And that's The Sonic Rainboom! And the 900 page milestone!

This was the episode I'd been worrying about from the beginning, 899 pages ago. Once it was clear this comic was going to get off the ground, there were a number of "staple" episodes that I knew I would have to cover someday. The Sonic Rainboom was at the top of that list. I had to do this episode at least some kind of justice. I hope I did as much as a D&D-based screencap webcomic can.

I've probably imagined this reinterpretation of events about ten different ways, and people in the comments have imagined five more. But the funny thing about writing: Even if you have a story event that's essential to your vision and can never be removed, a lot can change around it on your way there. Whatever my first idea for this episode was, it certainly wasn't "Rarity intentionally risks her life to give Rainbow Dash a chance to shine but the DM is skeptical about the physics so it all comes down to a natural 20 but not a single natural 20 but not an astronomically lucky four in a row either."

Anyway, some guest comics will follow, primarily a long and unusual arc from DragonTrainer, the One Piece Grand Line 3.5 author. And after that... The Best Night Ever!

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

This is going to get better and better.

Yeah. NS thinks it's gotten off the ground so far, but just wait until after the next arc... ;)

Definitively looking forward to 'the best night ever' being handled by these players.

Probably more like "the best train wreak ever". :D
offroader 27th Apr 2017, 10:41 PM edit delete reply
Jkay. Let's see considering how the night ended in original. I'm expecting a big reveal(of some kind atleast) and the whole trainwrecking be acording to GM's plan

What, you mean Tuesday? That sounds like Tuesday.

With what strip did this start? Have we spent more than half the journey on this mega-arc?

Sweet and Elite started at 435, so I think we have. Or does it go farther back through the Diamond Dogs?

Wow! Spud, you're building quite a continuity of plot here, and interestingly, it's built around Rarity rather than Twilight.

First things first, congrats on getting to Strip 900! Woot!

"But the funny thing about writing: Even if you have a story event that's essential to your vision and can never be removed, a lot can change around it on your way there."

I definitely know what you mean there. I've been writing my little FoE fanfic for almost two years now (and it is three chapters away from being done THANK LUNA!!!) and, while I had certain events that had to happen in order for everything to make sense, the path leading up to those events have changed so many times that I'm still sometimes surprised with what I have written so far. So many things that I thought I would be using and taking advantage of fell to the wayside while others ideas cropped up that were way better than what I had originally envisioned.

I think that's half the fun of doing creatives works like writing and webcomics: watching the story come to life as you're working on it and seeing it unfold in ways that (sometimes) leaves you pleasantly surprised. That and seeing your characters take a life of their own at times.

On an unrelated note, I find it ironic that I just finished "The Best Night Ever" fanfic right before coming here. Now I get to relive that night again from Spud's perspective. Should be fun. =P

Dat shipping in the last frame though, Zap apples indeed.

Great, now I'm imagining the DM as Starlight Glimmer.

You're not the only one.
Cyborg7221 27th Apr 2017, 9:23 AM edit delete reply
You mean Sunset Glimmer? I don't know any Starlight Glimmer.
Anvildude 27th Apr 2017, 11:46 AM edit delete reply
Do you mean Sunset Shimmer? 'cause she's the one with Bacon Hair and fingers.
Evilbob 27th Apr 2017, 12:17 PM edit delete reply
Twilight Sparkle...
Sunset Shimmer...
Starlight Glimmer...

What you DON'T know, is that they're actually all the SAME entity! An evil, inconceivably-powerful, eldritch entity! One that required its soul to be split in three and sealed!

Digo Dragon
Did you just invent unicorn horcruxes?
offroader 27th Apr 2017, 10:46 PM edit delete reply
Ooookay then Twilight is 1/2 soul and Starlight and Sunset is 1/4. Did I get it right?
offroader 27th Apr 2017, 10:44 PM edit delete reply
A) you forgot The Great And Powerful Trixie (Lulamoon)
B) Naaa-h. Pinkie is. Twilight don't think so.
C) I still think that GM is Lauren Faust

Cyborg7221: Starlight Glimmer is a pony from recent seasons.

Is there a strange line under Fluttershy's eye in the next to last panel, or is it just me?
Winged Cat 27th Apr 2017, 1:15 PM edit delete reply
Winged Cat
Which eye? Which line?

If you mean the black lines, those are eyelashes. If you mean the slightly-darker-yellow dot in her face, that's a nostril.
Jennifer 27th Apr 2017, 6:00 PM edit delete reply
No, it was a straight line from her eye to her nose. I thought it was some sort of "burned-in" line on the computer I was using; it stayed where it was as I scrolled up and down. A few of the PCs at work have bright, streaky lines (especially thru text) when you view them under certain settings or angles, and it was probably just that.

Once again I seem to have missed my chance for guest comics... but I'm drawing a blank on what to do, so maybe that's all right.

My problem is that for the last two missed chances I did have good ideas. Just no time to implement them. :(

Currently working on a big idea with WingedCat, but again, takes a long time due to a lack of... well, time.

I was going to say they forgot Spikes ticket then I remembered that he has nothing to do at this gala and just sits in the pub drinking... I mean sits at the donut shop eating donuts. Like there are only two scenes I can think off that would make good screenshots that have Spike in them. One just before they all split up to do their own thing and one in the donut bar at the end of the episode.
Storm Vision 28th Apr 2017, 11:59 AM edit delete reply
Why would they need to have a ticket for a class feature? Would Pinkie get a ticket for her Bardic Training?

... okay, bad example, she might.
Zeeth 28th Apr 2017, 6:06 PM edit delete reply
Actually, Spike may or may not have had a lot of local Canterlot friends to go visit. Even if he doesn't have a ticket for himself, he has things he can do... and an Outside Man is usually a must when you're pulling a big heist or raiding a stronghold, right? Maybe Spike goes scouting the area.
Dusk Raven 30th Apr 2017, 10:08 PM edit delete reply
Did Spike show up in the other episode where they went to the Gala? I can't remember the name but it was the one with Discord, Tree Hugger, and the Smooze.

I hope we'll get to see Starlight Glimmer in your comic some more. <3
