Honestly, if recoloring word balloons weren't a pain in the butt, I would have done these IDW rewrite-arcs a bit more often. They're an intensely fun exercise.

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

A fun pain in the butt.
Never thought I would hear that.

Guess you don't have a spanking fetish.

Happy USA Independence Day.
1. Fireworks
2. Cookout
3. Regular day
4. Other special plans

Which of these best describes today for you.

Me Cookout with the family.

Not in the USA, so... Regular Day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Same here, really.

More on the actual comic though, I'd assert that vogue would be quite the opposite of what hipsters are into... right?

That was my thought as well.

Something between cookout and regular day. I'm allergic to the smell of fireworks. No idea why, but I think it's the sulfur. The 4th generally sucks for me.

Before or after they go boom?

Despite living in the USA, it was so much a regular day for me. Well, I didn't have to go into the office, but I still had to work my other job (being the dad, cooking, cleaning, spending some time with my daughter).

The background pony as Shaggy is a nice touch. XD

The comics are notorious for throwing little background gems like that. :D

"Big McIntosh and the Art of the Gazebo" was loaded with background references. A couple foreground ones too.

How are you going about re-coloring the balloons? I thought it'd be a simple matter of using a similar-color wand select tool?

"Fear not, loyal employees. Ra- Dainty Dove has a plan."

I thought this was being played out over a text exchange. How does one accidentally type out a slip of the tongue?

Dramatic effect?

Could just be Rarity's player hamming it up. She seems the type.
Wyvern 4th Jul 2017, 7:46 PM edit delete reply
That's one of several reasons I love the episode Simple Ways. Rarity (and Tabitha St. Germaine) leaves no scenery unchewed!

...This is kinda unethical, using *whole pages* of a published comic and just altering the dialog printed on the page. This is plagiarism. The main comic (and Darths and Droids, DM of the Rings, et. all) at least are real parodies using stills and screen grabs formed into new panels.

I won't be reading this until the guest "strips" are over.

I like how you logged out before posting such an insulting comment. It really shows how confident you are about what you are saying.

P.S. These are not guest strips.

Contrast to me, who literally made an account with the site just to make a full-page rant on an arc he didn't like.

Look, take it however you want, but seriously. It's one thing to cobble screenshots from the cartoon and build a comic page out of them. I never said there was anything wrong with that, and for the intents and purposes of a parody that's totally fine and enjoyable. The writer is making something new.

But all the writer is doing *here* is taking a whole comic page that someone else entirely drew/inked/colored, and then re-lettering it to suit their needs. All they're doing is changing word bubbles. I'm sorry but that's far more dirty pool. Maybe this still counts as a parody but it's far closer to stealing someone else's work rather than build something from an extant piece and I certainly find it a little unethical.
aerion111 5th Jul 2017, 3:39 PM edit delete reply
There's a mostly-unique storyline (I actually haven't read this particular comic - surprisingly, since this doesn't seem like one I'd skip, but maybe I skipped/haven't gotten to the entire 'line' - so I don't actually KNOW that the original story is similar. But I'm making an educated guess that it is, since the art itself kinda implies it)
It's sufficient for Fair Use - though by a smaller margin than the usual based-on-the-show format, I'll grant you.
BR549 5th Jul 2017, 8:55 PM edit delete reply
It is still parody, and parody is a protected use.
