug 2016, 12:43 PM edit delete reply
I think it's because in this version, 'Chaotic Evil' is less 'maim burn kill' and more 'I'm not a nice person'. They tried to linearize the alignment chart at one point, so it was just a sliding scale of evil vs good, as opposed to a full chart.

But yes, I think that alignment is going to be changing eventually.

If she keeps this up, she'll end up just being GIVEN it like Rarity's player was.

Hey, guys. Remember that offical PnP Pony RPG Hasbro commissioned that I mentioned a couple months ago? Well they just released the offical cover art for the book.

...Well, huh.

...Well... HUH.

That's... that's a serious time delay...

Spud, how many unofficial Pony systems are there again?
Newbiespud 9th Aug 2016, 10:08 PM edit delete reply
Between pure homebrews, conversions, and modules for existing systems... When I checked last year, roughly a bajillion.

That itself is really not the problem for Tails of Equestria. There being a glut of unprofessional RPGs means there's an opportunity for a company with more money and manpower and experience behind it to offer up The Good Stuff(tm). In theory, anyway - being made by a company is no guarantee of quality, either. But because they're wading into the shallows rather than a deep end with strong contenders, they actually have less competition than you might think. The most direct comparisons I think ToE will probably get are to Ponyfinder, which has a huge head-start and plenty of steam left in terms of setting the standard for traditional pony RPG content.

The other, much bigger problem is that the niche has already been served by those other RPGs by now. Groups will either have moved on from pony campaigns or be comfortable with the system they've already been using. Reaching their audience and getting it to stick long enough to make an impression will probably be their biggest challenge.

All that said, I'm hopeful for Tails of Equestria. It looks different and interesting, and the world really loses nothing by having more options for roleplaying games. I'll probably be first in line to try it out.

Oh wow, my Shadowrun conversion was mentioned. ^^; I feel honored.

Though, I did rebuild the document from scratch. It looks a bit nicer now.

There's also a D&D 5e version for ponies.

(feel free to not update any lists. I just felt proud of my work there and wanted to share)

It seems like this session is one that really engaged Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash (particularly Fluttershy) in a way they hadn't been engaged with the campaign before.

Have you ever had a session like that, one that took a campaign from good and made it feel great for you?
ADemonicPresence 9th Aug 2016, 3:12 PM edit delete reply
y'know, i Really hated this moment in the show. fluttershy contributed almost nothing and i honestly think it would have made a better episode if they had failed.
because there are times when your best just isn't good enough, and times when your intentions amount to little more than a wet tissue.

that said, tying it together with the breezies makes this work much better than i though it would.
nicely done, Spud.

They did fail in the show. Dash was trying for a new record, but only barely made enough wingpower to get the water up to the clouds, and needed two tries to get there. Fluttershy had to overcome her insecurities under pressure, an experience Dash is intimately familiar with. Dash knows how hard it was for her, a daredevil with a lacking sense of self-preservation, to do, so she knew that it was way harder for Fluttershy, whose picture is in the dictionary next to the word "fraidy-cat." The point of the lesson is that it didn't matter how much she contributed, but that she stepped forth and gave what she could. Your lesson, while something children need to learn eventually, is not really something to be addressed in a children's show, and would probably be a massive step backwards in character development for Fluttershy at that point in time. She already knew it, is what I'm saying. It's why she was so scared to step forward, because she knows that sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it won't make a difference. Having it confirmed like that might make her pull a Homer Simpson, stepping away from that with the lesson, "Never try."

I really like the moments when people go against their character's nature for a good moment. I remember this one time in Iron Kingdoms my character found out that the kingdom he'd dedicated most of his life to in the military was going to come under attack as a traitor to the throne from decades prior came back to try again. He hires a messenger to get word to one of his friends still in the military in that country, and rolls well enough on a perception check to realize right before he goes back to his own thing that the messenger is in the traitor's pocket.

Now my character has always been the clean cut, upstanding military man who takes pride in what he does and does it honestly. He's basically the team dad, despite technically taking orders from the other party members who outrank him. So imagine the rest of the party's shock when when I don't try to reason with the messenger who's going to sell me out, I pull a big scary looking gun and say "you're coming with me, we're taking back roads with fewer people watching, and I WILL shoot you if you open your mouth to say a damn thing."

You can threaten Lt. Francis Kiffley and get away with it. You can not threaten him, his friends, and his homeland all in one go and expect to have a good day.

um its a week old so i'm pretty sure its not considered a spoiler at this point so how does nobody at the convention notice that RD was a character in one of the daring do books after the S4 episode?
EEK 10th Aug 2016, 10:46 AM edit delete reply
True, but I still find it odd how it never got brought up considering the setting, plus if anything I'd say RD is probably the most well known of the main 6 considering her status as a wonderbolt (with rarity and twilight being the only other possibilities) plus considering how large Tirek and The changelings effected equestria I've always found them not being very well known suspect. Plus I doubt rainbow colors are common

I've heard of famous actors going to conventions and get mistaken for someone in a good cosplay.
Ace Jackson 10th Aug 2016, 7:43 AM edit delete reply
Ace Jackson
True, however, RD has been involved with efforts to save equestria, several times, the DD fans could well pass it off as a celebrity getting featured in a book as a tip of hat from the author and nothing more. Or they could simply not know and just assume cosplay as has been suggested. Alternatively, RD could have been given a false identity in almost all printings, save the copy DD sent direct to RD.

It really comes down to how well known you think the characters are in universe, and whether you think RD was credited as herself in the book in universe.
