Over the course of the last five and a half years, I've stretched some of these episodes to the breaking point trying to remix them together into one timeline, haven't I?

This reminds me of ProJared's story "The Most Elaborate Trap" of every step taken to take out the boss without a fight, setting up anything and everything on hand to beat the ever-living snot out of him... only to forget the most important factor of a trap and ended up having to fight the boss in the end after all.

(The most important thing being that the bad guy is the one who triggers it.)

Mostly because they specified that they were going to launch everything at "the first person who comes through that door." Shame that the first person that came through their door was their guide and person who they got to introduce them to the boss-guy. Honestly, I saw the fault in their plan way ahead before PJ gave away the twist.

Usually you're allowed to at least cancel the action if it would have the wrong target.
Like, if you ready an action to shoot the first guy who goes through a door, you can usually at least opt to not shoot anyone at all and just act as normal on your old initiative.
That would still mean losing the benefit of the trap, though.

Every frickin' week. I quickly learned that my players were highly resistant to anything even resembling a linear plot, so I just decided I was never going to plan more than maybe five minutes ahead ever. Making stuff up as I went along proved quite successful, it turned out!

I lived for playing out huge, complex story arcs like that! I would have loved throwing that kind of mystery at my old group. :D

The trick is to just keep yourself organized. Have a frame work written out of the locations and NPCs involved, make at least three ways per scene for the PCs to find the next clue, and keep motivations clear to prevent too many red herrings that can cause a the PCs to get way off track.

If you're not pulling it out of your ass on a regular basis, either you have Xanatos-level planning skills, or you *and* your players need to step up your game.

I live for those times when my players don't take a third, or fourth, or fifth option, but something out of the Aleph-2 theoretical numbers.

Since the gambling didn't exist until the players brought it up, they didn't HAVE to give themselves this much work.
The GM could have just had the bets involve a few lower-ranking Guild members (anyone higher up would stick to the plan, which clearly didn't involve betting; If it did, the GM would know about it)
That honors the original intent of finding some gambling that the thief-guild's involved in, and lets the GM basically hand them the same kind of leads as if they'd investigated the way he expected (except instead of finding them backstage sabotaging, or whatever, they find them through this unexpected angle)
That's about two scenes extra (one social where betting happens and it's revealed who is betting on what, then another chase/intimidation/fight scene (depending on method used) to get ahold of the thieves) - then from there you're back on track.
Everything after the first ten minutes or so of this was the GM either going above-and-beyond to make it interesting, OR getting caught in their own web of improvisation.

I ran a Naruto d20 supplement for a time and anybody who has seen naruto knows that its super heroes pretending to be ninjas. However, the supplement we had was so poorly made that my final boss fell to an overpowered use of lv 1 spells that didnt cap their stats.

To combat the overpowered-ness, or possibly enhance it, we turned the "chakra control" skill into "ninja BS." Therefore, if any player had an idea but didnt have the direct skill, they would roll BS and spend some chakra to make it seem "fair." This made every other hour of play improve. And then it got worse:

Once, "Mia" used this to link mind control effects and took over the entire government for a full minute, just long enough to sign paperwork that allowed the party to not only do the quest, but be paid the entire towns money up front. When the spell wore off, the LN people were forced to pay up. It is impossible to balance a Goku with Batman powers.

Pretty much the entire start of the first campaign I ever tried to run as DM was made up off of the top of my head. It included a wizard's tower inabited by a bunch of low-level wizard NPCs and one powerful one who liked to do...'experiments'. The reason that word is in quotes? Most of them were done for no reason than to see if they could. because one of my PCs had elected to give their character a phobia of fluffy white rabbits...I decided to have a little fun. So I had the wizards create, and lose track of, a large number of white rabbits they were experimenting on....only the experiment in question involved binding demons inside the fluffy little animals. So the rabbit-phobic PC, who was also set up so that he could eventually become a non-evil necromancer (that took some rule-bending on my part), ended up being confronted by a hoard of demon-possessed fluffy white rabbits.... I remember almost dying of laughter from his character's reaction as they chased him through the halls. Definitely one of the high points of that campaign.

I've gotten to where I just plan general stuff these days, so I can better run with what happens in a game. I don't necessarily plan too far in advance either.

I once ran a pretty fun one shot rp on a day where it looked like drama and people not being present was going to sink the regularly scheduled campaign, which was complete, 100% reaction from me.

Basically, I had my character invite all the other characters to a virtual amusement park. One person went on the water rides and challenged Wattson to a battleship duel, another went on the roller coaster, another didn't have enough money to pay the entrance fee and had to fight a meowth in the amusement park arena to pay for his ticket. Another character went to the 'restricted zone' and fought a bunch of increasingly difficult challenges.

My favorite part was when another character tried to sneak in, so I teleported her to a cheaters zone, where she had to reach a beacon, but was under attack from a tiger. I think she rode the tiger to the beacon to successfully sneak in to the park.

Whenever I do this amusement park I'm constantly reacting, and I barely ever plan ahead. I did this again on a halloween session and had a fun plotline involving ghosts taking over the park, attacking them while they were on their rides.

In my hometown group, I just started assuming they would go on tangents. So I focused on world building/occasional dungeon building, and let the plot come into being from them. Also it did not help that they were all Loonies.

When I did want them to follow any plot point, it became hard. I invented the God of Plot Convenience, Duse Machi, who literally made maps and things appear in front of them when I was too fed up. But that was rare- it just became my style of gming to think on the go and have very little plot that requires railroading...

Amusingly, I'm pretty sure the canon name of the place is Los Pegasus, after Los Angeles. But this is barely brought up in official materials so most people hear the name and think Las Vegas.
