Newbiespud's Note: If you read the Night Phase page, try not to spoil it in the comments. If you have not, I'd just like to assure you that while there's a handful more of them, they won't take up more than one update at a time.

This arc's going to end up a mix of double- and single-length pages, mostly double. They were submitted as single pages, but there were so many that I've done some consolidation. Otherwise this guest arc would take another three weeks of regular updates, or I'd have to take the opposite approach and do daily updates and burn it all out in a solid month. So this is my middle-of-the-road approach.

Don't underestimate rusty old items! They're usually lucky! That or a good way of infecting an enemy with tetanus. Least I think that's how it works.

I see that as a Win-Win.

Speaking of rust, I was taking part in a d20 modern adventure and the subject of a possible fight with a rust monster came up, despite us having no evidice a rust monster was involved in the session. The solution we came up with to battle this imaginary beast? We were going to spray it with cans of WD-40 and then ignite the oil with a lighter. Makeshift flamethrowers! The GM said we had trust issues with him.

Pfft. Just beat it to death with rubber coated sledgehammers. Even if you lose the head, you still have a perfectly functional club to finish the job with.

Or just drop a piano on it. Pianos are everywhere in the modern world

I've never played where we knew who was saved or who each other were. Maybe that's why the game seemed so inscrutable.

Not necessarily. It depends on the variant being played - if the mafia have roles in addition to their faction kill, then it is entirely possible for the mafia to target one of their own and protect them on the same night, just to gain trust. And Night 1 is the best time to do that, before the information tables start getting turned. (Admittedly, this comes from my experience playing these games online - things could be different in a face-to-face game.)

The roles were given in the first strip. No variant roles: there are just Mafia, Detectives, Civilians, and one Nurse. So revealing that Applejack was saved is a variant: Applejack is both proven non-Mafia and the Mafia know the Nurse is someone who would save her randomly.

Hold the phone, you reveal who has been targeted, but saved? That... seems kind of odd. It's a bit too much information, I think.
We always play with the rule that you reveal the role after death. After all, the town otherwise gets basically no certain information. But both combined seems a bit much.

I've never heard of this game before this arc. Are there any interesting entanglements that happen when the detectives and mafia end up targeting the same person in the night?

The detective finds out what alignment the dead person was. Which everyone else also finds out.

Okay. So what happens if the nurse and detective choose the same person, who is mafia? Does the nurse protect the mafia FROM the detective, or is the agent still eliminated, as s/he is guilty of committing a crime?

Just so I'm clear on the rules, what happened during the night phase was that Luna and Applejack were targeted by the Mafia for elimination, but the Nurse saved Applejack? Do we know whether Applejack is a Detective or not, because it kinda sounds like she is from that narration.

Is this really the way the game is usually played, targeting two kills during the opening night phase? In every game I've ever played the GM was the person "murdered" the first night so everyone got to play for at least one day phase.

I have fond memories of hosting several games of Mafia on a now-defunct forum. Those got complicated real fast, but they were tons of fun.

What we know from the light side strips.

Luke (the friendly munchkin) is playing Dr Whoves
Corey (the angry munchkin) is playing Big Mac
Phil (the non gamer newb) is some pegasus i think was named Soarin
Rika (the purposely airheaded one) is derpy
Nat (the social butterfly) is Trixie
Gordon (the introvert turned munchkin GM) is Shining armor
and DM (the older female former GM of death who'se games required munchkining to survive) was luna

We know Fluttershy, Rainbowdash, Phil and DM were unhappy with their role asignments.

We know the first two targets were Applejack and DM both of which are probably the best judges of intention and psychology at the table.

We know the Nurse picked Applejack to save with no prior information.

Now i can make some deductions based solely on this information but as i have read the Night phase comic I might accidently let that cloud the conclusions that flow from these facts.
