Have I really gone five years without using Rarity's "It is on"? I'm gonna be a little embarrassed if I have and I don't remember, but either way, it seems like the opportunity should have come up way more often...

So here's an odd Story Time for ya: You know how there tend to be common player archetypes - the Real Men, the Roleplayers, the Loonies, and the Munchkins - or at least players who have carved out a role for themselves in the group? Tell a story about that character branching into a different archetype or role. The Loonie getting serious, the Real Man roleplaying for a change, the Munchkin... being less of a Munchkin. Something like that. A player defying their typecasting, essentially.

I always felt "It. Is. On!" was a bit overused myself... but it certainly has its place.

I think one of my most fun, and disastrous, attempts at breaking my own molds, was when I stopped making heavy striker rogues/assassins, and tried playing an honest to goodness Knight, complete with a massive family pedigree, and traditions.

The big problem with me doing this, is that I get into every single character I make...a lot. So, when I made this arogant, argumentative, and LG aligned character, I played it to the letter. She was strict, inflexible, and somewhat of a bully when it came to doing the right thing. I was always told, that I WAS playing up the flaws properly, and that there was no fault on ME for getting so into the character, but Celes was banned from ever being played again. They couldn't tolerate her any further... ;p

A couple decades back, I was part of a college Role-Playing group. One of the injokes was about me and another player in that I was always playing tanks (Real Man) and he played spellcasters (Real Roleplayer). We made a good team and I guess it got us typecast for a bit.

Then one time we switched it up without warning anyone-- I played a charismatic high-energy wizard and he played the dashing, macho swordsman. And somehow, we were More Effective playing against type. We even took on a dragon meant for the entire party plus one NPC and managed to get it bloodied before the rest of the team got there. It was such an experience that we never went back to our old ways.

These days I tend to play healer/buff spellcasters, and last I spoke with my friend, he enjoys being the "Magic knight" archtype.

(First Story Time ever! Woo!)

Back when I was still gaming with any amount of frequency, I had a player who would almost always bring a (non-gaming) book to the table and put it down when it was "her turn." So, after too many years we instituted a "no books at the table" rule (should have been a no-brainer but, well...), forcing her to actually roleplay for a change.

The result was a Dwarven Battlerager named Helga Stronginthearm, who didn't know how to battlerage (the player didn't pay much attention to the rules aside from figuring out which dice to roll) until we approached the end of the campaign. This character created much of the game's comic relief as she played up her MC Warlord characteristics more than her Fighter ones, shouting at literally everyone in order to keep them alive. (without actually using her Warlord powers, either XD)
Highlights include that time she fell in a river (in full Scale armor) chasing the Ranger, that other time she tried to make Dwarven Head Cheese out of a bear's brain (and failed), and who can forget the bit where she literally dragged the Wizard away from the ten-foot-high piles of carved stone skulls? Yeesh, so you detect magic on them. You don't have to go that far. (well, actually she did, because of the SAN checks I was making for the wizard behind the screen, but that's beside the point)

There was also that time the party's Blaster (basically, if it can shoot fire from its hands, she'll play it) ended up with Sharp 'n Pointy Expertise. All the Twin Strikes in the world couldn't save her from a full-on mob of minions, though. XD

It's a pity this Story Time didn't come a little later, because I have what looks like a doozy coming in a few months. Maybe I can look into the future and still give some details.

One of the players in my campaign always plays casters, but we've started planning a sequel game where everyone will play as the children of the current characters. He's going to try a cavalier this time, and just from the preliminary stats and feats, it looks like it's going to be a monster on the battlefield. Ironically, his casters always seem to end up in melee and getting hurt, so this could make the whole game much easier for him.

Cavaliers are awesome. A strong combat class, but one that, due to dependence on their steed, has specific weaknesses. The archetype (not Archetype, just general archetype) of them means they're meant to be very Charismatic and social, allowing for great RP chances. They're great working with a party due to the AoE buffs. It's amazing.

Thank you for saying that, because I'm going to be playing a Constable (Cavalier archetype that is built for urban areas and doesn't require a steed) in my group's next campaign, and our GM's min-maxer friends have been filling his head with complaints about it being a 'bad' class.

Well, there's one guy who always played min-max high-damage characters. Fighters and sorcerers, with names like 'Hey You' and 'February'. It wasn't that he couldn't role-play -- although he'd usually role-play a complete jerk. He just loved being all min-maxed and powerful.

Then in the ENDLESS campaign of doom he decided to play an oracle specializing in healing and buffing. He spent the entire years-long campaign complaining about how ineffective his character was (while being absolutely critical to victory in almost every fight, since he was a ridiculously effective healer and buffer).

So in the next campaign, he decided to play... a lawyer. With no combat, social, or sneaky abilities. I'm not really sure what his game is, honestly. He doesn't seem to be enjoying himself. :/

I have been in Rarity's situation, kind of. I tend more toward Roleplayer, but I have made at least two (that I can remember) DPR-optimized PCs.

One of them...well, let's just say he eventually picked up speed that entitled him to pull Sonic's moves, based off his stats that had him attacking eight times per round (with weapons doing d10 damage, in a system where damage was based on d12s, d10s, d8s, or d6s depending on type) by the end of the game. I haven't done the math, but I got the impression he inflicted by far the most HP damage of any PC in that campaign (though status conditions inflicted by other PCs must get credit for their share of the kills). The boss monsters were protected against tricks and traps, but even HP sponges could only do so much against sheer DPR.

The other one...well, you know the white mage archetype: healer, buffer, supporter, gets the weakest weapons? The system had an actual white mage class, designed to that archetype. I took it and made my PC into one of the heaviest damage dealers in the campaign...and one of the tricks involved (minmaxing in favor of maximum magical power) boosted his healing abilities too. And even when just buffing he sometimes arguably broke the system: there was one fight where the GM simply conceded because my PC made the entire party literally invincible to anything the enemies could do, including physical damage. (The effect only lasted so long, took all of my actions, and was only possible because we were a party of 2. But it lasted more than long enough for my ally - who was, by coincidence OOCly though it happened to make sense ICly, of a very good build to take advantage of temporary invincibility - to do enough damage.)

Let there be no mistake: both of them had deep stories, grew and changed over the course of the campaign, and helped introduce a few of the plot elements. They just happened to stomp through the combat fast so as to get back to the roleplaying.

Imagine a bug report with the title "It does not work". No mention what doesn't work and no further details on the error. Compare this with your comment. Now you know why no one gave you a helpful answer.

I traditionally have played high-charisma spell casting/support characters. I'm usually the party's face, or at least I've usually been it's nice face.

Recently, I rolled a paladin and just went in for the opposite of everything I usually am--chose Tieflings because they are disliked/feared in the setting, frontline halbard swinger, zero guile beyond the tactical. And it's been awesome. Sometimes it's fun to play against type.

My brother, friend, and I have all played martial fighters, diplomats, and healers before.

Never arcane. All three of us (in a five person party) decided to be wizards. It was a lot like Magicka, except we somehow made it work.

Thing for me is, i've never really played enough to develop an archetype, always playing something different. I do have a five person campaign that will soon be starting it's second session soon, and there may be something coming up soon

The group I regularly GM for has one player who sort-of-kinda does this once every single campaign. Every new campaign he builds his character last, filling whatever gap the party is weak at. Then he maxes out some obscure and unusual skill or ability, and adds one or two really obvious personality quirks. For most of the campaign, when things are happening, and the party is moving through the plot, his character is just kind of there. They contribute skill rolls, damage etc, but never make any decisions or draw attention. Whenever things are quiet, the loony comes out, and hams up the exagerated character traits. Then sooner or later in every campaign, things go wrong for the party. His character manages to avoid the worst of it, mostly due to him not drawing attention at the time. For the rest of that session, he is a completely focussed roleplayer, never dropping character, and manages an incredible amount of badass heroism to save the rest of the party. crisis over, he fades back into background/jokester for the rest of the campaign.
