Goodbye Applejack, at least you was safe for one day.
Also, Rainbow picked the one pony that never needed saving.
Good job on the misdirection Rarity.

But can the mafia fight their way out of a wet paper bag wizard?

I bet if AJ hadn't accused RD, she would have saved her again.

Surprised Twilight wasn't targetted considering her comment on eye dilation...
Rastaba 11th May 2017, 7:18 AM edit delete reply
To be fair she doesn't know who's Mafia, or who's actually in danger in the first place, meaning RD basically has just take random shots at the entire roster of players without knowing if they're really in danger.
Luna 11th May 2017, 7:44 AM edit delete reply
Frankly, who would actually believe something like "I'm trying to check on eye dilation to decide who's mafia and who isn't". Especially since eyes not being dilated should actually point out to someone who had their eyes opened and not closed for a fair amount of time, so by her logic, it should have tagged RD as potential mafia (or cop or nurse).

They could have decided to eliminate her, but doing so based on her "dilated eye" comment would be plain silly. Might actually be best to leave her in the game longer if she's intent to try to use such "tell" as there's a good chance she might get convinced that somepony is mafia wrongfully, convince the rest to kill a civilian, then get herself tagged as mafia by the surviving players (well, except the cops who checked on her first).
Rastaba 11th May 2017, 11:21 AM edit delete reply
Also might be because some of them buy the idea of her using such a 'tell' and don't wanna risk making it seem suspicious that the very turn after she suggests such she gets offed. Which might make the others suspicious of such and try to look for such tells.

Mind you, I don't belive such would actually be bad for them as it would stoke paranoia in the entire group prompting them to question if anything anybody says or does is a lie or a tell. Might not be good for them but basically keeps things alarmed and on edge.

That's the point: at the beginning of the day only Nurse's eyes weren't closed long enough to dilate. And that's what probably Twilight meant.
Douglas 11th May 2017, 9:12 AM edit delete reply
...And the Mafia has almost guaranteed their victory. In order for the Mafia to lose, every single remaining lynch has to correctly pick a Mafia member AND the Nurse has to successfully save someone every single night. If a tie in the lynch vote always gets resolved in favor of lynching a mafia member, then Rainbow Dash can afford to miss ONE save. And that's it.

This is because of the Mafia getting two night kills to the civilians' one lynch per day. Normal rules have the Mafia only killing one target per night, and the game can easily go either way. Giving them two per night tilts the odds overwhelmingly in their favor.

Winged Cat
I wonder if that was deliberate, to keep the number of comics down - or if they're being set up for a come-from-behind win.

And I wonder if the Mafia automatically wins once their victory is assured even given perfect play.
Freelance 11th May 2017, 10:32 AM edit delete reply
I get the feeling that once they *ahem* thinned the herd a bit, the mafia will only be able to take only one pony down per turn, whether it be fewer targets or fewer mafia members.
Draxynnic 12th May 2017, 12:59 AM edit delete reply
Yeah, one logical variant could be that once one or two Mafia get lynched, their ability to kill drops due to having less pony-power available to pull off successful hits. Or you could just reason that as more people are getting killed, the remainder are put on their guard and are harder to knock off.

Eye dilation can be used to determine someone who has had their eyes open as opposed to closed but not in the way Twilight seems to think, Everyone will have dilated Eyes EXCEPT the people who were in the phase immediately previous, in this case it can be used to detect the nurse and only the nurse.
tolich 12th May 2017, 11:25 PM edit delete reply
The nurse isn't Mafia, right? =)
Ransom 11th May 2017, 4:40 PM edit delete reply
Ah, so the cops know RD is not Mafia. That actually is pretty helpful.

I really like how you've put these night phase updates together. I mean, the way the screencaps are used to convey the action is really well done.

I don't have much experience with mafia, but the host doesn't seem to be doing a very good job in this game. It seems like they keep heavily hinting that the players are doing something wrong with the tone of their voice. Is this standard practice in a mafia game, or am I just not reading something right?
WordSarien 12th May 2017, 12:21 PM edit delete reply
I think the idea is that the host is trying to make sure they have the right one. I imagine the host pointing directly at Rainbow Dash's player and emphasizing, "You want to investigate... that one?" But yeah, it certainly does read that way without any other context clues.

I never played mafia, or any of the other games people have mentioned in this series of comics.
But I have played Pinkamena, which has a town of ponies, each of them with a special role you need to direct. Four of the ponies are Changlings
Drone : who kills ponies
forger : who frames ponies with fake evidence
and the consort: who seduces a pony preventing them from doing jobs
There is also another killer Pinkamena who randomly kills from the town, and can target anyone, save for the queen.
Pinkamena is also the only one the changlings cant kill as well.
SkyStream 12th May 2017, 6:11 PM edit delete reply
That's literally Mafia but in a pony variant.
Belmontzar 15th May 2017, 10:46 AM edit delete reply
it is?
Pinkamena has the following jobs
Jailor - tosses a pony in jail for a day, if the jailed subject is attacke the jailer keeps them safe and tells you [but wont reveal the attacker]
Spellcaster who can put a kill hex on anyone [but kills herself if she kills an innocent and a few are immune]
Reporter and gumshoe can investigate people to see if they are changlings or pinkamena
Nurse is obviouse
bodyguard defends a selected pony and kills any one who attacks her charge, but dies after words
Watchpony watches over someone's house telling you if someone appears or visits them
Party pony works like the jailer and preveents a select pony from doing their task, unless its pinkamena who kills the party pony immediatly
Veteran has a limited three time use but shoots and usually kills anyone who gets close to them
You select three ponies to do tasks and use what they find to oust the fakes and kill pinkamena.
Each day cycle you read evidence and reports, and can execute a pony.
Ofcourse you dont know who is who, so part of your job is figuring that out too.
there are also two civilians the drunk and then, another one I cant remmeber right now sorry.

Eh, I'd say it's more single-player Mafia than pony Mafia.
